Book excerpt: In topological measure theory, Radon measures are the most important objects. In the context of locally compact spaces, there are two equivalent canonical definitions. As a set function, a Radon measure is an inner compact regular Borel measure, finite on compact sets. As a functional, it is simply a positive linear form, defined on the vector lattice of continuous real-valued functions with compact support. During the last few decades, in particular because of the developments of modem probability theory and mathematical physics, attention has been focussed on measures on general topological spaces which are no longer locally compact, e.g. spaces of continuous functions or Schwartz distributions. For a Radon measure on an arbitrary Hausdorff space, essentially three equivalent definitions have been proposed: As a set function, it was defined by L. Schwartz as an inner compact regular Borel measure which is locally bounded. G. Choquet considered it as a strongly additive right continuous content on the lattice of compact subsets. Following P.A. Meyer, N. Bourbaki defined a Radon measure as a locally uniformly bounded family of compatible positive linear forms, each defined on the vector lattice of continuous functions on some compact subset.

Book excerpt: Young measures are now a widely used tool in the Calculus of Variations, in Control Theory, in Probability Theory and other fields. They are known under different names such as "relaxed controls", "fuzzy random variables" and many other names. This monograph provides a unified presentation of the theory, along with new results and applications in various fields. It can serve as a reference on the subject. Young measures are presented in a general setting which includes finite and for the first time infinite dimensional spaces: the fields of applications of Young measures (Control Theory, Calculus of Variations, Probability Theory...) are often concerned with problems in infinite dimensional settings. The theory of Young measures is now well understood in a finite dimensional setting, but open problems remain in the infinite dimensional case. We provide several new results in the general frame, which are new even in the finite dimensional setting, such as characterizations of convergence in measure of Young measures (Chapter 3) and compactness criteria (Chapter 4).These results are established under a different form (and with fewer details and developments) in recent papers by the same authors. We also provide new applications to Visintin and Reshetnyak type theorems (Chapters 6 and 8), existence of solutions to differential inclusions (Chapter 7), dynamical programming (Chapter 8) and the Central Limit Theorem in locally convex spaces (Chapter 9).

This material was for many years the first half of a book in progress on information and ergodic theory. The intent was and is to provide a reasonably self-contained advanced treatment of measure theory, prob ability theory, and the theory of discrete time random processes with an emphasis on general alphabets and on ergodic and stationary properties of random processes that might be neither ergodic nor stationary. The intended audience was mathematically inc1ined engineering graduate students and visiting scholars who had not had formal courses in measure theoretic probability . Much of the material is familiar stuff for mathematicians, but many of the topics and results have not previously appeared in books. The original project grew too large and the first part contained much that would likely bore mathematicians and dis courage them from the second part. Hence I finally followed the suggestion to separate the material and split the project in two. The original justification for the present manuscript was the pragmatic one that it would be a shame to waste all the effort thus far expended. A more idealistic motivation was that the presentation bad merit as filling a unique, albeit smaIl, hole in the literature.
