Book Synopsis Martha Jefferson Randolph, Daughter of Monticello by : Cynthia A. Kierner
Download or read book Martha Jefferson Randolph, Daughter of Monticello written by Cynthia A. Kierner and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-05-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the oldest and favorite daughter of Thomas Jefferson, Martha "Patsy" Jefferson Randolph (1772-1836) was extremely well educated, traveled in the circles of presidents and aristocrats, and was known on two continents for her particular grace and sincerity. Yet, as mistress of a large household, she was not spared the tedium, frustration, and great sorrow that most women of her time faced. Though Patsy's name is familiar because of her famous father, Cynthia Kierner is the first historian to place Patsy at the center of her own story, taking readers into the largely ignored private spaces of the founding era. Randolph's life story reveals the privileges and limits of celebrity and shows that women were able to venture beyond their domestic roles in surprising ways. Following her mother's death, Patsy lived in Paris with her father and later served as hostess at the President's House and at Monticello. Her marriage to Thomas Mann Randolph, a member of Congress and governor of Virginia, was often troubled. She and her eleven children lived mostly at Monticello, greeting famous guests and debating issues ranging from a woman's place to slavery, religion, and democracy. And later, after her family's financial ruin, Patsy became a fixture in Washington society during Andrew Jackson's presidency. In this extraordinary biography, Kierner offers a unique look at American history from the perspective of this intelligent, tactfully assertive woman.

Book Synopsis The Randolph Family of England, Scotland and Virginia, History and Genealogy by : William McCreight
Download or read book The Randolph Family of England, Scotland and Virginia, History and Genealogy written by William McCreight and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents histories and genealogies of the Randolph family in Scotland, England, Colonial Virginia, and the United States of America. In addition to the Randolphs, it includes the histories and genealogies of seven important English families that are ancestors of the Randolphs. In Scotland, the Randolph name can be traced, with confidence, back to Sir Thomas Randolph, Lord Chamberlain of Scotland in about 1250, but the family was probably founded in about 1190 in Littelsdaleshire, Scotland. The genealogical line itself can be traced with confidence back to Crinan of Dunkeld died 1045. He founded the Scottish royal house of Dunkeld. In England, the family can be traced back to Robert Randolph in South Sussex, who died in 1602. British archives contain earlier English Randolph primary sources, back to the beginning of the second millennium AD, shortly after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. However, it is difficult to construct a reliable unbroken English Randolph family genealogical line up to Robert Randolph. Nevertheless, there is considerable circumstantial evidence in primary and secondary sources for descent from John Randall of Hamsey, whose will was, dated 1552. A great many excellent books have been written about the Randolph family, and numerous historical documents are available. However, to my knowledge much of the content of this book about the Randolphs has not been published before. Much of the content about seven other important families in England, from whom the Randolphs are descended, dating back to 858 AD, has not been published in connection with the Randolph family before. This book is the first in a series of three volumes. Volume 2 provides thirty-four histories and genealogies of ancestors of the Randolphs in virtually every European country and parts of the Middle East. Volume 2 contains 5,371 references and notes. This is too many to include in volume 2 itself. Volume 3 contains the references and notes to volume 2."

This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About this volume This book will only be of interest to readers interested in the historical references and source material for the names in the genealogies in volume 2, The Randolph Family, Their Continental European Ancestors, History, and Genealogy Volume 2. This is the third in a series of three volumes concerning the history and genealogy of the Randolph family in Virginia, England, Scotland, and virtually all other European countries. Volume 3 contains only the genealogical reference and historical source material for volume 2. Volume 2 requires over 5,000 genealogical references with 394 pages. This is too many to include in volume 2 itself, so they are contained here in volume 3. About the other two volumes Volume 1 concerns the history and genealogy of the Randolph family in Scotland, England, colonial Virginia, and the United States of America. In addition to the Randolphs, it includes the histories and genealogies of seven important English families that are ancestors of the Randolphs. Volume 2 concerns the histories and genealogies of the Randolph family's ancestors across Europe. There are a great many excellent books about the Randolph family, but to my knowledge most of this material has not been published in connection with the Randolph family before. Due to intermarriage between the noble families of Europe, the Randolphs are descended from families in virtually every European country as well as the Middle East.

Book Synopsis Scandal at Bizarre by : Cynthia A. Kierner
Download or read book Scandal at Bizarre written by Cynthia A. Kierner and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1790s Richard Randolph was accused of fathering a child by his sister-in-law, Nancy, and murdering the baby shortly after its birth. Rumors about the incident, which occurred during a visit to the plantation of close family friends, spread like wildfire. Randolph found himself on trial for the crime largely because of the public outrage fueled by these rumors. The rest of the household suffered too, and only Nancy, who later married the esteemed New York statesman Gouverneur Morris, would find any degree of happiness. A tale of family passion, betrayal, and deception, Scandal at Bizarre is a fascinating historical portrait of the social and political realities of a world long vanished.

Book excerpt: From Stonewall Award winner Brandy Colbert comes a novel about first love, family, and hidden secrets that will stay with you long after turning the last page. Dove "Birdie" Randolph works hard to be the perfect daughter and follow the path her parents have laid out for her: She quit playing her beloved soccer, she keeps her nose buried in textbooks, and she's on track to finish high school at the top of her class. But then Birdie falls hard for Booker, a sweet boy with a troubled past . . . whom she knows her parents will never approve of. When her estranged aunt Carlene returns to Chicago and moves into the family's apartment above their hair salon, Birdie notices the tension building at home. Carlene is sweet, friendly, and open-minded -- she's also spent decades in and out of treatment facilities for addiction. As Birdie becomes closer to both Booker and Carlene, she yearns to spread her wings. But when long-buried secrets rise to the surface, everything she's known to be true is turned upside down.
Download or read book Fitz Randolph written by L V F Randolph and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fitz Randolph family has a fascinating history, beginning with its origins in the early Middle Ages and traced through centuries of English nobles and royalty. Researches into the records of old revealed the Medieval emergence of the Fitz Randolph name, and the clan's frequent and enduring presence in the noble houses of England. From Norman times onward, appearances of the name are mentioned in records - through meticulous research of available writings, the author pieces together strains of the lineage. By the 19th century, descendants of the Medieval-era Fitz Randolphs are found in several parishes across England, whilst several members had travelled to the North America to establish a new life in the colonies. The investigation is illustrated with family trees and photographs of relevant locations. Acknowledging that reliable familial records were in short supply prior to the mid-16th century, the author concedes that the pictures he has compiled is incomplete. However, as a genealogical effort and supplement to further study into the subject of the Fitz Randolphs and other minor nobilities of England, this book is a reasonable resource.
