Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen: The Conspiracies of 1806 and 1813, Against the Princess of Wales, Linked With the Atrocious Conspiracy of 1820, Against the Queen of England The Queen lande and reached the capital, amidst the love, and prayers, and joyful acclamations of her faithful people. He panic of conscious guilt, the cold ral sis of a premeditated atrocity, seized her enemies. Rea ing their hired witnesses, apprehensive of discovery and de feat, startled by the prospect of impeachment block, they would have capitulated; and, in for their own escape, they offered terms. Aflirt, h ing oppression upon op ression, and wrong upon wrong, ese inhuman an merci ess persecutors, at the end of twenty four years of nu merited conjugal injuries, would have the weaker rty, the sufferer and the innocent, to consent, herself, by a public act, and a fresh sacrifice, to a last sur render, incompatible with her honor. At t when humanity wept and trembled, and simulation, cloaked in the outward sanctities of religion, had marked her fall, a deep prayer ascended to Heaven in her behalf, from the fire-side sym ethics of England; from the chaste wives and mothers, t e true husbands and fathers, from the hearts and souls of the whole of her faithful subjects. Her noble nature rose superior to this last hard trial she stood firm, and rejected the insidious and dishonorable pro position. With the commanding ascendency, which God has so largely blessed her with, she calmly braved the crisis. London was surrounded, and entered, by forty thousand troops; trains of artille raded the streets and fortifications were erected, as i? T e capital was about to stand a sack or siege immediately. Thus entrenched, steeled against, the feelings of nature, deaf to the voice of the public, the managers of the tragad opened their green bags; the grave actors entered upon t re stage; and the examination of the foreign witnesses, hired fin' the d adation of a oaownsn head, ' began. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Conspiracy Narratives proposes an innovative semiotic perspective for analysing how contemporary conspiracy theories are used for shaping interpretation paths and identities of a targeted audience. Conspiracy theories play a significant role in the viral spread of misinformation that has an impact on the formation of public opinion about certain topics. They allow the connecting of different events that have taken place in various times and places and involve several actors that seem incompatible to bystanders. This book focuses on strategic-function conspiracy narratives in the context of (social) media and information conflict. It explicates the strategic devices in how conspiracy theories can be used to evoke a hermeneutics of suspicion – a permanent scepticism and questioning of so-called mainstream media channels and dominant public authorities, delegitimisation of political opponents, and the ongoing search for hidden clues and coverups. The success of strategic dissemination of conspiracy narratives depends on the cultural context, specifics of the targeted audience and the semiotic construction of the message. This book proposes an innovative semiotic perspective for analysing contemporary strategic communication. The authors develop a theoretical framework that is based on semiotics of culture, the notions of strategic narrative and transmedia storytelling. This book is targeted to specialists and graduate students working on social theory, semiotics, journalism, strategic communication, social media and contemporary social problems in general.

Arrested on accusations of witchcraft and treason, Chant finds himself trapped in a cold, filthy jail cell in a foreign land. With only his advocate, the unhelpful and uninterested Consanza, he quickly finds himself cast as a bargaining chip in a brewing battle between the five rulers of this small, backwards, and petty nation. Or, at least, that's how he would tell the story. In truth, Chant has little idea of what is happening outside the walls of his cell, but he must quickly start to unravel the puzzle of his imprisonment before they execute him for his alleged crimes. But Chant is no witch—he is a member of a rare and obscure order of wandering storytellers. With no country to call his home, and no people to claim as his own, all Chant has is his wits and his apprentice, a lad more interested in wooing handsome shepherds than learning the ways of the world. And yet, he has one great power: his stories in the ears of the rulers determined to prosecute him for betraying a nation he knows next to nothing about. The tales he tells will topple the Queens of Nuryevet and just maybe, save his life.

Book excerpt: In this original and timely assessment of cultural expressions of paranoia in contemporary Russia, Eliot Borenstein samples popular fiction, movies, television shows, public political pronouncements, internet discussions, blogs, and religious tracts to build a sense of the deep historical and cultural roots of konspirologiia that run through Russian life. Plots against Russia reveals through dramatic and exciting storytelling that conspiracy and melodrama are entirely equal-opportunity in modern Russia, manifesting themselves among both pro-Putin elites and his political opposition. As Borenstein shows, this paranoid fantasy until recently characterized only the marginal and the irrelevant. Now, through its embodiment in pop culture, the expressions of a conspiratorial worldview are seen everywhere. Plots against Russia is an important contribution to the fields of Russian literary and cultural studies from one of its preeminent voices.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many generations, Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot, the 'Man in the Iron Mask' and the 'Devils of Loudun' have offered some of the most compelling images of the early modern period. Conspiracies, real or imagined, were an essential feature of early modern life, offering a seemingly rational and convincing explanation for patterns of political and social behaviour. This volume examines conspiracies and conspiracy theory from a broad historical and interdisciplinary perspective, by combining the theoretical approach of the history of ideas with specific examples from the period. Each contribution addresses a number of common themes, such as the popularity of conspiracy theory as a mode of explanation through a series of original case studies. Individual chapters examine, for example, why witches, religious minorities and other groups were perceived in conspiratorial terms, and how far, if at all, these attitudes were challenged or redefined by the Enlightenment. Cultural influences on conspiracy theory are also discussed, particularly in those chapters dealing with the relationship between literature and politics. As prevailing notions of royal sovereignty equated open opposition with treason, almost any political activity had to be clandestine in nature, and conspiracy theory was central to interpretations of early modern politics. Factions and cabals abounded in European courts as a result, and their actions were frequently interpreted in conspiratorial terms. By the late eighteenth century it seemed as if this had begun to change, and in Britain in particular the notion of a 'loyal opposition' had begun to take shape. Yet the outbreak of the French Revolution was frequently explained in conspiratorial terms, and subsequently European rulers and their subjects remained obsessed with conspiracies both real and imagined. This volume helps us to understand why.
