Book excerpt: Ranking - the algorithmic decision on how relevant an information artifact is for a given information need and the sorting of artifacts by their concluded relevancy - is an integral part of every search engine. In this book we investigate how structured Web data can be leveraged for ranking with the goal to improve the effectiveness of search. We propose new solutions for ranking using on-the-fly data integration and experimentally analyze and evaluate them against the latest baselines.

Book excerpt: The vast amount of data available on the web has led to the need for effective retrieval techniques to transform that data into usable machine knowledge. But the creation of integrated knowledge, especially knowledge about the same entity from different web data sources, is a challenging task requiring the solving of interoperability problems. This book addresses the problem of knowledge retrieval and integration from heterogeneous web sources, and proposes a holistic semantic knowledge retrieval and integration approach to creating knowledge graphs on-demand from diverse web sources. Semantic Web Technologies have evolved as a novel approach to tackle the problem of knowledge integration from heterogeneous data, but because of the Extraction-Transformation-Load approach that dominates the process, knowledge retrieval and integration from web data sources is either expensive, or full physical integration of the data is impeded by restricted access. Focusing on the representation of data from web sources as pieces of knowledge belonging to the same entity which can then be synthesized as a knowledge graph helps to solve interoperability conflicts and allow for a more cost-effective integration approach, providing a method that enables the creation of valuable insights from heterogeneous web data. Empirical evaluations to assess the effectiveness of this holistic approach provide evidence that the methodology and techniques proposed in this book help to effectively integrate the disparate knowledge spread over heterogeneous web data sources, and the book also demonstrates how three domain applications of law enforcement, job market analysis, and manufacturing, have been developed and managed using the approach.

The ongoing development of new experimental methods gives rise to an increasingly wide range of data sets, which in turn must be combined to allow more integrative views of biological systems. Indeed, the growing prominence of systems biology, where mathematical models characterize behaviors observed in experiments of di?erent types, emphasizes the importance of data integration to the life sciences. In this context, the representation of models of biological behavior as data in turn gives rise to challenges relating to provenance, data quality, annotation, etc., all of which are associated with signi?cant research activities within computer science. The Data Integration in the Life Sciences (DILS) Workshop Series brings together data and knowledge management researchers from the computer s- ence research community with bioinformaticians and computational biologists, to improve the understanding of how emerging data integration techniques can address requirements identi?ed in the life sciences.

Book excerpt: Quantifying the social and economic value that geospatial information contributes to modern society is a complex task. To construct reliable and consistent valuation measures requires an understanding of the sequence of processes that starts with data acquisition, and leads to decision-makers’ choices that impact society. GEOValue explores each step in this complex value chain from the viewpoint of domain experts spanning disciplines that range from the technical side of data acquisition and management to the social sciences that provide the framework to assess the benefit to society. The book is intended to provide foundational understanding of the techniques and complexities of each step in the process. As such it is intended to be assessable to a reader without prior training in data acquisition systems, information systems, or valuation methods. In addition, a number of case studies are provided that demonstrate the use of geospatial information as a critical input for evaluation of policy pertaining to a wide range of application areas, such as agricultural and environmental policy, natural catastrophes, e-government and transportation systems.

Book excerpt: The present work covers the latest developments and discoveries related to information reuse and integration in academia and industrial settings. The need for dealing with the large volumes of data being produced and stored in the last decades and the numerous systems developed to deal with these is increasingly necessary. Not all these developments could have been achieved without the investing large amounts of resources. Over time, new data sources evolve and data integration continues to be an essential and vital requirement. Furthermore, systems and products need to be revised to adapt new technologies and needs. Instead of building these from scratch, researchers in the academia and industry have realized the benefits of reusing existing components that have been well tested. While this trend avoids reinventing the wheel, it comes at the cost of finding the optimum set of existing components to be utilized and how they should be integrated together and with the new non-existing components which are to be developed. These nontrivial tasks have led to challenging research problems in the academia and industry. These issues are addressed in this book, which is intended to be a unique resource for researchers, developers and practitioners.
