Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing complexity and sophistication of synchronous orbit satellites has resulted in a corresponding increase in their susceptibility to anomalous behavior and disruption. Many of these problems can be attributed to the buildup of large potentials on various surfaces of the satellites in response to the ambient space plasma. Such large potentials (as great as -20,000 V relative to the ambient plasma) can produce anomalies and disruptions by causing arcing between the surfaces. In this report, the question of the time rate of change of satellite potential is studied. Theory and observations are reviewed to give estimates of the time rate of change in potentials encountered at synchronous orbit. A clear need for future study is indicated. Plans for instrumentation being developed at AFGL to study the area are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid variations in spacecraft potential are observed on entry and exit from the earth's shadow. Generalized equations, based on elementary plasma probe theory, are developed which make quantitative estimates of these potentials as a function of satellite position in the earth's penumbra, and are compared with data from the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geosynchronous satellites. The agreement between the observations and the predictions results from the approximate constancy of the ratio of the ambient ion to electron current during injection events. Due to the significant size and shape differences of the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites, the results are applicable in many space physics situations such as estimating the effects of electron beams on satellite potential and of spacecraft charging on very large space structures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of plasma data from the geosynchronous satellites ATS-5 and ATS-6 shows that the satellites vary rapidly in potential as they pass into and out of the earth's shadow. These variations result from the loss of photoelectrons as the sun is eclipsed. A model of this phenomemon which includes the effects of atmospheric attenuation of the solar flux between 1000 A and 3000 A and spacecraft charge buildup is used to predict the potential variations observed by ATS-5 and ATS-6. The model predicts potentials within + or - 700 V of the observed potentials in the range -100 V to -10,000 V. (Author).

Book excerpt: Leading scientists discuss the most recent physical and experimental results in the physics of Bose-Einstein condensate theory, the theory of nonlinear lattices (including quantum and nonlinear lattices), and nonlinear optics and photonics. Classical and quantum aspects of the dynamics of nonlinear waves are considered. The contributions focus on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and on the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Recent experimental results on atomic condensates and hydrogen bonded systems are reviewed. Particular attention is given to nonlinear matter waves in periodic potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In arid and semi-arid areas, the main contributions to land surface processes are precipitation, surface evaporation and surface energy balancing. In the close-to-surface layer and root-zone layer, vapor flux is the dominant flux controlling these processes - process which, in turn, influence the local climate pattern and the local ecosystem. The work reported in this thesis attempts to understand how the soil airflow affects the vapor transport during evaporation processes, by using a two-phase heat and mass transfer model. The necessity of including the airflow mechanism in land surface process studies is discussed and highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixture is described for making normal-pressure tests of flat plates 5 inches in diameter in which particular care was taken to obtain rigid clamping at the edges. Results are give for 19 plates, ranging in thickness from 0.015 to 0.072 inch. The center deflections and the extreme-fiber stresses at low pressures were found to agree with theoretical values; the center deflections at high pressures were 4 to 12 percent greater than the theoretical values. Empirical curves are derived of the pressure for the beginning of permanent set as a function of the dimensions of the plate and the tensile properties of the material.
