Book excerpt: Introduction to nanofluids--their properties, synthesis, characterization, and applications Nanofluids are attracting a great deal of interest with their enormous potential to provide enhanced performance properties, particularly with respect to heat transfer. In response, this text takes you on a complete journey into the science and technology of nanofluids. The authors cover both the chemical and physical methods for synthesizing nanofluids, explaining the techniques for creating a stable suspension of nanoparticles. You get an overview of the existing models and experimental techniques used in studying nanofluids, alongside discussions of the challenges and problems associated with some of these models. Next, the authors set forth and explain the heat transfer applications of nanofluids, including microelectronics, fuel cells, and hybrid-powered engines. You also get an introduction to possible future applications in large-scale cooling and biomedicine. This book is the work of leading pioneers in the field, one of whom holds the first U.S. patent for nanofluids. They have combined their own first-hand knowledge with a thorough review of theliterature. Among the key topics are: * Synthesis of nanofluids, including dispersion techniques and characterization methods * Thermal conductivity and thermo-physical properties * Theoretical models and experimental techniques * Heat transfer applications in microelectronics, fuel cells, and vehicle engines This text is written for researchers in any branch of science and technology, without any prerequisite. It therefore includes some basic information describing conduction, convection, and boiling of nanofluids for those readers who may not have adequate background in these areas. Regardless of your background, you'll learn to develop nanofluids not only as coolants, but also for a host ofnew applications on the horizon.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical model of the radiative contribution to the total heat transfer between a large-particle (greater than 1 mm) gas-fluidized bed and an immersed horizontal tube is discussed. The model is applied to the case of a bubbling bed and the emulsion phase contribution is obtained from a detailed analysis of the first layer of particles in contact with the tube. This approximation is justified by the combined effects of large particle size and relatively short residence time at the heat transfer surface, so that cooling is limited to the first row in contact with the tube. The method involves the use of the coupled convection/transient conduction analysis of Adams [3] with modifications for the relative heat flux and addition of thermal contact resistance between rough surfaces. In the case of the emulsion phase, radiative cooling of the particles is formulated assuming that the bed, tube wall, and particle surfaces are diffuse and gray. Then the net radiation method is applied to an enclosure formed by a gray cylinder surrounding a spherical particle in order to establish the radiative heat flux to the tube wall. The bubble phase radiative heat flux is approximated by assuming the bubble boundary is isothermal and gray. Two models were considered to establish an estimate of lower and upper limits of bubble phase radiative heat transfer to the immersed tube. The first of the foregoing models assumes the gas within the bubble is optically thin and the second model takes gas absorption into account. A computer code has been developed and used to obtain heat transfer to a horizontal tube immersed in a three-dimensional, bubbling, atmospheric pressure fluidized bed. A parametric study of the effects of particle thermal and physical properties on heat transfer to the tube is presented. The numerical results for both total and radiative heat transfer are compared with experimental data reported in the literature as well as those recently obtained by Alavizadeh. The heat transfer coefficients calculated using the model were found to be within the range of experimental results obtained by others. The model is expected to be valid for mean particle diameters greater than 2.00 mm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the practice of chemical engineering has broadened to encompass problems in a range of disciplines, including biology, biochemistry, and nanotechnology, one of the curriculum’s foundations is built upon the subject of transport phenomena. Transport Phenomena Fundamentals, Second Edition provides a unified treatment of heat, mass, and momentum transport based on a balance equation approach. Designed for a two-term course Used in a two-term transport phenomena sequence at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, this text streamlines the approach to how the subject is taught. The first part of the book takes students through the balance equation in the context of diffusive transport, be it momentum, energy, mass, or charge. Each chapter adds a term to the balance equation, highlighting the effects of that addition on the physical behavior of the system and the underlying mathematical description. The second half of the book builds upon the balance equation description of diffusive transport by introducing convective transport terms, focusing on partial rather than ordinary differential equations. The Navier–Stokes and convective transport equations are derived from balance equations in both macroscopic and microscopic forms. Includes examples and problems drawn from Comsol® software The second edition of this text is now enhanced by the use of finite element methods in the form of examples and extended homework problems. A series of example modules are associated with each chapter of the text. Some of the modules are used to produce examples in the text, and some are discussed in the homework at the end of each chapter. All of the modules are located online at an accompanying website which is designed to be a living component of the course. (available on the download tab)
