Book excerpt: Improve shareholder value through proactive corporate restructuring practices From a Harvard professor and widely recognized expert in the field comes a cutting edge look at how to use corporate restructuring to improve shareholder value. Radical Restructuring: Strategies to Increase Financial Performance looks at corporate restructuring as a creative tool to proactively improve the business rather than as a reactionary way to avert financial ruin. It was written using the author's extensive and award-winning research on domestic and international restructuring over the past two decades. All businesses must provide value to their shareholders in order to succeed, and that value can be expanded dramatically through the use of smart business strategies. This book examines proactive ways to use corporate restructuring in order to exploit new opportunities, boost financial performance, and increase competitive advantage. Discover how to use restructuring strategies like spin-offs, mergers, bankruptcy, and tort claims to return health to the business Study restructuring theory, particularly as it relates to corporate restructuring Learn how to identify the right restructuring strategies for specific business objectives Read real world examples from companies like Humana, Lucent, Delphi Automotive, Continental Airlines, Scott Paper, Agilent Technologies, and Dupont-Conoco The focus of the book is not on restructuring because of bankruptcy or poor management problems, but rather on restructuring as a business tool to facilitate change and growth in an organization. With real success stories to supplement the theory, this book is ideal for finance professionals, managers, institutional investors, and even students looking to better understand how to utilize restructuring practices to solve today's most pressing business challenges.
Book Synopsis Managing the Aftermath of Radical Corporate Change by : Eliezer Geisler
Download or read book Managing the Aftermath of Radical Corporate Change written by Eliezer Geisler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-09-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radical restructuring of organizations can have momentous effects and not all of them are good. In fact, many are actually bad and may cause serious harm. How management can remedy these ill effects systematically and restore stability to their traumatized organizations is the theme of Dr. Geisler's compelling new book. How do we clean up the mess from poorly conceived, badly implemented, and ultimately unsuccessful restructurings? How can managers, who have been caught up in these changes and who are as disrupted by them as anyone, regain their own equilibrium and help the healing and reconstructive process take hold? Geisler's answers to these questions are essential reading for corporate executives in all types of organizations (public and private both), and for academics and students. Dr. Geisler lists the problems associated with radical change and describes the futility of total corporate transformations in general. In addition, he develops a staged process by which managers can counteract the side effects of radical change programs. By showing that the beneficial effects of radical corporate change are usually transient, Dr. Geisler's process is a key ingredient in any effort designed for the long-term survival of the firm and the preservation of its strategic goals and methods. Thus, not only does Geisler provide a sound, well-reasoned criticism of corporate restructuring, but he offers something that few if any other books can offer: a workable means to cope constructively with the effects of its many failures.

Book Synopsis Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America by : Fernando Fajnzylber
Download or read book Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America written by Fernando Fajnzylber and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent economic history of Latin America no country has yet found the means to combine effectively economic growth with equity. Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America compares the development path of Latin America with that of the East Asian newly industrialized countries (NICs), the United States, and Europe in the 1970s and 1980s to show the national policies and international cooperation necessary to set Latin American countries on the road to healthy economies. Fernando Fajnzylber argues that technological and industrial progress is the driving force of a positive relationship among dynamism, competitiveness, austerity, and equity. Latin America's failure to master this technological progress underlies its economic difficulties. To overcome the inheritance of past mistakes, the author maintains, Latin America must undergo not only macroeconomic stabilization and a reduction of the debt burden, but also a complete transformation of the production structure. The role of the state and the institutional setup need to be modified and new social and sectoral policies devised. Fajnzylber sees this radical restructuring as an unavoidable step if Latin America is ever to achieve a workable balance between growth and equity.

The crisis is of long standing and its signs are widespread. Most proposals for improving management address one element of the crisis at the expense of the others. The principles described by award-winning author Stephen Denning simultaneously inspire high productivity, continuous innovation, deep job satisfaction and client delight. Denning puts forward a fundamentally different approach to management, with seven inter-locking principles of continuous innovation: focusing the entire organization on delighting clients; working in self-organizing teams; operating in client-driven iterations; delivering value to clients with each iteration; fostering radical transparency; nurturing continuous self-improvement and communicating interactively. In sum, the principles comprise a new mental model of management. Book Synopsis Network Algorithmics by : George Varghese
Download or read book Network Algorithmics written by George Varghese and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Network Algorithmics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Designing Fast Networked Devices, Second Edition takes an interdisciplinary approach to applying principles for efficient implementation of network devices, offering solutions to the problem of network implementation bottlenecks. In designing a network device, there are dozens of decisions that affect the speed with which it will perform – sometimes for better, but sometimes for worse. The book provides a complete and coherent methodology for maximizing speed while meeting network design goals. The book is uniquely focused on the seamless integration of data structures, algorithms, operating systems and hardware/software co-designs for high-performance routers/switches and network end systems. Thoroughly updated based on courses taught by the authors over the past decade, the book lays out the bottlenecks most often encountered at four disparate levels of implementation: protocol, OS, hardware and architecture. It then develops fifteen principles key to breaking these bottlenecks, systematically applying them to bottlenecks found in end-nodes, interconnect devices and specialty functions located along the network. Later sections discuss the inherent challenges of modern cloud computing and data center networking. Offers techniques that address common bottlenecks of interconnect devices, including routers, bridges, gateways, endnodes, and Web servers Presents many practical algorithmic concepts that students and readers can work with immediately Revised and updated throughout to discuss the latest developments from authors’ courses, including measurement algorithmics, randomization, regular expression matching, and software-defined networking Includes a new, rich set of homework exercises and exam questions to facilitate classroom use
