Book excerpt: This book reflects on several aspects of life like nature, flowers, books, children etc., Man from birth to death experiences several problems, several emotions and several feelings. Joys and sorrows are inseparable in life. We are able to transcend our joys and sorrows when we give expression to those feelings of joys and sorrows in an artistic form. This book has given adequate satisfaction to the authors in writing out their different reactions to the turbulent and exciting aspects of life. Besides inner joy, it satisfies the quest of the artists in establishing their individuality and real identity. It also questions the several traditional practices in the conventional society ruled by men. Very often the creative urge of several persons do not find the correct channel. That is why many are not able to come up with their ideas. The publication of this book gives some sort of a spiritual uplift to the authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random Thoughts attempts compiling the views, feelings and moods of the 'society' whose contemplations usually disappear in the miasmic haze of the so-called 'mediocrity' of a common man. The feelings, though may not necessarily fall in any of the categories of poetry in the classical forms of verse, rhyme, ode, sonnet or elegy, but essentially connect with the society on assorted and diverse issues that affect us daily. This collection serves a platter, which, if digested well, can ginger up the feelings of the masses and urge them to be cognizant of the sensitivities and compassions of the fellow humans. These poems traverse issues that are neither inter-connected nor consistent but surely add variety to this assortment.

Book excerpt: Lessons for leaders on resolving the ongoing struggle between instinct and the creative mind Kings, heads of government, and corporate executives lead thousands of people and manage endless resources, but may not have mastery over themselves. Often leaders know that right action is important, but have little (if any) understanding of what prevents them from acting in accordance with their intentions. In this important book, leadership expert Richard Daft portrays this dilemma as a struggle between instinct (elephant) and intention (the executive) using the most current research on the intentional vs. the habitual mind to explain how this phenomenon occurs. Based on current research and real-life examples Offers leaders a method for directing themselves more productively Written by an expert in leadership, organizational performance, and change management Through real-life examples and recent studies in psychology, management and Eastern spirituality Daft provides guidance to all of us who struggle finding our own balance and cultivating the behavior of others.

Book excerpt: My name is Norman Lawrence Rowlston, and the following poems represent my thoughts and ideas on all that has happened to me over the last 30 years. After a considerable period of illness, which culminated in a heart transplant in 1996, I decided to try my hand at writing. Some 20 or more of the poems have been published by companies in the USA and in the UK. In America, the main publisher of my works is the International Society of Poets, and in the UK the main one is United Press. Several of my poems are reflections of time spent on the way to and in hospital at certain times; the main one of these is an ode of tribute to the nursing staff, and that is the one entitled Angels of the Night. Although not a sufferer of Alzheimer's disease, I was asked to produce a couple of poems for publishing in their newsletters, including Unseen Images. Marching was written to show support for the Rural Life Association. Justice was in answer to the letting off of a Judge without any response after he had committed a crime. A Dying Breed was a cry from the heart after the butchery of the mining industry by Margaret Thatcher. This was dear to my heart as I have lived most of my life in a heavily endowed mining area, now defunct. I also worked down the pit on two periods. Love is a tribute to my wife of 37 years, Joan, whilst A Prayer to Love was written specifically for the wedding of one of my step grandchildren. The poem was read out during the church service by my eldest grandson. Graduation was written to show my pride in my son and daughter on graduating from University. 9/11 was the idea behind Pray for America. This was published in some newspapers in both America and Hawaii. There are a few poems which may sound strange to your ears, but they are literally correct as they have been written in Yorkshire dialect, a mode I intend to do more in. Nonsense poetry is included with two of the ones I wrote for a children's magazine, and they are Snow and The Obligatatum. The Tramp is based on a true story from this area. All the artwork contained in this booklet has been produced by my wife, Joan Rowlston. Please read and enjoy; half of the joy of writing is knowing that someone else is also getting pleasure from your efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It remains somewhat of a mystery, even after all the advantages of contemporary times have been lavishly bestowed upon present day humanity, that the ills of pervasive suffering still persist on the world scene. Of course, we know from the Buddha’s declaration of His Four Noble Truths, that suffering here on Earth will never go away entirely. Still, unnecessary suffering, a type of misery that has viable solutions, also remains constant — despite the fact that humanity has had plenty of time to apply these readily available stopgaps. When looking at this perplexing situation, the conscious observer cannot but notice, often painfully so, that narrowness of mind lies at the root of both the problem of suffering itself, and its tardy removal. In view of all this, when one considers ultimate solutions, there is nothing that compares with that of Universality. Universal religious outlook, universal philosophical perspective, universal compassion, universal service of mankind, a more universal mindset — even a more universally-based business and politics — all would be welcome alternatives to the ponderous and ineffective arsenal of methodical weapons that nations and peoples are presently utilizing to try to stem the tide of pervasive human suffering. True, religion nowadays has become an obvious caricature of itself, and philosophy has turned into a job and a career instead of a means for the revelation of truth. Even altruistic service, after the many attempts it has made towards drying up the ocean of human misery, has shown us its limitations and its downside.

Book excerpt: Literally thousands of books on poetry can be found. Some on love, some about little children. Then, there are some books each containing poems on a wide variety of different subjects. So, what makes this book any different? Well, for one thing, each poem in this book consists of no more than 20 words. Yes, very short poems. Some words are hyphenated. I consider them as a single word. Anyway, keeping all poems short with less than 20 words was intentional, just to be different. This book of poems is divided into several chapters whereby many different areas of interests are categorized and represented. Some are funny, some are serious. And, I must admit, some don't make much sense at all. Then later I would ask myself, "what in the world was I thinking?" But, I had fun writing them so I left them in anyway. When you read each individual poem, draw your own conclusion as to what each means. Some of you may understand them immediately. Some of you may like them, some of you may not. Then again, you may ask yourself, "what in the world was he thinking?" Fred C. Gilmer

Book excerpt: Reconstructing the literary and philosophical reaction to Adam Smith's dictum that man is a labouring animal above and before all else, this study explores the many ways in which Romantic writers presented idle contemplation as the central activity in human life. By contrasting the British response to Smith's political economy with that of contemporary German Idealists, Richard Adelman also uses this consideration of the importance of idleness to Romantic aesthetics to chart the development of a distinctly British idealism in the last decades of the eighteenth century. Exploring the work of Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, Friedrich Schiller, William Cowper, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Mary Wollstonecraft and many of their contemporaries, this study pinpoints a debate over human activity and capability taking place between 1750 and 1830, and considers its social and political consequences for the cultural theory of the early nineteenth century.

Chinese traditions of Taoism, Confucianism, and Chan Buddhism are included, in addition to Zen Buddhism and Hinduism. Encounters between Christian and Hindu or Buddhist monastics have been occurring for several decades, most notably signalized in the 1998 book The Gethsemani Encounter. The themes purity of heart and contemplation are central to the monastic quest and they are also universal, offering a meeting point, an area of spirituality that is shared by all the traditions involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the work of the "Sacred Choices Initiative" of the Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive Health, and Ethics. The purpose of this Packard and Ford Foundation supported initiative is to attempt to change international discourse on family planning and to rescue this debate from superficial sloganeering by drawing on the moral stores of the world's major and indigenous religions. In many of the world's religions there is a restrictive and pro-natalist view on family planning, and this is one legitimate reading of those religious traditions. As the essays in this volume demonstrate, however, this is not the only legitimate or orthodox view. These authors show that the paramaters of orthodoxy are wider and gentler than that, and that the great religious traditions are wiser and more variegated and nuanced than a simple repetition of the most conservative views would suggest. This theme is carried out in essays on each of the world's major religious traditions, written by scholar practitioners of those faiths.
