Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Ireland I do not mean that the Irish have made Galway a positive expression of their genius, an imaginative and symbolic city. Fortune has seen to it that that was impossible. But I do mean to say that amid the solid ruins Of this city, amid this scene Of abandoned greatness, the Irish have found their most interesting encampment on a large scale. Galway is Irish in a sense in which Dublin and Belfast and Cork and Derry are not Irish but cosmopolitan. Its people, their speech, their dress, their swarthy complexions, their black hair, their eyes like blue flames, excite the imagination with curious surmises. Galway city - technically, it is only Galway town - is to the discoverer Of Ireland something like what Chapman's Homer was to Keats. It is a clue, a provocation, an enticement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Eirinn These pages are the outcome of about three thousand miles of touring within the four seas of Ireland. They were written more or less hurriedly, as opportunity offered, here and there on the road, at irregular intervals, generally out of reach of books of reference; and with the sole object of sharing the writer's thoughts and feelings with certain Irish exiles on the other side of the World. It never occurred to me at first that Irish people at home would take any special interest in my efforts to describe the things I saw and-express the things I felt; and even when some of'the literary men of Irish Ireland urged me to publish the Rambles in an Irish newspaper, I ima gined that their judgment had been obscured by their friendship. Nevertheless I acted on their suggestion, and it would be more than churlish on my part not to acknow ledge the keen gratification I have felt over the reception given to the articles as they appeared in The United Irishman, and afterwards in Sinn Fein. When they appeared in The New York Daily News their reception was also most cordial, and from many parts of the United States I received kindly greetings from people I had never met, suggesting that the series should be published in book form. Like suggestions came from Ireland and from the Argentine Republic. The present publishers came forward, and this volume is the result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Rambles: And Other Fugitive Pieces, in Prose and Verse Beautiful and storied scenes which have soothed and elevated the mind naturally inspire a feeling of gratitude. It is this feeling which prompted the author of the present volume to write a record of his English Rambles. It also was his wish, in dwelling thus upon the rural loveliness and the literary and historical associations of England, to afford sympathetic guidance and useful suggestion to other American travellers, who, like himself might be attracted to roam among the shrines of our mother land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Creel of Irish Stories The ef'fect of Letterglas's solitude and verdure somehow seems to be heightened if one notices its single visible sign of human handiwork. This is a road-track, now all but quite grassed over, leading into the valley from its open end, where the Clonmoragh highway passes, and stopping aimlessly at the slope immediately below the Nick, having first flung two or three zig-zag loops up the hill side. A rust-eaten, handleless shovel, and the wreck of an overturned wheelbarrow, still mark the point where the work was abandoned on a misty morning in April, more than fifty springs ago; but the track itself is now merely a most faint difference of shade in the sward, which has crept back again indefatig ably, even where the austere road-metal had been thrown clattering down. M When pressed to expound this dark saying Flurry smiled wanly and snipped a second line in the hair of the puppy was pinned between his legs. I was almost relieved when a try to bite on the part of the puppy imparted to Flurry's lang a transient warmth but the reaction was only temporary. It'd be as good for me to make a present of this lot Welby as to take the price he's offering me, ' he went on, got up and took off his highly-scented kennel-coat, but I be bothered fighting him. Come on in and have somet drink tea myself at this hour.' If he had said toast and water it would have seemed than was suitable to such a frame of mind. As to the house I thought that when the day came that Flurry Knox could not be bothered with fighting old Welby things were becoming serious, but I kept this opinion to myself and merely offered an admiring comment on the roses that were blooming on the front of the house. Property was very unsafe; for although the turbulent outrages that had spread about desolation upon a more fearful scale, had somewhat still there were too many of those violent and lawless spirits abroad to allow the peacable and quiet, especially if they possessed wealth or property, to sleep in their beds with anything like a sense of security.
