This book was released on 1988 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, his final work, Rodman W. Paul explores the settlement of the American West in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Lured by stories of open spaces, fertile farming, & grazing lands & by the attraction of gold & silver, people from many nations traveled westward by the thousands. Early migrants rode in stagecoaches & Conestoga wagons; their successors, on the transcontinental railroads, which linked western cities with their eastern counterparts. This comprehensive history describes not only population movement & mining development but also banking, farming, ranching, & other economic ventures. In a new foreword, Martin Ridge places Paul's history in the context of contemporary scholarship. "Paul has given us an authoritative, indeed a brilliant, history of the Far West & the Great Plains as he saw it, through the lens of miners, businessmen, & immigrants." - JOURNAL OF AMERICAN HISTORY. Rodman W. Paul was Professor of History at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena & the foremost historian of mining in the West. Among his many books are CALIFORNIA GOLD, MINING FRONTIERS OF THE FAR WEST, 1848-1880, & THE FRONTIER & THE AMERICAN WEST. Martin Ridge, who originally saw Paul's work through the press, is also a Professor of History at the California Institute of Technology & the author of WESTWARD EXPANSION: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN FRONTIER.

This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Communication With the Pacific, With an Account of the Central Pacific Railroad of California: The Character of the Work, Its Progress, Resources Earnings and Future Prospects, and the Advantage of Its First Mortgage Bonds The first practical step towards building a railroad across the Continent, was the introduction of a bill into the United States Senate by Colonel Ben ton, in February, 1848, providing for the location and construction of a Cen tral National Road from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean - to be an iron railway where practicable - and providing for the application of the larger portion of the proceeds of sales of public lands to defray the expense. The terms of the proposal show that a very inadequate idea of the future greatness of the Far West was then entertained, but even this project received no active support. At that time there were no railroads west of the Missis sippi-none, in fact, had reached it from the east - and the Erie Railroad was not completed. In 1850, under the patronage of the State of Missouri, a company was organized, and a railroad projected from St. Louis along the south bank of the Missouri to the western boundary of the State. The work progressed but slowly after the State ceased to advance the moneyed aid, and, in 1855, had reached Jefferson City, the capital of the State, about mid. Way across it. In 1860, the outbreak of the War found it halted at Sedalia, about sixty-five miles from the Kansas line. Download or read book Sunset Limited written by Richard J. Orsi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only major U.S. railroad to be operated by westerners and the only railroad built from west to east, the Southern Pacific acquired a unique history and character. It also acquired a reputation, especially in California, as a railroad that people loved to hate. This magisterial history tells the full story of the Southern Pacific for the first time, shattering myths about the company that have prevailed to this day. A landmark account, Sunset Limited explores the railroad's development and influence—especially as it affected land settlement, agriculture, water policy, and the environment—and offers a new perspective on the tremendous, often surprising, role the company played in shaping the American West. Based on his unprecedented and extensive research into the company's historical archives, Richard Orsi finds that, contrary to conventional understanding, the Southern Pacific Company identified its corporate well-being with population growth and social and economic development in the railroad's hinterland. As he traces the complex and shifting intersections between corporate and public interest, Orsi documents the railroad's little-known promotion of land distribution, small-scale farming, scientific agriculture, and less wasteful environmental practices and policies—including water conservation and wilderness and recreational parklands preservation. Meticulously researched, lucidly written, and judiciously balanced, Sunset Limited opens a new window onto the American West in a crucial phase of its development and will forever change our perceptions of one of the largest and most important western corporations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
