Book excerpt: The effect of x-ray or neutron irradiation and of plastic deformation on the structure of ionic crystals (LiF, NaCl, KCl, AgCl) and of metal crystals (Al, Zn, Cd, Sn) has been investigated. It was found that both irradiation and deformation generate additional interference patterns which appear on the background of diffusion peaks. As the intensity of irradiation or deformation increases, the number of these patterns increases to such an extent that they form a single arched dash. Under the effect of irradiation or deformation, single crystals break into fragments and their orientation becomes disrupted. The extent of crystal fragmentation depends on the crystal structure and the intensity of irradiation or amount of deformation. The changes in LiF crystal structure induced by neutron irradiation and plastic deformation are identical, as proved by the increase in the appearance of diffusion peaks observed during neutron irradiation of diamond, silicon, molybdenum, and quartz single crystals and in the deformation of aluminum single crystals. Since the changes in crystal structure produced by irradiation and deformation are similar, the residual defects in crystals produced by deformation and irradiation are also similar. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Physics of Radiation Effects in Crystals'' is presented in two parts. The first part covers the general background and theory of radiation effects in crystals, including the theory describing the generation of crystal lattice defects by radiation, the kinetic approach to the study of the disposition of these defects and the effects of the diffusion of these defects on alloy compositions and phases. Specific problems of current interest are treated in the second part and include anisotropic dimensional changes in x-uranium, zirconium and graphite, acceleration of thermal creep in reactor materials, and radiation damage of semiconductors and superconductors.

Hence, the critical resolved shear stress of irradiated material increases. While part of the radiation defects are swept by dislocations released from dislocation sources; therefore localization of plastic deformation are caused by a decrease of radiation defects at the partial region. In this study, in order to predict increase of flow stress due to irradiation, information of density of radiation defects is introduced into a hardening modulus of crystal plasticity. Moreover, a decrease of the work-hardening ratio is represented by considering the disappearance of the radiation defects originating in the dislocation movement. Values of the controlling parameters operating effect of the radiation defects on the flow stress are estimated by a molecular dynamics simulation. We conduct crystal plasticity simulations for copper single crystals under a simple tensile condition. The macroscopic stress-strain responses such as the increase of yield stress and the decrease of work-hardening ratio due to irradiation are numerically predicted. We investigate the effect of radiation defects and the dislocation behaviors on processes of the strain localization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively revised and updated, this new edition of a classic text presents a unified approach to crystallography and to the defects found within crystals. The book combines the classical and exact description of symmetry of a perfect crystal with the possible geometries of the major defects-dislocations, stacking faults, point defects, twins, interfaces and the effects of martensitic transformations. A number of important concepts and exciting new topics have been introduced in this second edition, including piezoelectricity, liquid crystals, nanocrystalline concepts, incommensurate materials and the structure of foamed and amorphous solids. The coverage of quasicrystalline materials has been extended, and the data tables, appendices and references have been fully updated. Reinforcing its unrivalled position as the core text for teaching crystallography and crystal defects, each chapter includes problem sets with brief numerical solutions at the end of the book. Detailed worked solutions, supplementary lecture material and computer programs for crystallographic calculations are provided online (http://booksupport.wiley.com).

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is essential to understand the deformation behavior of these Fe-Cr-Al alloys, in order to be able to develop models for predicting their mechanical response under varied loading conditions. Interaction of dislocations with the radiation-induced defects governs the crystallographic deformation mechanisms. A crystal plasticity framework is employed to model these mechanisms in Fe-Cr-Al alloys. This work builds on a previously developed defect density-based crystal plasticity model for bcc metals and alloys, with necessary modifications made to account for the defect substructure observed in Fe-Cr-Al alloys. The model is implemented in a Visco-Plastic Self Consistent (VPSC) framework, to predict the mechanical behavior under quasi-static loading.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Characterization of Crystal Growth Defects by X-ray Methods' held in the University of Durham, England from 29th August to 10th September 1979. The current interest in electronic materials, in particular silicon, gallium aluminium arsenide, and quartz, and the recent availability of synchrotron radiation for X-ray diffraction studies made this Advanced Study Institute particularly timely. Two main themes ran through the course: 1. A survey of the various types of defect occurring in crystal growth, the mechanism of their different methods of generation and their influence on the properties of relativelY perfect crystals. 2. A detailed and advanced course on the observation and characterization of such defects by X-ray methods. The main emphasis was on X-ray topographic techniques but a substantial amount of time was spent on goniometric techniques such as double crystal diffractometry and gamma ray diffraction. The presentation of material in this book reflects these twin themes. Section A is concerned with defects, Section C with techniques and in linking them. Section B provides a concise account of the basic theory necessary for the interpretation of X-ray topographs and diffractometric data. Although the sequence follows roughly the order of presentation at the Advanced Study Institute certain major changes have been made in order to improve the pedagogy. In particular, the first two chapters provide a vital, and seldom articulated, case for the need for characterization for crystals used in device technologies.
