Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Sussex Where I have referred to authorities other than those already used in my former book, I have usually acknowledged the debt in the text or in a footnote. Many of the biographical details are from the Dictionary of Historical Biography. I have also had the great advantage of being able to consult two volumes of the monumental Victoria County History. In particular I have collated Mr. P. M. Johnston's valuable articles on Sussex architecture with my own notes, point by point, by which my descriptions have gained considerably in correctness. Download or read book Off the Beaten Track in Sussex (Classic Reprint) written by Arthur Stanley Cooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Off the Beaten Track in Sussex Some of these blemishes are consequent on the passage of time necessary to cover so large an area by frequent personal visitation. Some thirty-seven rambles are described, about equally divided between the east and west divisions of the county. Although indications of route are given, chiefly for the benefit of strangers, it does not claim to be a guide-book. Its size would preclude such a use. Neither does it pretend to be exhaustive. Much more remains to be dealt with. Sincere acknowledgments are due to the various sources from which information has been gathered, the Sussex Archaeological Collections, as usual, having been largely drawn upon. Much of the interest of the book will be due to the number and variety of its illustrations, by twenty-five different pens. They are all reproduced from original black-and-white drawings. My thanks are specially given to the members of the Brighton Arts Club, present and past, no less than twenty of whom have con tributed Sketches. One of the past members, Mr. Arthur B. Packham, has been most generous with his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marsh Country Rambles It is fortunate that all ramblers are not writers, or life would be too brief for the perusal of even their best reminiscences. Perhaps this addition to the literature of walking tours can only be excused on the plea that life is kaleidoscopic, lending itself, readily enough, to infinitely varied presentation. Men write of their rambles, as of their reading, again and again each views such pleasures from his own standpoint; each has his story to tell, and cannot believe that it has been told before. Download or read book Women Walking written by Karin Sagner and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegant survey of more than 60 works of art chronicles the nascent liberation when women began to walk freely by themselves in public. At the close of the eighteenth century, women began to discover a new sense of freedom, adventure, and self-determination, simply by walking in public unaccompanied. Previously, solitary walks by women were considered unseemly. An unaccompanied hike in the country was beyond imagination; to promenade by oneself on city boulevards was unthinkable. This book features evocative paintings of women doing just that, by a range of artists, from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, among them British portraitist Thomas Gainsborough, the scandalous Gustave Courbet, Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, American masters Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent, and Nabi artist Félix Vallotton. With paintings as her guide, Karin Sagner takes us on a visual journey through this vital yet oft-overlooked aspect of women’s emancipation, from the promenades of the nobility to everyday walks in the city, on gentle strolls in the country or hikes up mountain summits. Quotes by luminaries like the Marquise de Sévigné, Jane Austen, and Simone de Beauvoir gracefully support her points. A thoughtful gift for graduates, teachers, or Mother’s Day, this subtle but profound book is not only an illuminating history but a beautiful art historical survey and an inspirational guide.
Download or read book The Graduate written by Charles Webb and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-04-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis for Mike Nichols' acclaimed 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman -- and for successful stage productions in London and on Broadway -- this classic novel about a naive college graduate adrift in the shifting social and sexual mores of the 1960s captures with hilarity and insight the alienation of youth and the disillusionment of an era. The Graduate When Benjamin Braddock graduates from a small Eastern college and moves home to his parents' house, everyone wants to know what he's going to do with his life. Embittered by the emptiness of his college education and indifferent to his grim prospects -- grad school? a career in plastics? -- Benjamin falls haplessly into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, the relentlessly seductive wife of his father's business partner. It's only when beautiful coed Elaine Robinson comes home to visit her parents that Benjamin, now smitten, thinks he might have found some kind of direction in his life. Unfortuately for Benjamin, Mrs. Robinson plays the role of protective mother as well as she does the one of mistress. A wondrously fierce and absurd battle of wills ensues, with love and idealism triumphing over the forces of corruption and conformity.

Download or read book Ashenden written by W. Somerset Maugham and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-01-01T20:46:22Z with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I W. Somerset Maugham, already by then an established playwright and author, was recruited to be a British intelligence agent. These stories reflect his wartime experiences in intelligence gathering. Though fictionalized, they managed to retain enough authentic elements for Winston Churchill to advise Maugham that their publication might be a violation of the Official Secrets Act, resulting in the author burning an additional 14 stories. Set in various locales across the continent, these remaining Ashenden stories are a precursor to the jet-setting spy novels of the 1950s and 1960s. Maugham is known as a master short story writer and these stories are no exception, combining wit and realism to create memorable characters in a unique and highly critical portrait of wartime espionage. Initially released to a mixed reception—with an early review by D. H. Lawrence being especially scathing—Ashenden has since been credited as an inspiration for numerous authors, including John Le Carré, Graham Greene, and Raymond Chandler. The latter in particular was especially impressed, writing in 1950, “There are no other great spy stories—none at all. I have been searching and I know.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
Book Synopsis Last Night in Twisted River by : John Irving
Download or read book Last Night in Twisted River written by John Irving and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, in the cookhouse of a logging and sawmill settlement in northern New Hampshire, an anxious twelve-year-old boy mistakes the local constable’s girlfriend for a bear. Both the twelve-year-old and his father become fugitives, forced to run from Coos County—to Boston, to southern Vermont, to Toronto—pursued by the implacable constable. Their lone protector is a fiercely libertarian logger, once a river driver, who befriends them. In a story spanning five decades, Last Night in Twisted River depicts the recent half-century in the United States as “a living replica of Coos County, where lethal hatreds were generally permitted to run their course.” What further distinguishes Last Night in Twisted River is the author’s unmistakable voice—the inimitable voice of an accomplished storyteller.
