Book excerpt: An electric collection of new short stories from the inimitable, bestselling writer of Talk to Me and Outside Looking In In the title story of Walk Between the Raindrops, a woman sits down next to a man at a bar and claims she has ESP. In “Thirteen Days,” passengers on a cruise line are quarantined, to horrifying and hilarious effect. And “Hyena” begins simply: “That was the day the hyena came for him, and never mind that there were no hyenas in the South of France, and especially not in Pont-Saint-Esprit—it was there and it came for him.” A virtuoso of the short form, T.C. Boyle returns with an inventive, uproarious, and masterfully told collection of short stories characterized by biting satire, resonant wit, and a boundless, irrepressible imagination.

Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Getting to the heart of our hassled and over-scheduled existence, Christine Louise Hohlbaum cheerfully investigates 101 ways to increase our quality of life and productivity by reevaluating how we perceive and use time. Everyone has their own personal bank account of time, and while we cannot control time itself, we can manage the activities with which we fill the time we have available to us. The Power of Slow gives readers practical, concise directions to change the relationship they have with time and debunks the myths of multitasking, speed, and urgency as the only ways to efficiency. Tips include: · When working on a project on your computer, close all the windows, with the exception of the one you need to do your job. · Learn to say no in a polite and constructive way to favors, invitations, and requests. · Manage your own expectations, as well as those of others, by clearly stating what is possible in the time frame given. · Declare gadget-free zones (both geographical and temporal) to really enjoy your leisure time. · Know when your plate is full. · Make commitments to difficult tasks in five-minute increments and gradually increase the increments. · Save your most favorite or the easiest tasks for last to avoid procrastination. The Power of Slow will help readers identify areas in need of improvement and show them how to become more efficient and less frazzled at work and at home---and live a better, more balanced life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There shall be showers of blessings. (Ezekiel 34:26)The goodness, kindness, and blessings of God did not "start" when we repented of our sins and came to Christ-because it was the goodness and mercy of God that "led us" to repentance.Romans 2:4 says that we did not know that it was the goodness and forbearance of God that leads us to repentance. This is due to the fact that before our conversion, our "spiritual birth," or our born-again experience, we were blind to spiritual things-even the benevolent intervention of God in our lives.Remember, Jesus said in St. John 3:3,Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.Before we received Christ and became born again, we were spiritually blind. Saint John 1:12-13 says,But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.Therefore, after we are born again and are alive unto God, we are able to see and recognize all the goodness and mercy of God in our lives. When we look back over our lives with our new "spiritual perception," we see the goodness and forbearance of God that tenderly guided us to our salvation.Often the Holy Spirit will take us on a retrospective journey into our past and illuminate various times and situations that as born-again children, we are now able to see and identify as the gracious hand of our Heavenly Father at work in our lives. He was working in our lives long before we ever came to truly know Him or appreciate the goodness and mercy that was granted to us.However, when we do take the time and look back through the years with the eyes of our understanding being opened by our new birth in Christ, we begin to realize the blessings are more than we are able to count. It's like trying to count raindrops during a springtime shower. Of course, we know that it would be impossible to count each one. But whenever we recognize any of the providential blessings of God, and testify of his goodness and his mighty acts, we are giving praise to his name. Since there are so many of them and they never cease, then our praises of God would be continuous. This is why the palmist said,I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (Psalm 34:1)Also,I will shew forth all thy marvelous works. (Psalm 9:1)AndO magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. (Psalm 34:3)The greatest form of praise is to describe what our God is able to do, has done, and is still doing-even in our times. He is able to do "exceeding, abundantly above all that we ask of think, according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).It is my prayer that every believer will be more inspired to look through the clear prism of spiritual discernment and review their lives-before and after coming to Christ-and show forth all his marvelous works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era before big money arrived, Ian Redford, the son of a Perthshire farmer, was stigmatised as football's rich kid. But, in reality, there was no silver spoon. And at an early age, when it was discovered that Redford was completely deaf in one ear, he was advised not to play contact sport of any kind. But this did not deter him from pursuing his dream of being a professional footballer. At the age of 16, Ian Redford's career took off when he made his debut for Dundee FC and at the age of 19 he broke the Scottish transfer record when he signed for Glasgow Rangers for GBP 210,000. After nearly six years in Glasgow, Redford returned east to play for Dundee United under the notorious Jim McLean, and his career reached new and unexpected heights. Football has been a key part of Ian Redford's life but behind the success and the goals, his family has been touched by tragedy. When Ian was seven years old, his baby brother contracted leukemia and his death five years later devastated Ian's family. It was an event the family would never recover from but it also gave the young Ian Redford the motivation to succeed which he channelled into his football. It was the start of his own journey which gave him challenges and opportunities he could never have dreamt of. Insightful, moving and entertaining, Ian Redford's autobiography is a fascinating read throughout as his journey takes him from rural Perthshire to the biggest football stages and on to, amongst other things, a spell as a FIFA registered players' agent and brief career as a businessman in Eastern Europe with Sergei Baltacha as they discovered how not to deal with the local Russian mafia.
