Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Provisional Check List of Some Common Native and Introduced Forest Plants in Hawaii Any mistakes are our own, and we recognize that this list leaves opportunities for refinement. For example, when one or more Hawaiian names are given to different Species, we have somewhat arbitrarily listed one of these as the preferred name and the others in parentheses. Would a different choice be better? Until such questions are settled, we hope this list will prove acceptable as interim attempt to clarify and standardize local usage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Range Grasses of California To apply the best methods of range management, the stockman must be able to judge the condition of the range for himself. To do this he must know the principal forage plants, their period of life, and their requirements as to reproduction. The illustrated keys, brief descriptions, and pictures of the plants should assist him in this. The purpose of this bulletin is (1) to familiarize stockmen with the more important grasses of the State and show where they grow, and (2) to point out their forage value and the conditions under which the different kinds reproduce under grazing. This is a necessary pre liminary to the development of state-wide range reseeding methods now under investigation. In the preparation of this paper the authors have made use of the valuable collections and data in the grass herbarium of the United States Department of Agriculture. Several Of the illustrations were lent by the Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum): A Pasture and Green Fodder Crop for Hawaii From the relatively high protein content Shown in table 6 it seems probable that the samples were taken from the plant crop when the forage was leafy and immature. Langer states further (6, p. 65) that tests Of the digestibility Of Napier grass have Shown its nutritive ratio to be which com pares very favorably with the better-quality grasses. Further trials on the digestibility Of this grass are needed, for it must be remembered that the nutritive ratio of a grass is much narrower in an immature grass than in a mature one. For feeding young growing calves and dairy cows in milk, Napier grass should be cut at a rather immature stage, with the plants from 3 to 5 feet in height, so as to get the higher protein content, while for fattening beef cattle it might be fed at a Slightly more advanced stage in growth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Derivation of the Flora of Hawaii Owing to their extreme isolation, the Hawaiian Islands are of special interest both to the geographer and the biologist. With a combined area of 6,454 square miles, they are further removed from any continental area than is any other region of equal size upon the globe. They are 2,000 miles from North America, the nearest continent, and the nearest islands of any importance, the Marquesas, are 1,860 miles distant. There are two very different views held as to the origin of the archipelago. The one most commonly accepted is that the islands, which are entirely volcanic, were thrown up by volcanic activity from the ocean depths, and that they have always been completely isolated. At present the archipelago is surrounded by very deep water. Within forty miles of the shores the ocean is upward of 10,000 feet in depth, and between the islands and the American coast is an enormous area of deep water, in places reaching more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is believed by some students of the subject, however, that the islands have not always been so isolated as at present. This view has recently been taken by Pilsbry. The advocates of this theory believe that there was formerly a much larger area of land in the Pacific, including Hawaii, which was connected more or less intimately with the great land masses of the Southern Pacific, now represented by Australasia and Indo-Malaysia. The multitude of islands constituting Polynesia is believed to be merely the remains of a once extensive land mass, - either a single continent, or several large continental islands, like Australia. This great continental area has been undergoing subsidence since early Tertiary times, and the islands now existing are the tips of mountain masses, - often volcanic, - superimposed upon this submerged continental area. Should this latter hypothesis prove correct, we must assume that the large volcanic masses, rising to nearly 14,000 feet in the case of Mauna Kea, have been formed upon a land area which has sunk in the course of ages as many feet below its former level, since on nearly all sides the archipelago is at present surrounded by very deep water.
