Book excerpt: The term “total petroleum hydrocarbons” (TPHs) is used for any mixture of several hundred hydrocarbons found in crude oil, and they represent the sum of volatile petroleum hydrocarbons and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons. The petrol-range organics include hydrocarbons from C6 to C10, while diesel-range organics are C10-C28 hydrocarbons. Environmental pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons is one of the major global concerns, particularly in oil-yielding countries. In fact, there are more than five million potentially contaminated areas worldwide that represent, in general, a lost economic opportunity and a threat to the health and well-being of humans and the environment. Petroleum-contaminated sites constitute almost one-third of the total sites polluted with chemicals around the globe. The land contamination caused by industrialization was recognized as early as the 1960s, but less than a tenth of potentially contaminated lands have been remediated due to the nature of the contamination, cost, technical impracticability, and insufficient land legislation and enforcement. This book is the first single source that provides comprehensive information on the different aspects of TPHs, such as sources and range of products, methods of analysis, fate and bioavailability, ecological implications including impact on human health, potential approaches for bioremediation such as risk-based remediation, and regulatory assessment procedures for TPH-contaminated sites. As such, it is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, technicians in the oil industry and remediation practitioners, as well as policy makers.

Book excerpt: A demonstration of the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Criteria Working Group (TPHCWG) approach for assessing human health risk at weathered petroleum release sites was performed at a petroleum, oil and lubricant underground storage tank site (JP-4 and JP-4-8) located at the Springfield Air National Guard Base, Springfield, Ohio. A total of nine subsurface soil samples were obtained for this demonstration project at subsurface depths ranging from 4 to 6 feet. Soil analyses included both volatile and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons using the TPHCWG direct method and the Massachusetts Department 0 Environmental Protection (MA DEP) methodology to compare the approaches. Soil core composites were analyzed for trichloroethylene, gasoline-range organics, volatile petroleum hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), diesel-range organics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and extractable petroleum hydrocarbons using both the TPHCWG and MA DEP protocols. No benzene or trichloroethylene was detected and only trace concentrations of toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes were. detected. Results, in combination with the finding of very low concentrations of BTEX, indicated that the hydrocarbons detected in site soils were composed of a weathered petroleum mixture. Overall, the TPHCWG approach provides better insight into the nature of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination (i.e., it provides more robust fractional analysis data) and is less likely to overestimate the risk posed to human receptors under the same exposure scenario.

Book excerpt: This report evaluates the methods of analysis that can be used with the Hanby Test Kits for assessing the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination in environmental matrices. This field screening technique is based on the colorimetric analysis of petroleum products in soil and water matrices, following a solvent extraction and a Friedel-Crafts reaction. The methods include visually comparing the sample to reference photographs, and two spectrophotometric (H.E.L.P. Mate 2010 and 2000) systems designed to establish discrete values. To test these field screening techniques, 90 field and quality assurance (QA) samples were obtained. Both of the spectrophotometric methods experienced instrumental problems, so that fewer than 60% of the samples distributed could be analyzed on-site. Ultimately, the H.E.L.P. Mate 2010 was dropped from the evaluation altogether. Furthermore, because of these complications, no TPH values were reported during the field exercise. The results yielded by the visual and H.E.L.P. Mate 2000 methods were compared for the QA samples; the visual technique was more reliable for showing the presence and estimating the quantity of TPH contamination.

