Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis' Every Woman's Cook Book First cover the table with a woollen cloth to protect the polished surface from hot dishes. Put on the table cloth, taking care to have it extend fifteen or twenty inches over the edge of the table. The plates should be set at least eighteen inches apart, the forks being placed on the left, the spoons and knives on the right of each plate. Napkins should be folded and put on each plate. In olden times the bread was put into the napkins on the plate, but at present it is passed around after soup is served. On the right of each plate are arranged in a circle the glasses to be used during the dinner, one glass for cocktail or sherry which should be served with the relishes, another for white wine to be served with the fish, a glass for the Bordeaux to be served with the entree, and one for the Burgundy to be served with the roast. If champagne follows, the glasses should be set on the table when the wine is ready to be served. Liqueurs are served in special glasses after cofiee. All wines and cordials are kept on a sideboard or table. Salt and pepper shakers should be placed in the spaces between the plates. Relishes, such as radishes, olives, salted nuts, or bonbons, should be placed at each end of the table, while owers may be spread over the table in a natural manner pleasing to the eye. Keep fruit in the centre of the table. Place the menu, if any, on the napkin in a manner easily to be seen. Book excerpt: The classic tale of one man’s struggle with alcoholism, this revolutionary novel remains Charles Jackson’s best-known book—a daring autobiographical work that paved the way for contemporary addiction literature. It is 1936, and on the East Side of Manhattan, a would-be writer named Don Birnam decides to have a drink. And then another, and then another, until he’s in the midst of what becomes a five-day binge. The Lost Weekend moves with unstoppable speed, propelled by a heartbreaking but unflinching truth. It catapulted Charles Jackson to fame, and endures as an acute study of the ravages of alcoholism, as well as an unforgettable parable of the condition of the modern man.

Book excerpt: NATUROPATHIC PHYSICAL MEDICINE provides a philosophical naturopathic perspective, as well as practical clinical applications, for manual and physical approaches to health care. A wide range of bodywork and movement approaches and modalities are evaluated in relation to their ability to be appropriately used in naturopathic treatment and rehabilitation settings. The model of care emphasised in this text recognizes that naturopathically oriented therapeutic interventions usually focus on achieving one or all of the following: enhancement of function so that the person, system or part, can better self-regulate in response to adaptive demands; modification or removal of adaptive load factors; and symptomatic relief without creation of significant additional adaptive changes.

Book excerpt: ‘On November 2nd armed with a sheaf of visas...one suitcase...and my typewriter, I left humdrum London for the thrilling cities of the world...’ In 1959, Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was commissioned by the Sunday Times to explore fourteen of the world’s most exotic cities. Fleming saw it all with a thriller writer’s eye. From Hong Kong to Honolulu, New York to Naples, he left the bright main streets for the back alleys, abandoning tourist sites in favour of underground haunts, and mingling with celebrities, gangsters and geishas. The result is a series of vivid snapshots of a mysterious, vanished world.
