Book excerpt: In the tradition of Robert A. Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress but with a healthy dose of cyberpunk: Radio Freefall is about a plot to take over the Earth by power-mad, sociopathic computer-geek billionaire, Walter Cheeseman. It's up to a strange cast of rock stars and oddballs to stop him. Aqualung, a mysterious blues musician who also has superhuman tech skills, might be the catalyst for the resistance--or he might just be the pawn of artificial intelligences. To thwart the takeover, the orbitals and the moon colonies secede from Earth. And then something like the Singularity happens, but no one is quite sure. This is a novel of cyberpunk and rock and roll, of technology, artificial intelligence, and wild riffs off of Heinlein all mixed into an explosive debut. Matthew Jarpe launches his SF career with a bang! At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: “A thoughtful and powerful page turner.”—People Elvis Cole is just a detective who can't say no, especially to a girl in a terrible fix. And Jennifer Sheridan qualifies: Her fiancé, Mark Thurman, is a decorated LA cop with an elite plainclothes unit, but Jennifer's sure he's in trouble—the kind of serious trouble that only Elvis Cole can help him out of. Five minutes after his new client leaves his office, Elvis and his partner, the enigmatic Joe Pike, are hip-deep in a deadly situation as they plummet into a world of South Central gangs, corrupt cops, and conspiracies of silence. And before the case is through, every copy in the LAPD will be gunning for a pair of escaped armed-and-dangerous killers—Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. “Elvis Cole provides more fun for the reader than any L.A. private eye to come along in years.”—Joseph Wambaugh “Elvis lives, and he's on his way to being crowned the king of detectives.”—Booklist

Book excerpt: Natch has just won his first battle with the Defense and Wellness Council for control of MultiReal technology. But now the Council has unleashed the ruthless cunning of Lieutenant Executive Magan Kai Lee. Lee decides that if Natch's company can't be destroyed from without, it must be destroyed from within. As black code continues to eat away at Natch's sanity, he faces a mutiny from his own apprentices, a legal onslaught from the government, and the return of enemies old and new. In desperation, the entrepreneur turns to some unlikely allies: a radical politician with an agenda of his own, and a childhood enemy to whom he has done a terrible wrong. Natch's struggle will take him from the halls of power in Melbourne to the ruined cities of the diss. Hanging in the balance is the fate of MultiReal, a technology that could end the tyranny of the Council forever—or give the Council the ultimate weapon of oppression. Book 2 in the Jump 225 Series. Praise for Infoquake: “Slick high-finance melodrama and dizzying technical speculation lift Edelman’s SF debut. . . . Bursting with invention and panache, this novel will hook readers for the story’s next installment.” —Publishers Weekly “INFOQUAKE should appeal to just about any SF reader, but if you like Herbert’s Dune or any of Stross’ work, you should really enjoy this book.” —SF Signal Praise for MultiReal: “Edelman brings fresh air to the technological thriller. . . . MultiReal itself is firmly established as one of the most fascinating singularity technologies in years.” —Publishers Weekly “Once you realize that Natch is less Neo than he is Steve Jobs, you’re in for a swell ride.” —Sci-Fi WeeklyPraise for Geosynchron: “This smart, idiosyncratic blend of cyberpunk, libertarian entrepreneurship, and social engineering will, I think, stand as a seminal work of 21st century SF.” —Locus “Takes the series one level higher, beyond mundanity to true sense-of-wonder SF, so it finally plays on the level of the masters of modern SF.” —Fantasy Book Critic At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Book excerpt: In our increasingly interconnected world, personalized and technology-assisted healthcare has become a rising trend. In an ageing society, technology enables new ways to care for and assist the elderly. Falls pose a major risk and cause of injuries for senior citizens. Technology-backed fall prevention thus has the potential to avoid severe injuries and further loss of independence, but requires continuous monitoring of the body posture in order to identify imminent falls. This work presents a system concept for a wearable wireless body area network (WBAN) for posture monitoring. It shows the principal feasibility of posture recognition from ultra-wideband (UWB) signals based on a large and diverse set of measurements. For a promising classifier-feature-combination, this work demonstrates how reliable posture recognition can be achieved with a limited number of body-mounted nodes, and analyzes its robustness towards potential pitfalls. It concludes with a proposal for a system implementation, and outlines its integration with existing and future aspects of personalized healthcare.
