Book Synopsis RAKSHAK ISSUE 1- A HERO AMONG US ORIGIN by : SHAMIK DASGUPTA
Download or read book RAKSHAK ISSUE 1- A HERO AMONG US ORIGIN written by SHAMIK DASGUPTA and published by YALI DREAM CREATIONS. This book was released on with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is RAKSHAK? Rakshak is a vigilante sans superpowers: yes there are quite a few of them, the biggest one being Batman, followed by Punisher, Daredevil, Kickass and others. The uniqueness of Rakshak as a vigilante comes from the fact that he is an ex-Indian army marine commando or MARCO, equivalent to US Navy Seals. Having lost a limb serving his country, and having seen the worst in humanity, wounded both in body and soul, he wants nothing but to settle down with his family, i.e sister, brother-in-law (who happens to be a white American) and his teenage niece, a comic book nut. Like most vigilantes, his journey towards exacting justice is rooted in a personal tragedy, akin to the great violent tragedy of the Nirbhaya Rape case in Delhi which shook the world. This tragedy drives him to the edge and finally he decides to take law in his own hands, partially because of the guilt of not being able to save his sister and brother-in-law and mostly because he wants to rekindle hope and motivation for his orphaned niece. Captain Aditya Shergill, inspired from comic book superheroes like Batman, decides to don the mantle of Rakshak, the Protector. The uniqueness of the story is the ground reality which it is based on: what if a normal human being, working within the boundaries of a code of no killing, without the backing of billions of dollars, decides to take the law in his hands as a masked vigilante? How will the world react? What real life challenges will he face in his sojourn against injustice and crime? Rakshak is a dark, cerebral, yet elevating tale of one man who decided to stand up and say ‘No’. Issue synopsis Retired Captain Aditya Shegill returns home in Delhi after his final mission in Kashmir which claimed a heavy price both on his soul and body. Reduced to being less of a man which he formerly had been, he finds solace, joy and love in company of his prodigal sister Trisha, her American husband Ronald and their teenage daughter Saina. However, happiness is something which is always fleeting away from our war hero as a horrible incident shatters his family. Aditya breaks down further only to gather himself up and retaliate. If the system or society cannot protect the weak and defenseless, then it is up to him to take up the responsibility; to become a protector, a Rakshak.

Book excerpt: India 2023, the country has made phenomenal progress both in economics and technology. A manned mission to Mars has been sent by ISRO, the Union of India has become part of G10 summit and has established an economy almost parallel to China, but on the other hand, there is the dark side of our country as well. Distant rural villages still live in the medieval customs of casteism, superstition, and hegemony of the rich and highborn. A young doctor Gautham Subramanian and his wife and daughter while traveling from Nagapattinam to Chennai in his car experience a breakdown beside a deserted village while availing a detour from the highway. Keeping his family in the comparative safety of his expensive SUV he walks more than four miles in the heavy rain to reach the nearest village for help. Exhausted and distressed he is appalled to find out that no one is willing to help him, they say Gautham doomed his family because he left them beside the abandoned and haunted village of Kattiyal where bloodthirsty ghosts roam around. The village was destroyed years ago in 2004 during the great tsunami, but a horrid curse remains. Gautham cannot believe he is hearing such superstitious nonsense in the year 2023. However he finally finds unlikely assistance in form of three elderly men – Shakthivel Thevar, the village headman, Rajah the burly local mechanic/blacksmith and Peter the village drunk and bar owner. Both Rajah and Shakthi have their personal agendas to help Gautham because they both lost their children to the horrors of Kattiyal and would not let Gautham share their fate. The three old friends and Gautham venture out in the torrential dark to Kattiyal and faces a dread which is not supernatural but real flesh and blood, the result of past sins committed by Shakthivel’s own family which has now sworn vengeance on all civilization. Can the trio of old men and Gautham find his wife and child? Will they survive that night in the village?

Download or read book Comic Book Movies written by Blair Davis and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic Book Movies explores how this genre serves as a source for modern-day myths, sometimes even incorporating ancient mythic figures like Thor and Wonder Woman’s Amazons, while engaging with the questions that haunt a post-9/11 world: How do we define heroism and morality today? How far are we willing to go when fighting terror? How can we resist a dystopian state? Film scholar Blair Davis also considers how the genre’s visual style is equally important as its weighty themes, and he details how advances in digital effects have allowed filmmakers to incorporate elements of comic book art in innovative ways. As he reveals, comic book movies have inspired just as many innovations to Hollywood’s business model, with film franchises and transmedia storytelling helping to ensure that the genre will continue its reign over popular culture for years to come.

Book excerpt: An enormously satisfying, exciting and enriching book, Vikram Chandra's novel draws the reader deep into the lives of detective Sartaj Singh and Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. Sartaj, the only Sikh inspector in the whole of Mumbai, is used to being identified by his turban, beard and the sharp cut of his trousers. But 'the silky Sikh' is now past forty, his marriage is over and his career prospects are on the slide. When Sartaj gets an anonymous tip off as to the secret hideout of the legendary boss of the G-company, he's determined that he'll be the one to collect the prize. This is a sprawling, epic novel of friendships and betrayals, of terrible violence, of an astonishing modern city and its underworld. Drawing on the best of Victorian fiction, mystery novels, Bollywood movies and Vikram Chandra's years of first hand research on the streets of Mumbai, this novel reads like a potboiling page-turner but resonates with the intelligence and emotional depth of the best of literature.
