This book was released on 1993 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NCRP Report No. 116 is the latest in the long series of reports on basic radiation protection criteria that began in 1934. It supersedes the predecessor in the series, NCRP Report No. 91, which was published in 1987. The current Report takes advantage of new information, evaluations and thinking that have developed since 1987, particularly the risk estimate formulations set out in NCRP Report No. 115. While the recommendations set out in this Report do not constitute a radical revision of the basic criteria, they do represent a refinement of the system enunciated in Report No. 91. Important changes include the utilization of revised tissue/organ weighting factors and the introduction of radiation weighting factors. Also noteworthy is the introduction of an allowable reference level of intake. Noteworthy too is the recommendation of an age-based lifetime limit for control of occupational exposures and a major simplification of limits aimed at controlling the exposure of the embryo and fetus. This Report, after outlining the goals and philosophy of radiation protection and the basis for exposure limits, goes on to review, in some detail, absorbed dose, equivalent dose, radiation weighting factors, and effective dose. Committed equivalent dose and committed effective dose are also introduced. Risk estimates for radiation exposure are presented and then the dose limits are enunciated. The Report also covers exposure in excess of the limits, limits for unusual occupational situations, guidance for emergency occupational exposure, and remedial action levels for naturally occurring radiation.

Book excerpt: The symposium was convened in 1996 by NASA and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) to examine the philosophy of radiation protection and acceptable risk as it pertains to the three percent excess risk guidelines established in 1989. The objective was to examine the technological, strategic, and philosophical issues pertaining to acceptable risk and radiation in space. Presentations included the space radiation environment, biology relevant to space radiation, history of the development of radiation protection standards for space activities, analytic concepts for assessing risk as applied to human space flight, approaches to acceptable risk, perception and acceptance of risk from radiation exposure in space flight, physician and astronaut perspectives on philosophy on astronaut protection, and comments on space flight and radiation limits.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this Report is to provide design guidelines for radiation protection, and to identify those aspects of radiological safety that are of major, or even unique, importance to the operation of particle accelerator installations and to suggest methods by which safe operation may be achieved. The report is written from an engineering physics viewpoint and is intended to be useful to those engaged in the design and operation of accelerators, particularly in smaller institutions and organizations that do not have a large radiological-protection staff.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation New experimental and epidemiological findings include growing evidence of adaptive responses to small doses of radiation that may enhance the capacity of cells to withstand the effects of further radiation exposure, and new evidence concerning the possible nature of neoplastic initiation. Therefore, a committee of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements reassesses the weight of scientific evidence for and against the linear-threshold dose-response model for determining safe levels of exposure to ionizing radiation. The report also considers associated policy implications. It finds no reason for rejecting the model. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