Book excerpt: A demonstration of the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Working Group approach for risk assessment was conducted on two former underground storage tank sites (Sites 380A and 529) at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, CA. Site 380A is impacted by diesel fuel and Site 529 is primarily impacted by heating oil, as well as some lighter fuels. Samples were collected in side-by-side brass sleeves and submitted to different laboratories for fractionation (Direct Method) analysis and conventional total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis, specifically EPA Modified 8015. The results of the conventional method were consistently two to three times higher than the results from the fractionation analysis. In addition, the Direct Method yielded volatile aromatic fractions concentrations that differed from the benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) analyses (EPA Method 8020). The reason for the discrepancies are not clear but may be due to intralaboratory variability. The RBSLs developed for both sites were higher than current state criteria with the exception of the RBSLs for the indoor air pathway. It was found that detection limits, particularly for the lightest aromatic fractions (EC5-8), dramatically affect the RBSLs pathways requiring partitioning. In effect, by using half the detection limit, nondetects in the EC5-8 aromatics contributed 20% of the risk for the indoor air pathway. The effect on the leaching pathway was similar. The sensitivity of the RBSLs to EC5-8 detection limits warrants additional BTEX analysis as part of the protocol for assessing risks.

Book excerpt: A petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) sensor for the Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) has been developed by the Tri-Services (e.g. Army, Navy, and Air Force) to characterize the distribution of POL contaminants on military sites. The sensor is based on the detection of POL contaminants using a laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrometer. The SCAPS POL sensor has been shown to be a valuable tool for the rapid screening of POL contamination in the subsurface. However, many factors can affect the LIF response of a particular fuel at a particular site. These include fuel type, age of spill (e.g. weathering) and soil type. The LIF sensor also detects fluorescence from any naturally occurring fluorophores, including humic substances and fluorescent minerals. these factors lead to the development of an independent procedure for the verification of the POL sensor response. This paper describes a field portable total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbon (TRPH) method based on EPA Method 418.1 and its application to on site validation of the SCAPS POL sensor response at a number of contaminated sites.

Book excerpt: In the advent of an oil spill in coastal waters, it would be highly desirable to be able to detect the migration of oil into the sediments using techniques in the field rather than waiting for the results of sophisticated laboratory analysis. A rapid method for estimating the relative concentration of oil in sediments was developed and may effectively be employed in the field by non-technical personnel. The method employs a TLC (thin-layer chromatographic) technique to concentrate, rather than separate, the fluorescent compounds in oil in one area of the chromatogram. The limit of detection on the chromatogram is 2 micrograms of Empire Mix or Saudi Arabian crude oil. This method is not intended to identify sources of oil in sediments (finger-printing), nor to determine the total quantity of oil in sediments; rather, it is a rapid, inexpensive field method for locating areas where the sediments contain oil and for estimating the relative amount of oil in comparison to adjacent areas. The utility of the method has been demonstrated in trials conducted aboard ship during a sampling trip in the Gulf of Mexico and on sediment samples collected in response to the ARGO MERCHANT spill incident.

Book excerpt: Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) fractional analysis and tiered risk assessments at petroleum release sites are replacing cleanup approaches based upon total TPH concentrations. Field demonstrations of the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Criteria Working Group (TPHCWG) approach for assessing human health risk at petroleum release sites were performed at eight Department of Defense installations. One site also provided an opportunity to demonstrate the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection methodology and compare the approaches. Two lessons learned from the field demonstrations were: (1) TPH fractional analysis approaches provide a scientific bases for assessing risk and implementing appropriate criteria alone; and (2) the TPHCWG approach should not be used at relatively "fresh" petroleum product release sites because benzene, a known human carcinogen, is likely to be present at concentrations high enough to dominate cleanup decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several methods have been proposed to replace the Freon(TM)-extraction method to determine total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content. For reasons of cost, sensitivity, precision, or simplicity, none of the replacement methods are feasible for analysis of radioactive samples at our facility. We have developed a method to measure total petroleum hydrocarbon content in aqueous sample matrixes using total organic carbon (total carbon) determination. The total carbon content (TC1) of the sample is measured using a total organic carbon analyzer. The sample is then contacted with a small volume of non-pokar solvent to extract the total petroleum hydrocarbons. The total carbon content of the resultant aqueous phase of the extracted sample (TC2) is measured. Total petroleum hydrocarbon content is calculated (TPH = TC1-TC2). The resultant data are consistent with results obtained using Freon(TM) extraction followed by infrared absorbance.
