This book was released on 2004 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated in color throughout, this handsome volume presents selected papers from an international symposium held in June 2001 marking the completion of a ten-year project to conserve the Last Judgment mosaic, at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The project was a partnership between the Office of the President of the Czech Republic, the Prague Castle Administration, and the Getty Conservation Institute. The goal of the symposium was to present the methodology, research, and results of the project, which involved conserving one of the finest examples of monumental medieval mosaic art in Europe. The volume's essays are divided into three parts, which cover the historical and art-historical context, conservation planning and methodology, and project implementation and maintenance. Topics addressed include the history, iconography, and visual documentation of the mosaic; the development and application of surface cleaning and protective coating techniques for the mosaic's glass tesserae; and post-treatment monitoring and maintenance.

In this book, Muhsin Mahdi, whose critical edition of the text brought so much praise, explores the complex literary history of the Nights, bringing to fruition the search for the archetype that constituted the core of the surviving editions, and treating the fascinating story of the growth of the collection of stories that we now know as The Thousand and One Nights.
Book Synopsis Transport Revolutions by : Richard Gilbert
Download or read book Transport Revolutions written by Richard Gilbert and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight without Oil sets out the challenges to our growing dependence on transport fuelled by low-priced oil. These challenges include an early peak in world oil production and profound climate change resulting in part from oil use. It proposes responses to ensure effective, secure movement of people and goods in ways that make the best use of renewable sources of energy while minimizing environmental impacts.Transport Revolutions synthesizes engineering, economics, environment, organization, policy and technology, and draws extensively on current data to present important conclusions. The authors argue that land transport in the first half of the 21st century will feature at least two revolutions. One will involve the use of electric drives rather than internal combustion engines. Another will involve powering many of these drives directly from the electric grid - as trains and trolley buses are powered today - rather than from on-board fuel. They go on to discuss marine transport, whose future is less clear, and aviation, which could see the most dramatic breaks from current practice. With its expert analysis of the politics and business of transport, Transport Revolutions is essential reading for professionals and students in transport, energy, town planning and public policy.

Book Synopsis The Ottawa River Canal System by : Normand Lafrenière
Download or read book The Ottawa River Canal System written by Normand Lafrenière and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a brief history of the Ottawa River canal system from the time construction began until 1963. Although the Carillon Canal (a national historic park) would normally have been the focal point of such an undertaking, a specific study of this canal proved virtually impossible owing to the lack of information pertaining to its initial construction period. Records of the commercial use of the canal over the years were equally sparse. Fortunately, however, the history of the Carillon Canal is closely linked with that of several other canals (the Vaudreuil, St. Anne's, Chute-a-Blondau, and Grenville canals) constructed on the lower Ottawa River in the early 19th century. As a consequence this study encompasses the entire Ottawa River canal system.

Book Synopsis Nine Chains to the Moon by : Richard Buckminster Fuller
Download or read book Nine Chains to the Moon written by Richard Buckminster Fuller and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of Buckminster Fuller’s first work published in 1938, which was promoted by Albert Einstein. In 43 chapters the constructor, visionary, inventor, designer, creator of language, and spectacular performer rolls out the art of independent thought. Fuller lays out an enormous horizon and Nine Chains to the Moon is equivalent to a navigation across the world we live in: "What Is a House?", "Death and Life", "Longing Crosses the Sea", "Dollarability", "We Call it Earth", "Stomach Rhythms", "Ephemeralization"—from the microscopic to the automobile, to the house, to urbanity, to the image of the cosmos in constant movement. The title, said Fuller, is meant to stimulate open thinking: the 1938 world population, one person on the shoulders of another, will reach from the earth to the moon nine times!
