Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Jane Eyre, first published in London in 1847 under Charlotte Brontes pen name Currer Bell, is a classic three-volume novel that exemplifies the tenets of both Gothic and Romantic fiction. Though popular on both high school and college required reading lists, it has also been a book well-beloved by readers for generations. Female readers make up the novels most ardent devotees, no doubt aided by the presence of a strong female protagonist and the undeniably alluring Byronic hero, Mr. Rochester. A novel indicative of the Victorian era from which it was produced, Jane Eyre holds readers enrapt with a classic Gothic mystery at its core and a heady romance between the two main characters. MEET THE AUTHOR Maureen Lee Lenker recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Southern California with a BA in history and cinematic arts, as well as a minor in theatre. She is currently a program assistant at the USC Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study. In the fall, she will continue her education as an MPhil student in history at the University of Oxford. Her concentration will be material culture in Renaissance England. In addition to her academic writing, she has written movie reviews and television recaps for the entertainment blog, The Popsicle. She is a classic film buff, a pop culture junkie, and a history enthusiast, and she is happiest when her life allows her to combine these three interests. She loves USC football (being a former member of the Trojan Marching Band), Disney, Impressionist Art, Broadway musicals, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. A life-long lover of the theatre, she enjoys attending, acting in, and producing plays. In her free time, she enjoys relaxing with a good book and a cup of tea or watching old movies on TCM. Or if shes feeling more adventurous, playing pub trivia at a bar with friends and a Pimms Cup in hand. Shes a die-hard Trojan, a hapless fan-girl, and a cockeyed optimist. Follow her on twitter at @maureenlee89 EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Bertha, the infamous madwoman in the attic, stands in stark contrast to Janes control. She is the embodiment of unchecked passion, and Rochester even describes her promiscuous behavior and delight in vices as symptoms of her lunacy. Her scraggly hair and loose nightgown are physical manifestations of Berthas lack of containment. Bertha's own inability to control and master her passions forces Rochester to physically confine and contain her within Thornfield. When she escapes her prison, her passionate nature pushes her to commit heinous acts of violence. Jane Eyre has long held a hallowed place in pop culture and public consciousness. In addition to the Wide Sargasso Sea, the novel has inspired countless spin-offs and sequels, such as Jasper Ffordes The Eyre Affair. In addition, it has been retold in over 10 film and mini-series adaptations and even a stage musical. The most recent film adaptation debuted in March 2011, and it starred Mia Wasikowska as Jane and Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rochester. Book excerpt: 'Excellent - I inhaled it, I absolutely loved it!... it's moving, and funny...It's a beautiful, beautiful read...for anyone who wants to laugh and be charmed' CLAUDIA WINKLEMAN, BBC Radio 2 'Wonderfully funny, utterly charming and sharp as all Hell' SARAH MILLICAN 'Tom Allen is one of the funniest comedians in the UK, the best dressed man I know and now it turns out he is a superb writer. I hate him' JOSH WIDDICOMBE ~~~~~ 'When I was 16 I dressed in Victorian clothing in a bid to distract people from the fact that I was gay. It was a flawed plan.' No Shame is a very funny, candid and emotional ride of a memoir by one of our most beloved comedians. The working-class son of a coach driver, and the youngest member of the Noel Coward Society, Tom Allen grew up in 90s suburbia as the eternal outsider. In these hilarious, honest and heart breaking stories Tom recalls observations on childhood, his adolescence, the family he still lives with, and his attempts to come out and negotiate the gay dating scene. They are written with his trademark caustic wit and warmth, and will entertain, surprise and move you in equal measure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twenty-five short essays demonstrate the beauty of style, the wit, and the sensibility for which Woolf is admired. "This book contains...the same delicious things to read as always....Virginia Woolf was a great artist, one of the glories of our time, and she never published a line that was not worth reading" (Katherine Anne Porter). Adeline Virginia Woolf (25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941) was an English writer, and one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One's Own (1929), with its famous dictum, "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the bestselling publication of THE KENNETH WILLIAMS DIARIES, the devastating self-portrait of one of our most loved and complex performers is completed with this marvellous selection of his letters. This is a wonderful treasure trove of correspondence with all manner of people, including Alec Guinness, Maggie Smith, Joe Orton, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and the Stokers' Mess of HMS Leverton. Kenneth Williams took letters very seriously, and he was always disgusted by a morning that failed to provide him with some material to pore over. Letters called forth the performer in Williams in a way that his diaries never did: many of them are virtual comic monologues, and in general they suggest more strongly than the diaries the likeable and constructive side of a man who remains, nevertheless, as outrageous and 'difficult' as ever.

Book excerpt: In To Be a Gay Man, Will Young speaks out about gay shame, revealing the impact it had on his own life, how he learned to deal with it, and how he can now truthfully say he is gay and happy. We know Will as a multi-platinum recording artist, Olivier-nominee, and the first winner of the Idol franchise. But his story began long before his first audition. Looking back on a world where growing up being called gay was the ultimate insult and coming out after a lifetime of hiding his sexuality, Will explores the long-lasting impact repressing his true self has had. As Will’s own story demonstrates, internalised shame in childhood increases the risk of developing low self-worth, and even self-disgust, leading to destructive behaviours in adult life. Will revisits the darkest extremes he has been to, sharing his vulnerabilities, his regrets, tracing his own navigation through it all and showing the way for others who might have felt alone in the same experience. Here you will find a friend, champion and mentor, breaking taboos with frank honesty, and offering invaluable practical advice on overcoming the difficult issues too often faced within the LGBTQ+ community.
