Book Synopsis Particle Induced Electron Emission II by :
Download or read book Particle Induced Electron Emission II written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron emission is a fundamental phenomenon which accompanies most interactions of energetic particles with solid surfaces. Not only is it a special effect which for almost ninety years has attracted the interest of physicists, but it is also of acute importance in such fields as radiation effects and transport phenomena in solids (e.g., radiation biology), plasma-surface interactions, microtechnology, surface analysis, ion microscopies, particle detector development and others. While Volume I emphasizes the theoretical description of the mechanisms of electron emission, this volume reviews modern experimental trends and aspects of the phenomenon, e.g., kinetic electron emission from massive solids and from thin foils under bombardment with positive, negative, and neutral particles, and the measurement of electron statistics in connection with potential and kinetic emission due to slow singly and multiply charged projectiles.
Book Synopsis Electron Emission From Slightly Oxidized Delta-stabilized Plutonium Generated by Its Radioactivity, and Radiation Induced Ionization and Dissociation of Hydrogen at Its Surface by :
Download or read book Electron Emission From Slightly Oxidized Delta-stabilized Plutonium Generated by Its Radioactivity, and Radiation Induced Ionization and Dissociation of Hydrogen at Its Surface written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy dependent electron emission between zero and 1.4 keV generated by the natural reactivity of plutonium was measured by an electrostatic spectrometer with known acceptance angle and acceptance area. The electron spectral intensity decreases continuously except for a distinctive feature of unknown origin at approximately 180eV. The spectrum was converted to energy dependent electron flux (e/cm2 s) using the assumption that the emission has a cosine angular distribution. The energy dependent electron mean free path in gases and literature cross sections for electron induced reactions were used to determine the number of ionization and dissociation reactions per cm2 second, found to be about 8*108/cm2s and 1.5*108/cm2s, respectively, for hydrogen. These results are to be used with caution until complementary measurements can be made, e.g. independent measurement of the total emitted electron current, since the results here are based on the assumption that the electron emission has a cosine angular distribution. That is unlikely to be correct.

Download or read book Particle Induced Electron Emission I written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses collision-induced electron emission from nearly free-electron metals by ion or electron impact. This subject is, as is well known, of acute importance in understanding plasma-wall interactions in thermonuclear reactors. It is also the basis for one of the most exciting technological developments of the last few years - scanning electron miscroscopy. Several electron excitation mechanisms of electrons in the target are considered: excitation of single conduction and core electrons, excitation by plasmon decay and by Auger processes. Transport of inner excited electrons is simulated by the Boltzmann equation incorporating both elastic and inelastic collisions. The numerical calculation of scattering rates uses a dynamically screened Coulomb interaction. These results for the energy distributions of emerging electrons as well as the electron yield are compared with recent experimental measurements on electron emission from polycrystalline aluminum.

Book Synopsis Radiation Modelling of Vacuum Field Emission Devices by : Adam Fisher Reynolds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in micro and nanofabrication techniques have enabled modern vacuum field emission devices (VacFEDs) and have been demonstrated in the laboratory for use as diodes and transistors. Modern VacFEDs operate through cold emission of electrons across a vacuum gap. It has been proposed that these devices are "radiation insensitive" since they do not have a solid state junction as in other modern electronic devices. Radiation testing has been conducted to characterize the radiation response for these devices however, minimal supporting modeling has been performed. This thesis attempts to model and quantify the radiation effects of modern VacFEDs. It focuses primarily on two effects associated with ionizing radiation exposure to a VacFED diode materials and structure: 1) The production of a net electron Direct Drive (DD) current in conductive layers due to imbalance in ionization rates in device layers and 2) Radiation Induced Conductivity (RIC) due to creation and drift of electron-hole pairs across an electric field of a dielectric insulating layer. These currents are treated as a noise sources that compete with the output signal of the device. Two radiation transport codes are used quantify interaction, electron charge and energy deposition of consequence to direct drive and RIC effects: 1) CEPXS/ONEDANT: a 1-dimensional electron-photon discrete ordinates code package and 2) MCNP6: a general-purpose, continuous-energy, generalized-geometry, time dependent, Monte Carlo radiation-transport code. RIC response was found to have the greatest current for all device models considered over all energies. This thesis found a dose rate of 6 x 106 rad(Si)/s at the surface of a VacFED diode is required to cause a 0.1 [mu] A noise current in a device designed to operate at 1.0 [mu]A. This finding suggests that VacFED technology has the capability to operate continuously in a modern pressurized water nuclear reactor core gamma ray environment, which has an approximate dose rate of 3 x 105 rad(Si)/s.

Book Synopsis The Physics of Plasmas by : T. J. M. Boyd
Download or read book The Physics of Plasmas written by T. J. M. Boyd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-23 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physics of Plasmas provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject, illustrating the basic theory with examples drawn from fusion, space and astrophysical plasmas. A particular strength of the book is its discussion of the various models used to describe plasma physics and the relationships between them. These include particle orbit theory, fluid equations, ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics, wave equations and kinetic theory. The reader will gain a firm grounding in the fundamentals, and develop this into an understanding of some of the more specialised topics. Throughout the text, there is an emphasis on the physical interpretation of plasma phenomena. Exercises are provided throughout. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students of physics, applied mathematics, astronomy and engineering will find a clear but rigorous explanation of the fundamental properties of plasmas with minimal mathematical formality. This book will also appeal to research physicists, nuclear and electrical engineers.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents measurements of the kinetic energy distributions of low-energy, positron-induced electrons emitted from single-layer of graphene (SLG), highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), Si, Cu and TiO2 surfaces. The electron kinetic energies were measured using UTA's 1m flight path ToF spectrometer attached to a variable energy positron beam. The unique capability of this system to transport extremely low-energy positrons(∼1 eV) to the sample surface while simultaneously measuring the energies of outgoing electrons with high collection efficiencies down to 0 eV has made possible the measurement of the full, background-free spectra of electrons emitted as a result of annihilation-induced Auger transitions. These capabilities have enabled the measurements presented here, which provide an unambiguous identification of the hitherto unexplored LVV Auger transition in oxygen and the first direct observation of an Auger process occurring entirely within the valence band of SLG. The TiO2 O LVV and SLG VVV line shapes have been theoretically investigated using a first principals-based model which incorporates the distribution of annihilation-induced holes, the self-convolution of the valence band density of states (DOS), and estimates of the electron escape probabilities. These results have important implications for the understanding of Auger-stimulated ion desorption, Coulombic decay, photodynamic cancer therapies, and may yield important insights into the radiation-induced reactive sites for corrosion and catalysis. Numerical simulations of the ToF spectrometer have made possible the direct comparison between the measured and calculated line shapes and have allowed the characterization of the system's transport efficiency, timing resolution, and energy resolution for the set of low-energy transport settings used in this work. Lastly, measurements of the kinetic energy distributions of electrons emitted as a result of Auger-mediated positron sticking (AMPS) at the surfaces of Cu, HOPG, SLG, and Si are presented and analyzed. First principles based modeling of the AMPS line shape provides an estimate of the positron surface state binding energy and suggests that a more detailed analysis may provide the basis for a novel, top-layer selective positron-induced electron spectroscopy.
