Book excerpt: Recent explosive growth in the number of wireless devices and demand for portable information content has led to the need for modern wireless systems with higher bandwidth to support faster data rates. It is necessary to move to higher frequency bands to increase the channel capacity. It is important to develop new methods to increase channel capacity for applications, including short range chip-to-chip wireless links. One approach to increasing capacity that has been explored in optics and at radio frequency (RF) is mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) of multiple orthogonal electromagnetic beams. This dissertation focuses on developing radio-frequency communication using higher order modes of Gaussian beams, specifically Hermite-Gaussian (HG) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG). First, a physical phase plate was designed and fabricated to transform plane waves to Hermite-Gaussian beams. The phase plate is designed for an HG11 mode, working at E-band from 71 to 76 GHz. Second, an HG11 beam is formed using four inset-fed microstrip patch elements arranged with a microstrip corporate feeding network at the same frequency. The physical phase plate and the patch antenna array were both simulated using ANSYS HFSS. Radiation pattern measurements were taken on an NSI 700S-360 spherical near-field system at from 71 to 76 GHz with an Agilent vector network analyzer (VNA). Third, LG beams were generated with spiral phase plates (SPP) from 71 to 76 GHz. Then a dual-channel E-band communication link using commercial impulse radios was demonstrated with two LG beams over 2 meters range. LG OAM beams at E-band were also generated by a circular patch array and then a wireless communication link was built using the array to demonstrate twisting a wave with patches and untwisting it with a SPP. Also included is a demonstration of horn antennas manufactured by 3D printing with low cost metallic paint for X-band and Ka-band frequencies. This work advances wireless communication using advanced hardware techniques.

The book features the UCA-based RF point-to-point OAM communication system, the UCA-based RF point-to-multipoint OAM wireless backhaul network, the HCCL structure for long-distance OAM transmissions, and the UCA-based joint OAM RadCom scheme. For the UCA-based RF point-to-point OAM communication system, a 2-D ESPRIT-based distance and AoA estimation method is first introduced, followed by an OAM reception scheme including the hybrid mechanical and electronic beam steering with the estimated AoA and the amplitude detection with the estimated distance. The proposed RF OAM communication scheme is extended to the RF OAM-MIMO system equipped with UCCAs. For the UCA-based RF point-to-multipoint OAM wireless backhaul network, an OAM-based multi-user distance and AoA estimation method is introduced, followed by a multi-user OAM preprocessing scheme. At last, the proposed methods are extended to the downlink multi-user OAM-MIMO wireless backhaul system equipped with UCCAs. Moreover, a novel HCCL structure is introduced to realize long-distance OAM transmission. For the UCA-based joint OAM RadCom scheme, an OAM-based 3-D super-resolution position estimation and rotation velocity detection method is introduced, and then the PCRB of the OAM-based estimates and the transmission rate of the integrated system are derived and analyzed. To achieve the best performance trade-off, the transmitted integrated OAM beams is optimized by means of an exhaustive search method. Finally, this book discusses future research directions to inspire further investigation in the field of RF OAM communications from different perspectives.

Book excerpt: The existence of Gaussian beam solution to hyperbolic PDEs has been known to the pure mathematics community since sometime in the 1960s [3]. It enjoys popularity afterwards due to its ability to resolve the caustics problem and its efficiency [49, 28, 31]. In this thesis, we will focus on the extension of the multi-scale Gaussian beam method and its application to seismic wave modeling and inversion. In the first part of thesis, we discuss the application of the multi-scale Gaussian beam method to the inverse problem. A new multi-scale Gaussian beam method is introduced for carrying out true-amplitude prestack migration of acoustic waves. After applying the Born approximation, the migration process is considered as shooting two beams simultaneously from the subsurface point which we want to image. The Multi-scale Gaussian Wavepacket transform provides an efficient and accurate way for both decomposing the perturbation field and initializing Gaussian beam solution. Moreover, we can prescribe both the region of imaging and the range of dipping angles by shooting beams from a subsurface point in the region of imaging. We prove the imaging condition equation rigorously and conduct error analysis. Some numerical approximations are derived to improve the efficiency further. Numerical results in the two-dimensional space demonstrate the performance of the proposed migration algorithm. In the second part of thesis, we propose a new multiscale Gaussian beam method with reinitialization to solve the elastic wave equation in the high frequency regime with different boundary conditions. A novel multiscale transform is proposed to decompose any arbitrary vector-valued function to multiple Gaussian wavepackets with various resolution. After the step of initializing, we derive various rules corresponding to different types of reflection cases. To improve the efficiency and accuracy, we develop a new reinitialization strategy based on the stationary phase approximation method to sharpen each single beam ansatz. This is especially useful and necessary in some reflection cases. Numerical examples with various parameters demonstrate the correctness and robustness of the whole method. There are two boundary conditions considered here, the periodic and the Dirichlet boundary condition. In the end, we show that the convergence rate of the proposed multiscale Gaussian beam method follows the convergence rate of the classical Gaussian beam solution.
