Book excerpt: Rags to Riches series: Part One Remove the Empty Spaces Finding a solution for his boss brings Ion to the point of having his deepest fantasies come true. Being a mailroom clerk is a stepping stone for Ion Vasile. He doesn't plan on working in the basement at Bellamy International forever. Ion spends a lot of his time fantasizing about Adrien Bellamy, CEO and President of the company. He's sure Adrien doesn't know he exists. Adrien Bellamy does know Ion exists. Even with all his money and power, Adrien isn't sure Ion would want to go out with him. So he keeps his distance from the gorgeous mail clerk. After Ion finds a solution to a troubling acquisition, Adrien takes a chance and asks him out. Their attraction runs red-hot, and a serious relationship becomes a possibility. But first they have to deal with their families and the differences pointed out between them. Adrien must find a way to convince Ion his lack of money and name doesn't mean anything because Adrien loves him no matter what. Close the Distance Being in love isn't always roses and sunshine. Ion Vasile and Adrien Bellamy start dating and fall in love quickly. As their relationship grows stronger, Ion discovers the fragility of his family ties. As his mother turns against him and his brother seems to be supporting her, Ion begins to lean more and more on Adrien. Adrien wants nothing more than to be strong for Ion and share his own family with him. Yet he's afraid they're moving too fast. He doesn't want to scare the most marvellous man he's ever met away. When tragedy strikes, they both realise life is too short to let fear rule their choices. Following His Footsteps Being just like his father is what scares Winston the most. Winston Tennant came to New York to work. After burying himself in his job for the several years, he's afraid he's becoming like his father. Cold and indifferent, Winston's father only wanted his son as a way to continue the family line. When Winston came out, he was disowned. His best friends do their best to keep him from his father's fate. And when Winston meets Patrick Gaverson, he thinks he just might have found the man who can take his mind off his work. Patrick Gaverson never imagined that Winston Tennant, head of the London office of Bellamy International, would be interested in a mere personal assistant like him. Yet after a not so subtle set-up by his boss and his best friend, Patrick finds himself on a date with Winston. He discovers that Winston is a lot more down to earth than Patrick thought. Falling in love so quickly shouldn't be easy, but Patrick's willing to take a chance that it will last more than a week.

Walking in the Rain Sometimes fate brings us the right person to make our world perfect. Dayton VanHooren is a United States senator who doesn't really like his job. He's been too busy to date, much less pick anyone up for sex. Being openly gay means he doesn't have to worry about scandal, but he's looking for something more than a good time. Mickey O'Leary can barely think, he's so exhausted. Working three jobs to help pay his brother's hospital bills keeps him going and helps him forget about how lonely he is. Mickey would like to meet a nice guy who won't run at the first hint of Mickey's problems. A wedding reception and a thunderstorm are catalysts to bring these two men together. What can they do when they discover the perfect man for them but fall in love? Barefoot Dancing A moment in time can be the most pivotal one in our lives. Kendall VanHooren is happy with his life. He works as a corporate lawyer in his father's firm and does as he wishes on the weekends. He used to be a partier, but as he's matured, he's settled down and figured out that sometimes quiet is a good thing. George Bowie is working a minimum wage job, which is barely keeping him off the streets most days. He lost his job in the banking crisis and has learned the hard way that pride has no place when it comes to survival. Dancing barefoot on the beach might seem an odd thing to do, but it brings two men together at just the right moment for their worlds to collide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-chapter novel The Three Sui Quash the Demons’ Revolt is traditionally attributed to Luo Guanzhong (d. after 1364?), the alleged author of two of China’s most famous and beloved works of fiction, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Water Margin. The Three Sui tells the story of the uprising of adherents of the Maitreya Buddha led by Wang Ze in 1047–1048. Wang Ze was eventually executed and all future heterodox activity outlawed. Paradoxically, The Three Sui treats the rebellion as an occasion for slapstick, baggy-pants humor in which facts are distorted and wildly mixed with fiction. Wang Ze's real-life lieutenants show up as a comical peddler and a mysterious Daoist priest. A celebrated warrior takes part in the rebellion despite having died seventeen years earlier. Although the novel is divided into chapters and otherwise follows the traditional format for such extended narratives, a careful examination reveals The Three Sui is an arrangement of self-contained vernacular stories. No story bears an intrinsic relationship to any other story. And because the integrity of the various stories has been so remarkably preserved, The Three Sui is a vernacular novel in which the vernacular story reigns supreme. Although the Wang Ze rebellion took place during the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), ultimately The Three Sui is the story of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) in Song masquerade. It calls attention to the social unrest, even anarchy, caused by the rising power and influence of movements like The White Lotus Society and warns of the Ming’s downfall unless such groups are contained. In this, the novel proved to be a prescient voice: The Ming collapsed as the result of a central authority weakened by mass sectarian uprisings. The Three Sui has been little known and sadly overlooked by scholars of Chinese literature and history. Now this vibrant translation and insightful interpretive essay make this early example of Chinese vernacular fiction available to a broad audience interested in comparative literature and fiction.

Book excerpt: 1st PLACE WINNER, C.I.B.A. HEMINGWAY AWARD BEST 1st BOOK, INTERNATIONAL LATINO BOOK AWARDS "An inherently compelling read from start to finish that deftly combines the elements of espionage and romance." —MBR Bookwatch "The would make a great, great film." On the Bookshelf with Doc Kirby, WTBF "Absolutely enthralling and entertaining. Kept me engaged to the very end." —Bare Books Podcast "A wonderfully rendered story." —Denton Record-Chronicle "The politics and historical events are balanced and accurate, and the humanity crosses borders." —Onia Fox, Author of Listless in Turkey In late 1950's Cuba, the island's allure as an elite global paradise was cloaked by a revolution that brought down its rich and powerful. When a poor native farm boy named Victor Gomez is suddenly orphaned and adopted by one of the most influential families in his hometown, he meets and falls for Sarita Rodriguez—a supermodel and media empire heiress—just before Fidel Castro overthrows President Fulgencio Batista and takes control of the island. After Castro raids Victor's new family's estate and imprisons his father, Victor narrowly escapes and flees to the US where he accepts an unconventional, deadly deal as a spy to save his country. Still just a teen, Victor finds himself in a cycle of betrayal—struggling to find truth and purpose, while torn between protecting his now powerless parents, finding his disbanded biological siblings, and secretly pursuing Sarita as she rises to international fame from New York. Based on the true story of the author's family, Isla Vulnerable weaves a captivating tale of love, sacrifice, and human resilience in the face of extraordinary historical events—including the Cold War, the Cuban missile crisis, the CIA's covert operations in foreign affairs, Operation Mongoose, and the assassination of JFK. A dynamic cast of real-life-inspired characters, meticulous attention to historical detail, edge-of-your-seat spy scenes, and a love story that transcends social classes compose an ideologically-unbiased, heartwarming, and cinematic journey in this author's first published book.
