Work was at once begun in other dry-goods establishments; later on a secretary or missionary was employed, and in 1849 a library and reading room was opened. In 1851, W. E. Shipton became the paid secretary of the Association and the work at once assumed a broader scope and more aggressive spirit. One of his early acts was the distribution of evangelistic and Association literature during the great indus trial exposition held in London in 1851, and in' this way the work of the Association became known in other lands. Book Synopsis Records of the New England Association, Railway Superintendents by :
Download or read book Records of the New England Association, Railway Superintendents written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the New England Association, Railway Superintendents: Organized in Boston, Massachusetts, April 5, 1848, Dissolved October 1, 1857 Washington, D. C., April, 1910. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Eastern Railroad Association held March 10, 1910, attention was called to a manuscript book containing the original records of the "New England Association of Railway Superintendents," organized April 5, 1848, and dissolved October 1, 1857, which appears to have been the first railway association formed in this country having among its objects the protection of its members from unjust claims for infringement of patents. The book has been in the possession of the Secretary of the Eastern Railroad Association since early in 1875, when he obtained it directly from the widow of the Secretary who kept the records. It is therefore authentic, and contains much interesting information in connection with early railway matters, together with the names and signatures in facsimile of some of the leading pioneers in the railway business in this country. Believing that the preservation in permanent form, and the possession of copies of this book would be appreciated, the Committee ordered a limited number of copies to be printed in pamphlet form for the use of the Association. With the exception of the addition of indexes to facilitate the finding of names, or subject matter, the contents of the record book are herewith reproduced in original form.
