Book excerpt: The simulation of the vehicle’s environmental sensors, the so-called sensor simulation, is crucial for testing and validating autonomous driving. Automobile manufacturers are increasingly focusing on a standardized architecture with a high level of abstraction. In order to simulate the sensors, such as radar sensors, most realistically on a point cloud level, data-based methods are used in many cases. In general, and specifically in case of radar sensors, there are still challenges to be faced. Therefore, four research questions are addressed: Is it possible to generate synthetic training data for data-based models? Which statistical approaches are suitable to simulate radar point clouds and how shall their learning capacities be evaluated? Is there a modeling approach to circumvent the disadvantages of statistical modeling? How to tackle the statistical nature of radar sensors during validation?

Book excerpt: Radar target simulators (RTSs) deceive a radar under test (RuT) by creating an artificial environment consisting of virtual radar targets. In this work, new techniques are presented that overcome the rasterization deficiency of current RTS systems and enable the generation of virtual targets at arbitrary high-precision positions. This allows for continuous movement of the targets and thus a more credible simulation environment.

Book excerpt: Analyzes and discusses the operating principle, signal processing method, and experimental results of this advanced radar technology This book systematically discusses the operating principle, signal processing method, target measurement technology, and experimental results of a new kind of radar called synthetic impulse and aperture radar (SIAR). The purpose is to help readers acquire an insight into the concept and principle of the SIAR, to know its operation mode, signal processing method, the difference between the traditional radar and itself, the designing ideals, and the developing method. It includes 10 chapters. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the basic principle of SIAR and its characteristic of four antis. Chapter 2 introduces the operating principles and system constitution of SIAR. Chapter 3 presents the main waveforms and the corresponding signal processing methods. Chapter 4 is about the long-time integration technique. Chapter 5 shows the high-accuracy measurement and tracking of 4D parameters of target in SIAR. The range-angle coupling and decoupling are introduced in Chapter 6, where a criteria for transmit frequency optimization of array elements is studied to overcome the coupling among range, azimuth and elevation. In Chapter 7, detection and tracking of targets in strong interference background is investigated. Chapter 8 analyzes quantitatively the influence of array error on the tracking accuracy of SIAR. Expansion of impulse and aperture synthesis to HF band and microwave band are introduced respectively in Chapter 9 and Chapter 10. The operating principle of the novel bi-static surface wave radar system, as well as the experimental system and the experimental results are included in Chapter 9. Book excerpt: This report describes the implementation of an intermediate frequency (IF) radar clutter generator. The generator provides signals for the monopulse tracking radar which forms part of the Electronic Warfare Engagement Simulation Facility. Land clutter signals with log normal, Weibull and exponential spatial amplitude distributions are produced, as well as exponential sea clutter signals. Fluctuating clutter from wind blown scatters is modelled using narrowband amplitude modulation. Clutter induced angle tracking errors are also represented. The report describes the major clutter mechanisms relevant to noncoherent radars in low grazing angle scenarios. The hardware and equations used in modelling are described, and the report presents envelope detected waveforms plots and histograms. This work has applications in accurate modelling of radar performance in low altitude engagements. Keywords: Cross section; Exponential grazing angle; Intermediate frequency jamming; Land clutter; Missile seeker; Monopulse; Polarization; Sea clutter; Sea state; Tracking; Moving target indicators; Canada.

Book excerpt: During the evolvement of autonomous driving technology, obtaining reliable 3-D environmental information is an indispensable task in approaching safe driving. The operational behavior of automotive radars can be precisely evaluated in a virtual test environment by modeling its surrounding, specifically vulnerable road users (VRUs). Such a realistic model can be generated based on the radar cross section (RCS) and Doppler signatures of a VRU. Therefore, this work proposes a high-resolution RCS measurement technique to determine the relevant scattering points of different VRUs.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper describes an object oriented model for simulation of a radar system and its environment. The input to the system is a set of radar, target and environmental specifications, and the output is a synthesized IF (Intermediate Frequency) signal similar to the one output after the IF amplifier stage of a radar. The model simulates the radar system using separate Radar, Environmental, and Target modules. In the Radar module the transmitter and the receiver modules are isolated. The transmitter module provides signal objects to the environment. The Target and Environmental modules generate instances of the model objects specified by the user and provide them to the environment. These object instances interact with the signal objects, and at the end of a sampling period backscattered signal objects are sampled by the receiver module. The system is designed for the maximum flexibility and for incremental improvement. Thus various radar systems and environmental settings can be simulated by changing the parameters of the associated modules. Many existing models for targets and specific environmental conditions can be incorporated into our model."
