Download or read book Que Linda la Brisa written by James Drake and published by Pamela Auchincloss Gallery. This book was released on 2000 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three poetic statements unite and intertwine in this slim volume to create a rare insight into the lives of people who bear witness to the exclusionary nature of society's most basic assumptions about the nature of gender and desire: men in women's bodies, outcasts, who make their living as prostitutes. With the caring eye of an intimate observer, Benjamin Alire Saenz allows the reader to witness the hopes, fears and dangers of their transformations, sketching their daily lives in a series of short fragmentary prose-poems, showing the familiarity of the seemingly alien. Jimmy Santiago Baca's first person poem pushes the transformation further still, allowing as well as forcing the reader to recognize the frailty and pain caused by a culture's ideas of what constitutes the normal. James Drake's photographs unite the poems, complementing them with a visual thread of equally poetic intensity: changing faces, reflections in mirrors, blood and fears, as well as hopes and guardian angels.

Download or read book Lateral Thinking written by Toby Kamps and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward de Bono invented the term lateral thinking and defined it as such: "1.You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper. 2.Lateral Thinking is for changing concepts and perceptions instead of trying harder with the same concepts and perceptions. 3.In self-organizing information systems, asymmetric patterns are formed; Lateral Thinking is a method for cutting across from one pattern to another." As the title of this book, Lateral Thinking refers to the non-traditional approach that the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, has applied to building its collection. Curatorially independent, striking a balance between the regional and the global, the emerging artist and the established figure, the MCA has always worked to represent important developments in mainstream art while also identifying significant developments that fall outside of conventional categories. The museum's efforts to illuminate a new axis mapping the contemporary art world -- one running north and south through North, Central, and South America instead of east and west through the United States and Europe. Featuring the work, in virtually all media, of more than 65 artists including Matthew Barney, Jose Bedia, Vanessa Beecroft, John Currin, David Hammons, Gary Hill, Gabriel Orozco, Edward Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, and Lisa Yuskavage.

Book Synopsis Spilling the Beans in Chicanolandia by : Frederick Luis Aldama
Download or read book Spilling the Beans in Chicanolandia written by Frederick Luis Aldama and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, a prolific "second wave" of Chicano/a writers and artists has tremendously expanded the range of genres and subject matter in Chicano/a literature and art. Building on the pioneering work of their predecessors, whose artistic creations were often tied to political activism and the civil rights struggle, today's Chicano/a writers and artists feel free to focus as much on the aesthetic quality of their work as on its social content. They use novels, short stories, poetry, drama, documentary films, and comic books to shape the raw materials of life into art objects that cause us to participate empathetically in an increasingly complex Chicano/a identity and experience. This book presents far-ranging interviews with twenty-one "second wave" Chicano/a poets, fiction writers, dramatists, documentary filmmakers, and playwrights. Some are mainstream, widely recognized creators, while others work from the margins because of their sexual orientations or their controversial positions. Frederick Luis Aldama draws out the artists and authors on both the aesthetic and the sociopolitical concerns that animate their work. Their conversations delve into such areas as how the artists' or writers' life experiences have molded their work, why they choose to work in certain genres and how they have transformed them, what it means to be Chicano/a in today's pluralistic society, and how Chicano/a identity influences and is influenced by contact with ethnic and racial identities from around the world.

Book Synopsis The Time of Freedom by : Cindy Forster
Download or read book The Time of Freedom written by Cindy Forster and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The time of freedom" was the name that plantation workers-campesinos-gave to GuatemalaÆs national revolution of 1944-1954. Cindy Forster reveals the critical role played by the poor in organizing and sustaining this period of reform.Through court records, labor and agrarian ministry archives, and oral histories, Forster demonstrates how labor conflict on the plantations prepared the ground for national reforms that are usually credited to urban politicians. She focuses on two plantation zones that generated exceptional momentum: the coffee belt in the highlands around San Marcos and the United Fruit Company's banana groves near Tiquisate. Although these regions were unlike in size and complexity, language and race, popular culture and work patterns, both erupted with demands for workersÆ rights and economic justice shortly after the fall of Castañeda in 1944. A welcome balance to the standard "top-down" histories of the revolution, Forster's sophisticated analysis demonstrates how campesinos changed the course of the urban revolution. By establishing the context of grassroots mobilization, she substantially alters the conventional view of the entire revolution, and particularly the reforms enacted under President Albenz.
