Download or read book Fighting Words written by Raymond Evans and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an open heart and inquiring intellect, Raymond Evans sets out to uncover a past not studied in the school books of his youth. Growing up in the 1950s, he lived in a community devoid of Aboriginal presence. It was an enclave of Welsh migrant families, with all the rituals and traditions of a faraway "Home". His evolving historical consciousness was fired by the need to connect with these shadowy absences and to engage with his adopted homeland. Interwoven with his personal journey is a revealing selection of race relations histories, which cover a wide arena from the Aboriginal/European conflicts of colonial Queensland to the anti-Chinese riots of 1888 and civilian internment during World War I. Evans also moves beyond frontier conflict into the long period of repressive government control of Aboriginal lives. In writing on race, gender and labour relations he illustrates how selective history can be by omitting the contribution of Aboriginal labourers, men and women. These form a critical bridge to understanding the complexities of race relations today.

Book Synopsis Rethinking the Racial Moment by : Barbara Brookes
Download or read book Rethinking the Racial Moment written by Barbara Brookes and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years ‘race’ has fallen out of historiographical fashion, being eclipsed by seemingly more benign terms such as ‘culture,’ ‘ethnicity’ and ‘difference.’ This timely and highly readable collection of essays re-energises the debate by carefully focusing our attention on local articulations of race and their intersections with colonialism and its aftermath. In Rethinking the Racial Moment: Essays on the Colonial Encounter Alison Holland and Barbara Brookes have produced a collection of studies that shift our historical understanding of colonialism in significant new directions. Their generous and exciting brief will ensure that the book has immediate appeal for multiple readers engaged in critical theory, as well as those more specifically involved in Australian and New Zealand history. Collectively, they offer new and invigorating approaches to understanding colonialism and cultural encounters in history via the interpretive (not merely temporal) frame of ‘the moment.’

Download or read book Double Vision written by Margaret Slocomb and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Double Vision serves as a prequel to Among Australian Pioneers, which highlighted the experience of Chinese indentured laborers on the northern frontier from 1848 to 1880—a time of intense conflict. With this latest book, historian Margaret Slocomb responds to a call for more regional histories of early contact relations, so we can understand their complexity as well as the diversity of reactions and responses that followed. The author observes that encounters at the margins of settlement between new societies seeking profits and traditional owners defending their land are bruising, brutal affairs conducted beyond the reach of regular norms and conventions, and contested within a framework of conflicting, mutually incomprehensible and irreconcilable laws. The Northern Districts of Wide Bay and Burnett on the tribal lands of the Kabi Kabi and Wakka Wakka nations represented that frontier from roughly 1845 until Queensland formed a separate colony in 1859. Dispossession was violent by its very nature, but there was also accommodation and adaptation on one side, and compassionate advocacy on the other. Join the author as she seeks if not the full truth, at least a unified understanding of our shared history and mutual recognition of its contested nature.

Download or read book Australian Race Relations written by Andrew Markus and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Race Relations has been a subject of continuing controversy, whether focused on Aboriginal issues such as the High Court's Mabo decision, or the latest wave of immigrants. This book provides the historical context necessary for an understanding of contemporary issues in a society coming to terms with native title and multiculturalism. Based on over twenty years of research, Australian Race Relations is the first history of the subject that gives detailed consideration to both nineteenth and twentieth century developments. The book is particularly concerned with the broad patterns of race relations. It deals with the nature of racial consciousness, the dispossession of Aboriginal people, the role of racial minorities in the workforce, the eras of White Australia and assimilation, and contemporary society. Australian Race Relations will appeal to students of Australian history and society, and to everyone interested in the shape of modern Australia.
