Book excerpt: "A hard-to-get reservation is prized among serious restaurant-goers, but a table limited to members only seems to be the Philadelphia diner's Holy Grail. Palizzi Social Club is 100 years old this year in South Philly, but it was after chef Joey Baldino took over from his late uncle Ernie that business really started to boom. Palizzi has mastered the balance of old-school Italian kitsch and super-high-quality food and cocktails. Once a gathering place for the Abruzzi-American community, Palizzi Social Club is a current hot spot: members can take up to three guests, and if the light is on outside, they're open. In 2017, Palizzi was named Bon Appetit's #4 Best New Restaurant, Esquire's honorable mention best new restaurant, and Eater Philly's #1 restaurant of the year. Chef Joey's menu at Palizzi has a broad Southern Italian scope. Seventy adaptable, accessible recipes throughout include dishes like: Fennel and Orange Salad, Arancini with Ragu and Peas, Spaghetti with Crabs, Stromboli, Hazelnut Torrone. Come on in, and join the club."--

Download or read book My Life on Arthur Avenue written by Salvatore Cappiello and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place where I was born is called Arthur Avenue, located in the Fordham section of New York City's northernmost borough, The Bronx. Much has changed, but when I was growing up Arthur Avenue was the heart of Bronx's Little Italy, a vibrant Italian-American working class neighborhood lined with delis, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and merchants of every kind.I was raised on Arthur Avenue, starting out in a cold-water flat before spending my formative years working in my parent's deli and butcher shop. I went on to open a butcher shop of my own there in my late twenties, shortly before I was incapacitated by Guillain-Barre syndrome.Years later I returned as a purveyor of sundries in front of Ernie's Hardware and, through a series of seemingly fortuitous circumstances, went on to purchase a commercial building on Arthur Avenue. I used the ground level to build Emilia's Family Italian Restaurant, which I owned and operated for many years and which still stands today. My sister and nephew own and operate two vibrant businesses there today -- Mike's Famous Italian Deli in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, and Arthur Avenue Trattoria, the fine Italian family restaurant located next to Emilia's. I learned many lessons on Arthur Avenue that made me a better man. I'm Salvatore Cappiello, and this is my story.

Book Synopsis The Mozza Cookbook by : Nancy Silverton
Download or read book The Mozza Cookbook written by Nancy Silverton and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2014 James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef: the top chef in the country A traditional Italian meal is one of the most comforting—and delicious—things that anyone can enjoy. Award-winning chef Nancy Silverton has elevated that experience to a whole new level at her Los Angeles restaurants Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, co-owned with restaurateurs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. A reservation at Mozza has been the hottest ticket in town since the restaurants opened and diners have been lining up for their wildly popular dishes. Finally, in The Mozza Cookbook, Silverton is sharing these recipes with the rest of the world. The original idea for Mozza came to Nancy at her summer home in Panicale, Italy. And that authentic Italian feel is carried throughout the book as we explore recipes from aperitivo to dolci that she would serve at her tavola at home. But do not confuse authentic with conventional! Under Silverton’s guidance, each bite is more exciting and delectable than the last, with recipes such as: Fried Squash Blossoms with Ricotta Buricotta with Braised Artichokes, Pine Nuts, Currants, and Mint Pesto Mussels al Forno with Salsa Calabrese Fennel Sausage, Panna, and Scallion Pizza Fresh Ricotta and Egg Ravioli with Brown Butter Grilled Quail Wrapped in Pancetta with Sage and Honey Sautéed Cavolo Nero Fritelle di Riso with Nocello-soaked Raisins and Banana Gelato Olive Oil Gelato In the book, Nancy guides you through all the varieties of cheese that she serves at the Mozzarella Bar in the Osteria. And you’ll find all the tricks you need to make homemade pastas, gelato, and pizzas that taste as if they were flown in directly from Italy. Silverton’s lively and encouraging voice and her comprehensive knowledge of the traditions behind this mouthwateringly decadent cuisine make her recipes—both familiar and intricate—easy to follow and hard to resist. It’s no wonder it is so difficult to get a table at Mozza—when you’re cooking these dishes there will be a line out your door as well.

Book Synopsis Phnom Penh Noir by : Christopher G. Moore
Download or read book Phnom Penh Noir written by Christopher G. Moore and published by Asia Document Bureau Limited. This book was released on 2012 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many noir anthologies have inspired writers and publishers around the world to gather novelists to set noir stories in a city. When it comes to noir, not all cities are equal. The history of genocide and dislocation sets Phnom Penh apart from other places. What other city in modern times was emptied of all of his people at gun point, a city abandoned and left as a ghost town? The authors of Phnom Penh Noir take you inside the lives of Cambodians who carry that legacy of that fateful day on 17th April 1975 when the Khmer Rouge arrived and forced the population to evacuate to the countryside. The Khmer Rouge experiment resulted in radical transformation of a society that left a bloody trail, one that left almost no family untouched, and hovers close to the surface in these stories. In Phnom Penh Noir, the stories, lyrics, and cover photograph have joined legendary creative talents like Roland Joffe, James Grady and John Burdett along with a young generation of Cambodians. The noir tales unfold through multiple points of view and enrich the reading experience. Truth, mortality, regret, betrayal, and loss play out in these stories, poetry and lyrics. The authors and publishers will contribute twenty percent of their earnings from this book to selected charity organizations in Cambodia. Official website: www.phnompenhnoir.com

Book Synopsis Lidia's Italy in America by : Lidia Matticchio Bastianich
Download or read book Lidia's Italy in America written by Lidia Matticchio Bastianich and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of America's most beloved chefs and authors, a road trip into the heart of Italian American cooking today—from Chicago deep-dish pizza to the Bronx's eggplant parm—celebrating the communities that redefined what we know as Italian food. As she explores this utterly delectable and distinctive cuisine, Lidia shows us that every kitchen is different, every Italian community distinct, and little clues are buried in each dish: the Sicilian-style semolina bread and briny olives in New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwiches, the Neapolitan crust of New York pizza, and mushrooms (abundant in the United States, but scarce in Italy) stuffed with breadcrumbs, just as peppers or tomatoes are. Lidia shows us how this cuisine is an original American creation and gives recognition where it is long overdue to the many industrious Italians across the country who have honored the traditions of their homeland in a delicious new style. And of course, there are Lidia’s irresistible recipes, including · Baltimore Crab Cakes · Pittsburgh’s Primanti’s Sandwiches · Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza · Eggplant Parmigiana from the Bronx · Gloucester Baked Halibut · Chicken Trombino from Philadelphia · authentic Italian American Meatloaf, and Spaghetti and Meatballs · Prickly Pear Granita from California · and, of course, a handful of cheesecakes and cookies that you’d recognize in any classic Italian bakery This is a loving exploration of a fascinating cuisine—as only Lidia could give us.
