Book excerpt: Fifty-eight-year-old Dean Floogleman, a retired burned-out engineer who had abandoned his dreams long ago, returns to the place that he was most happy, the beach. He hopes to reboot his life, but instead he gets much more than he bargains for. Raising The Oblivity is a piece of modern-day fiction about pulling up stakes and moving to Ocracoke, a barrier island along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There Dean encounters three old salts, sea captain Bob Hansen, retired professor Cleaton Beckley, and retired reverend Hal Wriggley who constitute the crew of the schooner The Oblivity. The schooner is modified to resemble a pirate ship and provides sailing excursions for handicapped children and their parents. When Dean arrives in Ocracoke, The Oblivity is partially sunk in the island's lagoon due to a previous storm. The three old salts enlist Dean to help raise and restore her. At the same time, Dean meets and falls in love with a lovely and spunky real estate agent, Natalie Rochelle, who knows the three old salts well for years. These five people are thrown together to restore the beloved schooner and unknowingly find themselves being restored from the suffering of the events of their own lives. As these people work together to restore the schooner, they confront personal challenges and obstacles to find hope, healing, and redemption. The literary genre is romantic comedy. Each of these people has a story to tell, which is told with humor, adventure, and romance.

Safe and sound inside a government bunker, Arthur is proud to be just another drone. But for an ambitious man (and excellent typist) such as Arthur, a promotion to supervisor is just around the corner. But his world is flipped when the brass makes him a census-taker instead. His task: to head out into the irradiated streets armed with paperwork and red tape. Assigned to him is a drug-addicted bodyguard, Rabia Duke, who could care less if they survive. The wastes bring much to fear. But even above radiation, roving gangs, and starvation, what the world should fear the most remains bureaucracy. A happy bureaucracy. Brazil by way of Mad Max, M.P. A secret military base was built around the crash site to study both Moss and the dangerous technology it brought to Earth. The day Matt Salem joins her security team, Dak’s whole world changes. Download or read book Obiter Dicta written by Erick Verran and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stitched together over five years of journaling, Obiter Dicta is a commonplace book of freewheeling explorations representing the transcription of a dozen notebooks, since painstakingly reimagined for publication. Organized after Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought--gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic--interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran's approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Interlarded with extracts of Ludwig Wittgenstein but also Wallace Stevens, Cormac McCarthy as well as Roland Barthes, this cache of incidental remarks eschews what's granular for the biggest picture available, leaving below the hyper-specialized fields of academia for a bird's-eye view of their crop circles. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.

Meanwhile Perry Dawsey—a hulking former football star now resigned to life as a cubicle-bound desk jockey—awakens one morning to find several mysterious welts growing on his body. Book Synopsis The Misenchanted Sword by : Lawrence Watt-Evans
Download or read book The Misenchanted Sword written by Lawrence Watt-Evans and published by Wildside Press. This book was released on 2024-06-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old wizard wasn't exactly happy with Valder, who'd led his enemy to his hut. Now hut and magical supplies were destroyed. But he'd promised the young scout a magic sword to get him safely back to his own lines -- and a much-enchanted sword Valder would get! The resulting sword gave perfect protection -- sometimes! It could kill any man -- or even half demon. In fact, once drawn, it had to kill before it could be put down or sheathed. Army wizards told Valder that the sword would keep him alive until he'd drawn it 100 times; then it would kill him! It wouldn't prevent his being wounded, maimed or cut to pieces, but it wouldn't let him die. If his new job as Chief Assassin for the army didn't make him use up the spell, he'd be practically immortal. Not bad, it seemed. There had to be a catch somewhere. There was -- and it was a lulu!
