Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is a huge continent with multicultural nations, where translation and interpretation are everyday occurrences. Translation studies has flourished in Africa in the last decade, with countries often having several official languages. The primary objective of this volume is to bring together research articles on translation and interpreting studies in Africa, written mainly, but not exclusively, by researchers living and working in the region. The focus is on the translation of literature and the media, and on the uses of interpreting. It provides a clear idea of the state and direction of research, and highlights research that is not commonly disseminated in North Africa and Europe. This book is an essential text for students and researchers working in translation studies, African studies and in African linguistics.

Book excerpt: The great medieval necropolis of Cairo, comprising two main areas that together stretch twelve kilometers from north to south, constitutes a major feature of the city's urban landscape. With monumental and smaller-scale mausolea dating from all eras since early medieval times, and boasting some of the finest examples of Mamluk architecture not just in the city but in the region, the necropolis is an unparalleled--and until now largely undocumented--architectural treasure trove. In Architecture for the Dead, architect Galila El Kadi and photographer Alain Bonnamy have produced a comprehensive and visually stunning survey of all areas of the necropolis. Through detailed and painstaking research and remarkable photography, in text, maps, plans, and pictures, they describe and illustrate the astonishing variety of architectural styles in the necropolis: from Mamluk to neo-Mamluk via baroque and neo-pharaonic, from the grandest stone buildings with their decorative domes and minarets to the humblest--but elaborately decorated--wooden structures. The book also documents the modern settlement of the necropolis by families creating a space for the living in and among the tombs and architecture for the dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After tracing (on pp. 13-85) the complex history of Christian-Jewish relations throughout the ages, marked with numerous manifestations of anti-Judaism and antisemitism, focuses on the pontificate of three Popes: Pius XI, Pius XII, and John XXIII. Their papacies coincided with the rise of fascism and Nazism, the Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Notes that Pius XI not only condemned racial antisemitism in Germany and elsewhere, but was the first Pope to actively take a stand in defense of the Jews. Pius XII, who did not possess the assertive qualities of his predecessor, but was a good diplomat, deplored Nazi and fascist antisemitism, but kept silent on the Holocaust throughout the war years. Nevertheless, during the Holocaust, he rendered help to thousands of Jews in Italy and elsewhere. Stresses the fact that both Popes acted at a time when many Catholic priests and hierarchs in Germany and other countries supported Nazism and racism. Although Pius XII, and the entire Catholic Church, did not approve of the Zionist program to revive the Jewish state in Palestine, he spoke up for the preservation of Jewish holy places in Israel on a par with Christian holy places. John XXIII, the supporter of reconciliation between Christians and Jews, paved the way for Vatican Council II and the document "Nostra aetate".

Greves argues that these committees have the potential to play a significant role in resolving conflicts and promoting peace, but also acknowledges the challenges they face. Drawing on examples from the League of Nations and other organizations, this book provides a valuable historical perspective on international cooperation. Book excerpt: Starting from the premise that Canadian culture offers "particularly fertile ground for the cultivation of doubleness," this book explores the numerous forms of irony observable in Canadian literature and visual arts. Individual chapters focus on the ironies of ethnicity and race, irony as a strategy for addressing Canada's colonial past, feminists' uses of irony, and a specific case of photography and the amplification of ironies in the work of artistic collectives such as Fastwurns and General Idea. The book concludes with an examination of the political power of irony.
