And I just call it ‘the Homeless House’ ‘cause it’s the house that nobody fixes up." Faith is one of fourteen women living on Syracuse’s Southside, a predominantly African-American and low-income area, who took photographs of their environment and displayed their images to facilitate dialogues about how they viewed their community. A Place We Call Home chronicles this photography project and bears witness not only to the environmental injustice experienced by these women but also to the ways in which they maintain dignity and restore order in a community where they have traditionally had little control. To understand the present plight of these women, one must understand the historical and political context in which certain urban neighborhoods were formed: Black migration, urban renewal, white flight, capital expansion, and then bust. Ducre demonstrates how such political and economic forces created a landscape of abandoned housing within the Southside community. She spotlights the impact of this blight upon the female residents who survive in this crucible of neglect. A Place We Call Home is the first case study of the intersection of Black feminism and environmental justice, and it is also the first book-length presentation using Photovoice methodology, an innovative research and empowerment strategy that assesses community needs by utilizing photographic images taken by individuals. The individuals have historically lacked power and status in formal planning processes. Through a cogent combination of words and images, this book illuminates how these women manage their daily survival in degraded environments, the tools that they deploy to do so, and how they act as agents of change to transform their communities.

Book excerpt: In the woods of Massachusetts, pairs of contestants huddle in tents filled with communications equipment. Their voices soar through the air, riding waves into the atmosphere, as they comb through static and noise for a response from the other side of the world. They’re searching for loot—in the form of other voices in the sky. The rarer their contact, the more valuable their treasure. Joining them in their quest is author J. K. George, an experienced radio operator himself, who guides you through the exciting world of amateur radio competition and the intriguing characters of the 2014 World Radiosport Team Championship. The competitors hail from across the planet—from youthful challengers to veterans with decades of radiosporting experience. You will meet fascinating personalities not only among the teams themselves but also among their “widows”—spouses left behind for the allure of the airwaves. They battle computer malfunctions, getting lost, and staying at the top of their game for 24 hours in a hot, stuffy tent. The final scores bring surprises, disappointments, even a recount, and decades-long friendships will be stressed in the fight for the crown of amateur radio—the ultimate “contact” sport.

Book excerpt: The author sought to expand on the otherwise national emergency censorship order that developed during the time of events. As the second Earth diplomatic exchange transpired, in Saint Charles County, Missouri, US of A, an extension of plans to further destroy the United States of America began to unfold. Possibly the fifth time in the last fifty years by this adversary militancy-guerilla faction that would add another 1,300 Americans killed in the United States, an additional 325-plus US servicemen and servicewomen killed, and nearly another 1,000 injured. The extent that the US censorship order expanded national defense coverage would assist in various national security issues and further limit assassination attempts on local, state, national, and international elected officials and greatly reduce the numbers of fatalities and casualties associated. US President Bush Junior would suddenly skim the surface of these threats during the advance deployments during 9/11 responses. The Earth-English translation for the termed planet Nair (pronounced Nay-yeer, Nae-year, or Nai-Yer) would appear appropriate. A tentative human population of roughly 5.5-5.7 billion with similar civilization and culture philosophical parameters conducive with human-population standard. Almost identical human race(s) traces, traditions, and practices yet distinctly different. Readers who seek additional information should be cautioned, the standings of US censorship are still in effect, orderly and standing. Most elected officials may be restricted to "No comment" due to the extent of issues, facts, and circumstances applicable. Upcoming anticipated additional hearings and trials at the US Congress may present other information as time permits, or such procedural vote continuances become reestablished under emergency powers orders of the US Congress and subsequent sessions. Other "official" information may have been damaged or destroyed during the 9/11 attack events. Some items were stationed at the US Pentagon or were en route to the US capital just after first-contact events. AP (associated press) did a lot of pool drawing to have one international-national-recognized anchor (not affected by pre-/poststrike and labor negotiations at the time) to follow up and air-document events until other events developed at initial time of airing and subsequent US censorship order from established US military and US Government allowances at pre-/poststrike on networks where otherwise normal programming permitted by FCC guidelines or many stations viewing only "emergency alert" advisory caption. A second-class international-national-recognized anchor would do a follow-up with hospital permissions (e.g., first suffered a reported critical condition gunshot injury from drive-by militant guerillas at onsets of airing) though "spliced" and edited until US censorship order prevented additional media coverage at time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed at the NASA Lewis Research Center to study one aspect of spinning friction based on interfacial slip over the entire ball-race contact area. The apparatus is capable of measuring spinning moments of less than 0. Ol inch-pound at maximum Hertz contact stresses to over 400 000 psi, speeds to 3500 rpm, and under varying contact configurations and conditions. From the torque measurement, a coefficient of spinning friction can be calculated. The apparatus comprises a drive assembly, a dead-weight load assembly, a spherical upper test specimen, a cylindrically grooved lower test specimen of varying conformity, a lower test specimen housing assembly incorporating a hydrostatic air-bearing assembly, and a torque-measuring system. In operation, the upper test specimen is loaded against the lower test specimen through the drive shaft assembly by the dead- weight load assembly. As the drive assembly is rotated, the upper test specimen rotates against the stationary lower test specimen actuating the torque-measuring system. Preliminary tests were conducted under varying Hertz stress to 136 000-psi maximum Hertz stress at a spinning speed of 950 rpm, with a 51 percent ball-groove conformity using a polyphenyl ether (5P4E), a highly purified naphthenic mineral oil, and a di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate (MIL-7808). It was found that the coefficient of spinning friction decreased with increasing maximum Hertz stress to an intermediate stress level and had a minimum value of 0. 122, 0. 089, and 0. 050, respectively, for the lubricants listed previously.
