Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety professionals communicate, directly and indirectly with a large number of employees and others on a daily basis. While not lawyers, they regularly deal with legal issues. A subset of their responsibilities includes how to discuss safety without crossing the discriminatory line. To do this, they need an understanding of discrimination laws. Written for safety professionals, this book provides general knowledge of the various laws and regulations that offer protection to employees and individuals against discrimination in the workplace. It takes a proactive approach to identifying situations where potential discrimination against an employee or individual may occur, and provides guidance on how to take immediate action to address the potential discriminatory situation. The book discusses new laws and amendments to existing laws, and illustrates the filing process for claims. Chapters cover the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability Management is perceived and understood to be an important approach to reducing the negative impact, for workers and the company, of absence due to illness and accidents, and to assisting those with disabilities to enter or re-enter the workplace. Disability Management has already become established in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Recently European countries have begun to promote the approach in order to reduce illness related expenses and avoid unemployment, early retirement and costs to the welfare state. In Disability Management and Workplace Integration leading researchers from around the World consider the development of Disability Management over the last three decades. They examine the on-going debate about methodology and implementation of disability management strategies and programmes, highlighting the critical debate about the implications of a stricter cost-benefit approach to Disability Management theory and practice. Professionals involved in workplace integration, researchers approaching workplace integration from a variety of perspectives such as sociology; rehabilitative medicine; psychology; education; social policy; and economics, and students on a range of courses, will appreciate this valuable book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical movement has a positive effect on physical fitness, morbidity, and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Although exercise has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, many health care providers fail to prescribe it. In addition, many fitness professionals may be unaware of the complexities of including physical activity in the management of diabetes. Giving patients or clients a full exercise prescription that take other chronic conditions commonly accompanying diabetes into account may be too time-consuming for or beyond the expertise of many health care and fitness professionals. The purpose of this book is to cover the recommended types and quantities of physical activities that can and should be undertaken by all individuals with any type of diabetes, along with precautions related to medication use and diabetes-related health complications. Medications used to control diabetes should augment lifestyle improvements like increased daily physical activity rather than replace them. Up until now, professional books with exercise information and prescriptions were not timely or interactive enough to easily provide busy professionals with access to the latest recommendations for each unique patient. However, simply instructing patients to “exercise more” is frequently not motivating or informative enough to get them regularly or safely active. This book is changing all that with its up-to-date and easy-to-prescribe exercise and physical activity recommendations and relevant case studies. Read and learn to quickly prescribe effective and appropriate exercise to everyone.

Hulett Highlights Age Discrimination and Challenges Finding a Job in Middle Age MINNEAPOLIS American jobs are vanishing at a rapid rate in todays dismal economy. Job bias claims have been hitting record highs while jobless markets continue to flood the nation, forcing millions into unemployment and underemployment. John K. Hulett seeks to draw attention to age discrimination in the workplace and how the current shortage of jobs is affecting older job-seekers in his comprehensive new book, AGE DISCRIMINATION: AN EPIDEMIC IN AMERICA AFFECTING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES (published by AuthorHouse). Experience and wisdom are two qualities that come with age and they cannot be purchased or degreed, gifted nor substituted for youth, greed, and ignorance, Hulett writes. AGE DISCRIMINATION: AN EPIDEMIC IN AMERICA chronicles five failed investigations prompted by Huletts lawsuit claiming age discrimination. Hulett details how the government participated in these investigations and how large corporations are protected from employee claims because of their close relationships with many government agencies. He also thoroughly examines the correlation between todays deep recession and age discrimination. For more information, visit www.agediscriminationamerica.com. also www.eyesofmainstreet.com.
