Book excerpt: In 1762, Abraham Wing led a group of Quakers to lands he had acquired on the edge of the Adirondacks. Soon, a cluster of log cabins surrounded the mills that Wing had built at the falls on the Hudson River. By the early 19th century, Queensbury consisted of several small hamlets and the village of Glens Falls, which grew into an industrial and commercial center. Factories produced lumber, lime, paper, shirts, and cement, and the city featured many stores, churches, theaters, and a hospital. The surrounding township remained largely agricultural but offered such recreational activities as golf, swimming, fishing, boating, and skiing. After World War II, commercial momentum shifted to Queensbury as motels, tourist attractions, and shopping centers sprang up along Route 9, the main route to Lake George and the Adirondacks.

Book excerpt: The name Glens Falls went through a series of changes, beginning simply as "the Corners," after a bend in the road from a major military installation in Fort Edward. In the 1700s, it was known as Wing's Falls, and later Pearlville, Pearl Village, and Glenn's Falls; but by the middle of the 1800s, it was determined to be Glens Falls, one of the wealthiest villages in the state. It was the people who settled in the town that helped to shape it. The lumber barons provided the financial backing to begin banking and insurance institutions and served as officers of every major business and governmental agency in town. Glens Falls People and Places covers the lives of the prosperous and preposterous people and their contributions to the city's development through the 20th century.

Book excerpt: This is a book of reflections by A.A. members for A.A. members. It was first published in 1990 to fulfill a long-felt need within the Fellowship for a collection of reflections that moves through the calendar year--one day at a time. Each page contains a reflection on a quotation from A.A. Conference-approved literature, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, As Bill Sees It and other books. These reflections were submitted by members of the A.A. Fellowship who were not professional writers, nor did they speak for A.A. but only for themselves, from their own experiences in sobriety. Thus the book offers sharing, day by day, from a broad cross section of members, which focuses on the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous: Recovery, Unity and Service. Daily Reflections has proved to be a popular book that aids individuals in their practice of daily meditation and provides inspiration to group discussions even as it presents an introduction for some to A.A. literature as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kingsbury lies at the bend of the Hudson where the river turns southward, near Bakers Falls, the largest falls on the entire river. The area did not attract attention until after 1755, when a British officer in the French and Indian War ordered that a road be cut between the Hudson River and Lake George. That road opened the land to speculators and eventually to settlers. Kingsbury and Hudson Falls contains more than two hundred images of the people and places vital to the history of the area. Many of the photographs date from the 1870s and have never before been published. Some of the images show Kingsbury's oldest and most important document, the 1762 deed that sets out the boundaries of the new town; the Glens Falls Feeder Canal, which in 1833 gave the town and village important access to the outside world; and the 1863 four-story Middleworth House, which in its day was considered one of the finest hotels in northeastern New York State.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Kate White returns with a gripping story about a true-crime reporter uncovering the secrets that lie beneath the surface of a placid small town, perfect for readers of Jessica Knoll, Alafair Burke, and Liv Constantine. Blonde. Beautiful. A loving mother. And missing since Monday. On a sunny morning in late September, Shannon Blaine sets off for a jog along the rural roads near her home in Lake George, New York. It’s her usual a.m. routine, her “me time” after dropping the kids off at school…except on this day she never returns. Is her husband lying when he says he has no clue where she is? Could Shannon have split on her own, overwhelmed by the pressures of her life? Or is she the victim of a sexual predator who had been prowling the area and snatched her before she knew what was happening. True crime writer Bailey Weggins, on assignment for the website Crime Beat, heads north from New York City to report on the mysterious disappearance. An anonymous tip soon leads Bailey to a grisly, bone-chilling discovery. Every town has its secrets, Bailey reminds herself, and nothing is ever as perfect as it seems. She keeps digging for answers until—when it’s almost too late—she unearths the terrifying truth.
