Book excerpt: Abstract: Report of spectral studies on fluorinated hydrocarbons by the Naval Research Laboratory and the University of Oklahoma Research Institute under Contract N7onr-398-T.O.1. Infrared spectra of 40 fluorinated compounds and Raman spectra of 25 compounds are presented. Vibrational assignments are proposed for CH2=CF2, CF2=CF2, CF2=CCl2, CF2=CFCl, CH3-CF3, CH3-CCl3, CF2=CF-CF3, cyclic C4F, and for nine fluorinated aromatics. Application of spectral data to analysis, molecular structure, thermodynamic properties, and molecular forces is discussed. Over 100 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent development of fluorothene plastic now makes available a new material for absorption and scattering cells of superior chemical resistance. The advantages of this material over the fully fluorinated compound (Teflon) are optical transparency, availability of a chemically resistant sealing wax and the thermoplastic properties of the material which allow it to be welded. Raman and infrared spectra of many fluorine compounds that have been impossible to handle in the past may now be successfully studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Raman effect is a most useful tool for the study of molecular vibrations and molecular structure. Information about the structure and symmetry of molecules, as well as about their vibrational energies can be obtained to a reasonable degree of satisfaction from their infrared and Raman vibrational spectra. The body of knowl edqe of the vibrational infrared and Raman spectra of molecules is immense and is now so well organized and understood that it is found to be represented in any stan dard upper level undergraduate curriculum in chemistry. The rotational energies of a molecule and quantitative details about its structure can only be obtained through the techniques of microwave, and high-resolution infrared and Raman spectroscopy of low pressure gases and vapors. The results of such investigations are of interest . not only to the academic scientists, but also to scientists and engineers who are active in applied fields of chemistry and physics, as well as the atmospheric sciences. This book deals with basic investigations of the Raman scattering of light by gases, with some attention also being given to liquid substances. After a brief in troductory chapter that delineates the historical development of Raman spectroscopy of gases, high-resolution rotation-vibrational and pure rotational Raman spectros copy is described in Chapters 2 and 3. The all-important intensity parameter, the Raman scattering cross section, is treated in Chapter 4, while the broadening of Raman lines due to the effects of intermolecular forces is taken up in Chapter 5.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy focuses on the theoretical and experimental aspects of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, with emphasis on detailed group frequency correlations and their vibrational origin. Topics covered include vibrational and rotational spectra, molecular symmetry, methyl and methylene groups, triple bonds and cumulated double bonds, and olefin groups. Aromatic and heteroaromatic rings are also considered, along with carbonyl compounds and molecular vibrations. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with a discussion on the use of Raman and infrared spectroscopy to study the vibrational and rotational frequencies of molecules, paying particular attention to photon energy and degrees of freedom of molecular motion. The quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator and the anharmonic oscillator are described. The next chapter focuses on the experimental techniques and instrumentation needed to measure infrared absorption spectra and Raman spectra. Symmetry is then discussed from the standpoint of the spectroscopist. The following chapters explore the vibrational origin of group frequencies, with an emphasis on mechanical effects; spectra-structure correlations; and the spectra of compounds such as ethers, alcohols, and phenols. The final chapter demonstrates how the frequencies and forms of a nonlinear molecule's normal modes of vibration may be calculated mathematically. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physical scientists.

This book is composed of eight chapters that discuss the methods involved in the production and application of organic halogen compounds and in overcoming contamination problems caused by these compounds. After briefly dealing with the preparation, characteristics, and reactions of organic halogen compounds, this book goes on discussing the fundamental concepts of methods for the detection of halogens in organic compounds, namely, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and fluorine. The following chapter describes the characteristic features, advantages, and disadvantages of ultramicro and submicro chemical methods. A chapter also examines the qualitative and quantitative studies of organic halogen compounds based on the thermal and chemical stability of these compounds. The concluding chapters discuss the interference or interfering effects of halogens and their elimination in the determination of other elements. A list of physical constants of organic halogen compounds of general pharmaceutical and industrial significance is provided. This book is an ideal source for analytical chemists and other workers who are interested in the theoretical bases of the methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raman Spectra of Hydrocarbons: A Data Handbook provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the phenomenon of Raman scattering of light. This book discusses the methods of molecular spectroscopy, which occupy one of the primary places in investigations of the structure and composition of matter. This book begins with an overview of the conditions for obtaining the Raman spectra. This text then examines the spatial directivity and polarization of laser radiation, which makes it easy to measure the polarization properties of the Raman lines and their absolute intensity. The reader is also introduced to the comparison between the intensities of a given line and of the standard, which is carried out according to the rules of photographic photometry. This book discusses as well the spectrum of each hydrocarbon presented in the form of a table containing data on frequencies, intensities, and in several cases degrees of depolarization and width of the Raman lines. This book is a valuable resource for scientists.
