Book excerpt: The key to understanding the calamitous Afghan war is the complex, ultimately failed relationship between the powerful, duplicitous Karzai family and the United States, brilliantly portrayed here by the former Kabul bureau chief for The Washington Post. The United States went to Afghanistan on a simple mission: avenge the September 11 attacks and drive the Taliban from power. This took less than two months. Over the course of the next decade, the ensuing fight for power and money—supplied to one of the poorest nations on earth, in ever-greater amounts—left the region even more dangerous than before the first troops arrived. At the center of this story is the Karzai family. President Hamid Karzai and his brothers began the war as symbols of a new Afghanistan: moderate, educated, fluent in the cultures of East and West, and the antithesis of the brutish and backward Taliban regime. The siblings, from a prominent political family close to Afghanistan’s former king, had been thrust into exile by the Soviet war. While Hamid Karzai lived in Pakistan and worked with the resistance, others moved to the United States, finding work as waiters and managers before opening their own restaurants. After September 11, the brothers returned home to help rebuild Afghanistan and reshape their homeland with ambitious plans. Today, with the country in shambles, they are in open conflict with one another and their Western allies. Joshua Partlow’s clear-eyed analysis reveals the mistakes, squandered hopes, and wasted chances behind the scenes of a would-be political dynasty. Nothing illustrates the arc of the war and America’s relationship with Afghanistan—from optimism to despair, friendship to enmity—as neatly as the story of the Karzai family itself, told here in its entirety for the first time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Rand Family in the United States Although this Genealogy of the Rand family - which is a labor of love - has been uninterruptedly in preparation during several years, its inadequacy to her ideal is fully recognized by its compiler. Its publication has been de layed from time to time in an effort to obtain fuller data with which to bridge over the hiatus existing in certain lines of descent. She has conscientiously investigated every public and private source of information known to her; a voluminous correspondence has been carried on by her with reference to family records; the various public libraries of New York and Boston, and the Historical library of Cornell University have been diligently, and she thinks exhaustively searched in this department, and various New England towns which where the early homes of the race on this side of the Atlantic have been visited, and their church and probate records personally examined. Notwithstanding this careful and protracted search it is still entirely probable that there exist private family memoranda, letters and records which if brought forward would throw much light on doubtful points. In this way - and probably in this way only - the vacancies in the ranks may be ultimately closed up. It is thought that the publication of the material now in hand may stimulate and assist individual research, and any additional data which may be forthcoming will be welcomed and incorpor ated in a future edition. It is a matter for deep regret that so little is known with certainty of the English antecedents of the family, but time and persistent labor may yet pierce the mystery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellen Emmet Rand (1875-1941) was one of the most important and prolific portraitists in the United States in the first decades of the twentieth century. She negotiated her career, reputation, family, and finances in modern and commercially savvy ways-revealing the complex negotiations needed to balance these competing pressures. Engaging with newly available archival documents and featuring scholars with radically different approaches to visual culture, this edited collection not only seeks to interrogate the meaning of Rand's portraits and her career, but indeed to rethink gender, art, race, business, and modernism in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Chicago Tribune Favorite Book of the Year A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year Ayn Rand’s books have attracted three generations of readers, shaped the Libertarian movement, influenced White House economic policies throughout the Reagan years and beyond, and inspired the Tea Party movement. Yet twenty-eight years after her death, readers know very little about her life. In this seminal biography, Anne C. Heller traces the controversial author’s life from her childhood in Bolshevik Russia to her years as a Hollywood screenwriter, the publication of her blockbuster novels, and the rise and fall of the cult that worshipped her in the 1950s and 1960s. Based on original research in Russia and scores of interviews with Rand’s acquaintances and former acolytes, Ayn Rand and the World She Made is a comprehensive and eye-opening portrait of one of the most significant and improbable figures of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The journal and diaries document various aspects of the seed, vegetable, and fruit selling business. The first volume is a journal that covers the period January 1-April 19, 1843, and mentions Roxbury, Cambridge, and the author's father traveling to New York for business. The second volume is a business diary that covers a portion of1845 and 1846. It contains entries for vegetable prices, weather conditions, sales figures, and trips to Rhode Island and New York. There are references to greenhouses, various vegetables, and a visit on August 6 to Mr. Bartlett and his pears, which is likely a reference to Enoch Bartlett (1779-1860). The third volume is a notebook with genealogical notes on the Rand Family.
