Download or read book Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Supervision written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Supervision, guest expert supervisor, Dr. Joan E. Sarnat, demonstrates and discusses this approach to supervision. The goal of relational psychodynamic supervision is to create a more experiential, participatory, and relationship-focused form of supervision, one that not only provides usable psychotherapeutic knowledge and skills, but also facilitates the emotional and relational development that is essential to becoming an effective psychodynamic psychotherapist. In this video, Sarnat and her supervisee engage in a supervisory session, and host Dr. Hanna Levenson interviews them about their work together, exploring the constructs of this model and the nature of the supervisory relationship. In the session, Dr. Sarnat's supervisee conveys that she is frustrated by how her patient is discounting her during the termination phase of therapy. By becoming aware of and working with her own feelings of frustration within the session, Dr. Sarnat demonstrates the art of using a reenactment to help the supervisee deepen her awareness and thereby facilitate the therapy."--

Book Synopsis Rebellion and Violence in Islamic Law by : Khaled Abou El Fadl
Download or read book Rebellion and Violence in Islamic Law written by Khaled Abou El Fadl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khaled Abou El Fadl's book represents the first systematic examination of the idea and treatment of political resistance and rebellion in Islamic law. Pre-modern jurists produced an extensive and sophisticated discourse on the legality of rebellion and the treatment due to rebels under Islamic law. The book examines the emergence and development of these discourses from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries and considers juristic responses to the various terror-inducing strategies employed by rebels including assassination, stealth attacks and rape. The study demonstrates how Muslim jurists went about restructuring several competing doctrinal sources in order to construct a highly technical discourse on rebellion. Indeed many of these rulings may have a profound influence on contemporary practices. This is an important and challenging book which sheds light on the complexities of Islamic law and pre-modern attitudes to dissidence and rebellion.

Download or read book Shari’a written by Abbas Amanat and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents ten leading scholars' writings on contemporary Islamic law and Muslim thought. The essays examine a range of issues, from modern Muslim discourses on justice, natural law, and the common good, to democracy, the social contract, and "the authority of the preeminent jurist." Changes in how Shari'a has been understood over the centuries are explored, as well as how it has been applied in both Sunni and Shi'i Islam. Debates on the nature, interpretation, reform, and application of Shari'a lie at the core of all Islamist revivalist ideologies and movements of the past two centuries. The demand for the implementation of Shari'a is one of the hallmarks of Islamic fundamentalism, and Shari'a has become one of the most controversial and politicized concepts in Muslim-majority countries today. This is one of the first books to examine how Muslims understand and apply Shari'a in contemporary societies.
Book Synopsis Islamic Law and the Law of Armed Conflict by : Niaz A Shah
Download or read book Islamic Law and the Law of Armed Conflict written by Niaz A Shah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic Law and the Law of Armed Conflict: The Conflict in Pakistan demonstrates how international law can be applied in Muslim states in a way that is compatible with Islamic law. Within this broader framework of compatible application, Niaz A. Shah argues that the Islamic law of qital (i.e. armed conflict) and the law of armed conflict are compatible with each other and that the former can complement the latter at national and regional levels. Shah identifies grey areas in the Islamic law of qital and argues for their expansion and clarification. Shah also calls for new rules to be developed to cover what he calls the blind spots in the Islamic law of qital. He shows how Islamic law and the law of armed conflict could contribute to each other in certain areas, such as, the law of occupation; air and naval warfare; and the use of modern weaponry. Such a contribution is neither prohibited by Islamic law nor by international law. Shah applies the Islamic law of qital and the law of armed conflict to a live armed conflict in Pakistan and argues that all parties, the Taliban, the security forces of Pakistan and the American CIA, have violated one or more of the applicable laws. He maintains that whilst militancy is a genuine problem, fighting militants does not allow or condone violation of the law. Islamic Law and the Law of Armed Conflict will be of interest to students and scholars of international law, Islamic law, international relations, security studies and south-east Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Islamic Political Ethics by : Sohail H. Hashmi
Download or read book Islamic Political Ethics written by Sohail H. Hashmi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most dynamic aspects of the Islamic revival during the past two centuries has been the rethinking of Islamic political thought. A broad range of actors, ideas, and ideologies characterize the debate on how Islamic ethics and law should be manifested in modern institutions. Yet this aspect of the "return to Islam" has been neglected by policymakers, the media, and even many scholars, who equate "political Islam" with merely one strand, labeled "Islamic fundamentalism." Bringing together ten essays from six volumes of the Ethikon Series in Comparative Ethics, this book gives a rounded treatment to the subject of Islamic political ethics. The authors explore the Islamic ethics of civil society, boundaries, pluralism, and war and peace. They consider questions of diversity, discussing, among other subjects, Islamic regimes' policies regarding women and religious minorities. The chapters on war and peace take up such crucial and timely issues as the Islamic ethics of jihad, examining both the legitimate conditions for the declaration of war and the proper conduct of war. In their discussions, the contributors analyze the works of classical writers as well as the full range of modern reinterpretations. But beyond these analyses of previous and contemporary thinkers, the essays also reach back to the two fundamental sources of Islamic ethics--the Qur'an and traditions of the Prophet--to develop fresh insights into how Islam and Muslims can contribute to human society in the twenty-first century. The authors are Dale F. Eickelman, Hasan Hanafi, Sohail H. Hashmi, Farhad Kazemi, John Kelsay, Muhammad Khalid Masud, Sulayman Nyang, Bassam Tibi, and M. Raquibuz Zaman. From the foreword by Jack Miles: "Western foreign ministers and secretaries of state may have to learn a little theology if the looming clash between embattled elements both in the West and in the Muslim umma is to yield to disengagement and peaceful coexistence, to say nothing of fruitful collaboration. . . . It is, then, no idle academic exercise that the thinkers whose work is collected here have in hand. The long-term practical importance of their work can scarcely be overstated."

Download or read book Hadith written by Jonathan A.C. Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular opinion, the bulk of Islamic law does not come from the Quran but from hadith, first-hand reports of the Prophet Muhammad’s words and deeds, passed from generation to generation. However, with varying accounts often only committed to paper a century after the death of Muhammad, Islamic scholars, past and present, have been faced with complex questions of historical authenticity. In this wide-ranging introduction, Jonathan A. C. Brown explores the collection and criticism of hadith, and the controversy surrounding its role in modern Islam. This edition, revised and updated with additional case studies and attention to the very latest scholarship, also features a new chapter on how hadiths have been used politically, both historically and in the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Informative and accessible, it is perfectly suited to students, scholars and general readers interested in this critical element of Islam.
