Book excerpt: Global climate has changed dramatically in the last century, much of which occurred in the last four decades. One result of this has been a change in the physiological response of biota. While some organisms adjust to this variation in climate by shifting their range, established trees must endure the new conditions imposed upon them. Recent findings indicate recent warming has resulted in increased radial growth throughout much of the eastern United States. However, this increase may not be ubiquitous across all locations or site types and growth patterns may vary across topographic positions. I measured the dendrochronology (annual tree rings) of two co-occurring yet contrasting tree species, the mesic red oak (Quercus rubra) and the more xeric chestnut oak (Quercus montana). The study sites were located across replicated topographic gradients (lower slope, southeast aspect, northwest aspect, and ridge top) in the Ridge and Valley province of central Pennsylvania. I evaluated radial growth as a function of site type, tree age and diameter, disturbance events, and climate (temperature, precipitation, and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI)). Prior to the 1980s, growth rates on most sites were statistically similar. By the end of the 20th century, however, both species experienced significantly higher basal area increment (BAI) on southeast aspects than northwest sites. Increased growth rate was significantly correlated with increasing tree size. However, this relationship was disproportional across site types indicating other factors influenced growth. Throughout the study period, frequent disturbances from severe storms in the mid-1950s, 1966, and mid-1990s and gypsy moth outbreaks in the 1980s were also noted. Many stand-wide disturbances corresponded with significant climatic events, particularly on southeast aspect sites. Both species exhibited the highest tree ring release frequency on southeast aspects. Red oak and chestnut oak growth was also affected by temperature and precipitation as a function of topographic position, potentially facilitated by differences in disturbance. Red oak was negatively correlated with current year temperatures throughout the study period, particularly on northwest and ridge top sites. In contrast, chestnut oak on southeast and lower slope sites had a positive response to increasing temperature. Moreover, red oak BAI on northwest and ridge top locations were negatively correlated with winter temperatures while chestnut oak BAI was positively correlated with winter temperatures on lower slope and southeast sites. Chestnut oak growth on lower slope and southeast sites was also positively correlated with current year spring temperatures. Previous year precipitation was positively correlated with radial growth for both species on several sites types. Despite some predominant trends, differences in climate correlation did exist among similar sites. A transformed relative BAI (RBAI) produced the most significant climate correlations but with similar patterns to those with BAI and ring width index (RWI). Many environmental interactions and growth impacting factors changed in unison during the life of the study trees, including increasing temperature, precipitation, tree size, and disturbance events, making it difficult to isolate the impact of a single factor. Nevertheless, I conclude that changing climate patterns, including increased temperature, precipitation, and extreme climatic event intensity and frequency have and will continue to non-uniformly affect the growth rates of red oak and chestnut oak as a function of site type variation.

Book excerpt: Tree growth in sub-humid forests is influenced by environmental conditions that may differ across local topographic gradients. My study investigated how the growth of two conifer species (Pinus contorta var. latifolia and Picea glauca) varied across a range of habitats in a water-limited island forest landscape in western Canada. Historical precipitation from 1951-2016 had a positive overall effect on annual radial growth (as measured by tree rings), but the magnitude of this effect varied with proximity to a permanent water source and tree size. Mean annual precipitation had a greater positive influence on the growth of larger trees and on those growing far from water sources, a weaker positive effect on both species at intermediate distances from water, and the weakest influence on P. glauca trees growing close to water sources. These results indicate that tree growth rates may change if there is greater inter-annual variability of precipitation under climate change, though the magnitude and direction of these responses could be quite variable. The processes involved in tree growth and development can affect seasonal patterns of radial growth and wood density, which change across both space and time. I statistically partitioned the variation in four separate measures of growth (earlywood width, earlywood density, latewood width, and latewood density) across years, plots, and trees. Both ring width and wood density were more variable among individuals within sampling plots than they were among plots or between years. Most pairs of growth variables were positively correlated across years and individuals in the two species, but correlations between growth variables were mostly uncertain across sampling plots. An exploratory analysis revealed a number of tentative associations with environmental variables: temperature had a negative relationship with growth and latewood density; precipitation had a negative relationship with earlywood density; P. glauca growth was highest in aspen-dominated stands; P. contorta growth was negatively related to plot basal area; height and diameter had positive relationships with growth; age and slenderness had negative relationships with growth. A better understanding of variation in tree growth and wood density may lead to new insights into how wood production responds to environmental factors in a changing climate.

Fritts, published in 1976, provided a superb introduction to the science and an in-depth description of techniques useful for extracting climatic information from tree rings. This book, which was published by Academic Press, is sadly out of print and, even though only 12 years old, lim ited in its methods and applications. This is owing to the extremely rapid development of the science since the 1970s. Only recently have tree rings as environmental sensors been fully recog nized as a valuable tool in detecting environmental change. For example, tree ring measurements have been critically important in studies of forest decline in Europe and North America. There are also attempts to use tree-ring analysis for ecological prognosis to solve large-scale regional problems including the sustain ability of water supplies, prediction of agricultural crops, and adoption of silvi cultural measures in response to ecological changes. More speculatively, dendro chronological methods are also used for dating and evaluating some astrophysical phenomena and for indicating possible increase in the biospheric carrying capac ity due to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide.

This study aims at increasing the understanding on species-specific effects of climate factors on radial growth, which is necessary to assess the responses of tree radial growth to anticipated climate changes. We monitored radial growth response to climate fluctuation of four mature coniferous species ( Larix decidua and Abies alba) located at altitudes from 290 m a.s.l. to 377 m a.s.l., Zvolen valley, Central Slovakia. Based on continuous monitoring of stem radial variation of coniferous species using dendrometers within the growing season, daily changes in stem radial variation (u2206R) and extracted water deficit (u2206W), maximum daily shrinkage (MDS) and radial growth were extracted. Diurnal cycles were divided into the three phases of contraction, expansion and stem radius increment. We used Morlet wavelet analysis to assess the differences in cyclic radial stem variations between coniferous species. Stem radial variation and extracted variables (u2206W) were compared among coniferous species and the influences of environmental variables were evaluated by applying correlation analysis and moving correlation analysis (MCA). L. decidua showed more pronounced variability in seasonal course of stem radius variations than A. alba.
