Book Synopsis Fundamental Questions Chiefly Relating to the Book of Genesis and the Hebrew Scriptures (Classic Reprint) by : Edson Lyman Clark

This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamental Questions Chiefly Relating to the Book of Genesis and the Hebrew Scriptures These theses are an attempt to solve, in the light of the latest and maturest results of historical, archaeological and scientific investigation, some of those great prob lems which have of late so agitated the Christian public. They are also a humble endeavor in the direction of that new Theology, a Theology historical, inductive, and strictly scientific, which is already taking form, and which is sure, at no distant day, to stand forth in full development to command the acceptance and belief of Christian men. Investigation has not finished its work, the realm of truth is as yet but half explored, and I am quite aware that the views and conclusions here pre sented can be, at the best, but an approximation to the truth. I' offer these theses to the public, confident of but one thing respecting them, which is, that they are an attempt in the right direction; but in the hope that, however short they may have fallen of their aim, they may at least prove helps and stepping-stones to others in a better and more successful search after the truth. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis and Science, or the First Leaves of the Bible Where I could not adopt their arguments or make their conclusions my own, I endeavoured to show, from what are deemed authoritative statements, how great is the confusion among themselves, and how utterly without weight and value, in consequence, must be the assertions hazarded by scientists against the Book of Genesis. If censured, as I shall be, for not recklessly deciding some of the burning questions of the day, I shall quietly submit and take it very patiently. Is there not a time for everything '3 If revelation has long since closed its canon, certainly science has not, and before this is done, it is vain to apprehend danger for the cause of truth. Book excerpt: An ancient Roman history text, translated by Charles Yonge, and written by the Greek philosopher Philo of Alexandria. The Embassy to Gaius was a meeting between Gaius Caligula, the then Roman Emperor, and a large contingent of Jews. They wished to overturn Gaius' plans to have a huge statue of Zeus installed in the temple. Gaius' hatred of the Jews is legendary. This book is important because it helps to understand the relations between Jews and Romans in the first century A.D.
Book Synopsis Three Questions of Formative Judaism by : Jacob Neusner
Download or read book Three Questions of Formative Judaism written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic study of Judaism requires a systematic inquiry into the history, literature, and religion—and eventually the theology—as revealed in the historical documents themselves. Under this premise, Three Questions of Formative Judaism encounters the canonical writings of Judaism in the context of their creation at a certain time and place. How something is said thus becomes as important as what is said. Bringing nearly fifty years of research to bear on these fundamental questions, Jacob Neusner challenges his readers to face the difficult, often unasked or neglected questions about the nature, background, and purposes of Rabbinic Judaism and rewards them with an enriched understanding and a stronger foundation for tackling the even more elusive questions concerning the theology of formative Judaism. Book Synopsis The Early Narratives of Genesis (Classic Reprint) by : James Orr

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis The subject A nave Men asked to speak on is a large one, and is complicated with many questions - critical, archaeological, scientific, exegetical. You will therefore bear with me if many points have to be touched upon in a cursory manner, and if some things have to be omitted altogether on which you would probably wish to hear me Speak. The subject is the Early Narratives in the Book of Genesis. By the Early Narratives are to be understood the first eleven chapters of the Book - those which pre cede the times of Abraham. These chapters present peculiarities of their own, and I confine attention to them, although the critical treatment applied to them is not confined to these chapters, but extends through out the whole Book of Genesis, the Book of Exodus, and the later history with much the same result in reducing them to legend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book Synopsis The Beginning of Things in Nature and in Grace by : Joseph K. Wight
Download or read book The Beginning of Things in Nature and in Grace written by Joseph K. Wight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginning of Things in Nature and in Grace: Or a Brief Commentary on Genesis It is evident that our interpretation of the Bible will depend very largely upon what we consider the Bible to be. If we look upon it simply as a human production among other human productions, - a system of religion among other systems, - then we shall expect mistakes, false standards, and false reasonings, as we do elsewhere. But if the Bible is exceptional - a revelation from God, and not merely the teachings of man, we shall expect to find it a transcript of his character - a pure, true, and safe guide in all that it professes to be. It is given to man as God's way of salvation from sin and death. In dealing with it, the question of authorship is our first question. The Word And Works Of God Equally From Him It is much the same with the word of God as with his works. Where did the heavens and the earth come from? Did God make them? or did solid ground come from nebulous matter and that we know not whence? If so, then we may believe in a chance law evolving an orderly cosmos out of chaos, in vegetable and animal, coming as the result of spontaneous generation, and man with his wonderful faculties and possibilities the descendant of Simian ancestors. This is a unique introduction, translation, and commentary of his Questions on Genesis - a fascinating work showing a Christian working alongside Jews in an age very different from our own. Jerome's influence on the Church is well known - but this work is equally important for the light thrown on the history and origin of many ideas at the heart of the Jewish tradition.

Book Synopsis Without Form and Void by : Arthur C Custance
Download or read book Without Form and Void written by Arthur C Custance and published by Classic Reprint Press. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered a classic in Christian apologetics, this scholarly analysis of the Biblical phrase "without form and void," from the opening chapter of Genesis, observes the rules of linguistics, of grammar and syntax, and also examines how words are used in the rest of Scripture. This book has been described as the best argument that has ever been written for the Gap Theory. A well respected Canadian scientist himself, and listed in the 1971 American Men in Science, Dr. Custance contends that we should not allow science to determine what Scripture says. Neither should we allow Scripture to determine what the scientist observes in the laboratory. Yet observed fact in the one cannot, ultimately, conflict with revealed fact in the other. Any conflict, then, is in the interpretation of the facts - not in the facts themselves.
