Book excerpt: Damon and his girlfriend Amy have had enough of Los Angeles. Fitful and tired and dreaming of a simpler life, they leave the city to go work on a community farm. But they've scarcely arrived when their vague hopes start to come unraveled: What are they really doing here? Who are their friends? Are they truly testing themselves, or are they just chasing a fantasy that will never be fulfilled? By degrees, they realize that their dreams are not the same. For Damon, a career in the field of branding unfolds almost effortlessly, while for Amy, the menial labor of the farm leads to a satisfying but difficult new path. As the rift deepens, they are forced to evaluate fundamental questions of identity and fate, ambition and betrayal, compromise and lust. This novel is a fresh, searching story about the love of work and the work of love, and the life destinies that we sadly only recognize in retrospect.

Download or read book Dragon Haven written by Robin Hobb and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Dragon Keeper returns with a second enthralling tale of dragons and humans, adventure and discovery, love and freedom Centuries had passed since dragons last roamed the war-torn world of the Rain Wild River. But as peace once again settled upon the land, a lost generation of sea serpents—ancient, half-starved, and weary—returned to cocoon, certain that they would be reborn as the beautiful and powerful dragons of legend. But their arduous journey exacted a heavy toll, and the proud serpents emerged as sickly, half-formed beasts, unable to fly or hunt . . . or thrive. For years now they have been trapped on a swampy riverbank between forest and river, hungry and barely alive, reliant on humans to provide for them. With their survival at stake, fifteen dragons—among them the wise golden Mercor, the haughty and dazzling silver-blue queen Sintara, and the delicate copper beauty Relpda—have set off on a dangerous trek into the unknown, up the Rain Wild River, in hopes of rediscovering the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra, the lost haven for dragons and Elderlings alike. The dragons are accompanied by a disparate group of human keepers, rejects from Rain Wild society. They, too, yearn to find Kelsingra and create a home of their own, one in which they may make their own rules and decide their own fate. But is Kelsingra real or merely a fragment of a glorified past buried deep in the dragons' shared memories? No map exists to guide them, and the noble creatures find their ancient recollections of little use in a land changed by generations of flooding and seismic chaos. As the dragons, the humans—including the strong and defiant Rain Wild girl Thymara; the wealthy dragon scholar and Trader's wife, Alise; and her companion, the urbane Sedric—and their magical supply barge, captained by the gruff Leftrin, forge their way ever deeper into uncharted wilderness, human and beast alike discover they are changing in mysterious and dangerous ways. While the bonds between them solidify, starvation, flashfloods, and predators will imperil them all. But dragons and humans soon learn that the most savage threats come from within their own company . . . and not all of them may survive. Returning to the territory of her beloved Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies, New York Times bestselling author Robin Hobb creates a lush and ultimately triumphant tale set in an imaginative world of magic and wonder as compelling and emotionally resonant as our own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book 5 in this exciting new world. If you like dragons and egotistical, super-sexy demigods, then this is the series for you.BoltI am the son of a god. Not just any god, but the mighty Zeus. I take after my father in many ways. I am powerful and astute. I can be ruthless when I need to be. You have to be driven and relentless when you run an empire. When thousands of people rely on you for their livelihoods. I'm still all of those things, but since meeting her, I'm broken. A shadow of the man I used to be. I'm angry. Impossible to be around, but I can't seem to get over it...I can't get over her.I'm in love with a ghost. Someone I don't even know. This woman got her claws into me. Wove a magic spell so tightly around me that I am unable to break free. I wish I could hate her. I can't. Not when my body and soul yearn for her. I know it isn't real, and yet I can't help the way I feel. There is no outlet for all of these emotions because the object of my hate, my affection, my love - real or imagined - is dead. Gone! I heard that doppelgangers exist. I never really believed it until Ashley Shaw walked through my door.AshleyIt's wrong to lie.My parents taught me better than that.I realize this, but I'm desperate. I need this job. How hard can it be to work as a Personal Assistant? I can run errands and take calls. I can send an email and type up a document...slowly...using two fingers. Still, I can do it. So what if I fibbed a little on my resume? It won't take me long to get the hang of things, that is if I actually make it through the interview. I'm sure I'll manage. People generally like me. I'm nice. Polite. I try. When I see him. The man I would sell my soul for...be a PA for. I almost run away. The terms 'dark, brooding, dangerous, and sexy' are accurate, and yet they have nothing on him. He's more...he's also angry, arrogant, tortured...and beautiful. Up until today, I didn't realize a man could be beautiful. Particularly one so masculine. Yet, here he is. I'm so nervous I completely hash the interview. It's for the best because harboring sexual fantasies about your boss is not a good idea. I'm shocked when I get the job. I remember thinking that there had to be a catch...and I was right. There is!No cheating! Contains hot alpha males and therefore strong sexual themes/language.

From the rice fields of Vietnam to a cell on America's shores, one woman loses everything yet discovers she has gained it all.
Download or read book Guan Yu written by Barend J. ter Haar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guan Yu was a minor general in the early third century CE, who supported one of numerous claimants to the throne. He was captured and executed by enemy forces in 219. He eventually became one the most popular and influential deities of imperial China under the name Lord Guan or Emperor Guan, of the same importance as the Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin. This is a study of his cult, but also of the tremendous power of oral culture in a world where writing became increasingly important. In this study, we follow the rise of the deity through his earliest stage as a hungry ghost, his subsequent adoption by a prominent Buddhist monastery during the Tang (617-907) as its miraculous supporter, and his recruitment by Daoist ritual specialists during the Song dynasty (960-1276) as an exorcist general. He was subsequently known as a rain god, a protector against demons and barbarians, and, eventually, a moral paragon and almost messianic saviour. Throughout his divine life, the physical prowess of the deity, more specifically Lord Guan's ability to use violent action for doing good, remained an essential dimension of his image. Most research ascribes a decisive role in the rise of his cult to the literary traditions of the Three Kingdoms, best known from the famous novel by this name. This book argues that the cult arose from oral culture and spread first and foremost as an oral practice.
