Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the proceedings of the First International Conference on Frontiers of Polymer Research held in New Delhi, India during January 20-25, 1991. Polymers have usually been perceived as substances to be used in insulations, coatings, fabrics, and structural materials. Defying this classical view, polymers are emerging as a new class of materials with potential applications in many new technologies. They also offer challenging opportunities for fundamental research. Recognizing a tremendous growth in world wide interest in polymer research and technology, a truly global "1st International Conference on Frontiers of Polymer Research" was organized by P. N. Prasad (SUNY at Buffalo), F. E. Karasz (University of Massachusetts) and J. K. Nigam (Shriram Institute for Industrial Research, India). The 225 participants represented 25 countries and a wide variety of academic, industrial and government groups. The conference was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Chandra Shekhar and had a high level media coverage. The focus of the conference was on three frontier areas of polymer research: (i) Polymers for photonics, where nonlinear optical properties of polymers show great promise, (ii) Polymers for electronics, where new conduction mechanisms and photophysics have generated considerable enthusiasm and (iii) High performance polymers as new advanced polymers have exhibited exceptionally high mechanical strength coupled with light weight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technology of second harmonic generation in channel waveguides made from poled polymers was developed for interaction geometries appropriate for (1) cascading and wavelength shifting, and (2) for wavelength demultiplexing. For fundamental beams which generate a harmonic along the same propagation direction, various phase matching geometries were studied which relied on periodically modulating the linear refractive index and/or the nonlinearity (QPM) in DANS. Although this approach with interdigitated poling electrodes did produce the best results ever reported in polymeric systems, it was not competitive with those in the ferroelectric QPM-LiNbO3. The best results were obtained using modal phase matching in which a low order fundamental waveguide mode was velocity matched to a higher order harmonic mode. By using multiple layers with successive layers poled in opposite directions, a figure of merit equal to LiNbO3 was achieved in the polymer DR1. However, the large losses at the second harmonic reduced the effective sample length and hence the absolute conversion efficiency. For oppositely propagating fundamental inputs, a geometry appropriate to demultiplexing, alternatively poled layers led to the largest conversion efficiencies for any material system for second harmonic beams radiated normal to the waveguide surfaces.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Dipolar Reorientation Dynamics of Pure Bulk Polymers Using Second Harmonic Generation by :
Download or read book Investigation of Dipolar Reorientation Dynamics of Pure Bulk Polymers Using Second Harmonic Generation written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second harmonic generation (SHG) in three corona-poled, pure, bulk polymers is studied as a function of temperature. It is found that this technique readily yields dynamical information that is complementary to that obtained from the technique of dielectric relaxation (DR). The SHG results are compared to those from DR in the same temperature ranges above T sub g. If is found that in the temperature ranges examined, the relaxation times obtained from SHG are several orders of magnitude longer than those measured by dielectric relaxation. This is explained as being due to the strong correlation between oriented dipoles and to trapped charges injected by the poling process. Fitting measured data to the Williams-Landau-Ferry (WLF) equation indicates that more free volume is needed in SHG for dipolar reorientation than is needed in DR. An SHG relaxation elongation phenomenon at constant temperature is found to occur in the pure bulk polymers and is similar to that found in chromophore- doped polymers previously studied. The SHG technique is developed as a new tool to directly study the reorientational dynamics of polar polymer segments.

Download or read book Electro-Optics and Second Harmonic Generation of Nonlinear Optical Polymers written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The susceptibilities for second harmonic generation (SHG)x31(2) x33(2) of a new high tg polymer, 1,2-benzyl-1,2-cyclohexy l-bridged syndioregic a-cyanocinncimamide (BCSCCA) have been measured by using a Maker fringe apparatus. The BCSCCA was spin coated on a quartz substrate. The film of about 1 um thickness has shown a large birefringence before poling, thus indicating molecular alignment due to spin coating. The polar order was induced by poling the film at 215 C with the corona discharge. The SHG coefficients d33 is equal to 3.54 pm/V and dl3 = 0.95 pm/V at 532 nm. The d-coefficients are stable and show negligible decay over one month. The SHG intensities at 532, 528, 476, 403, 366 mn are also observed. A large resonance enhancement in the SHG intensity was observed inside the absorption band.

Download or read book Frequency Doubling in Poled Polymers Using Anomalous Dispersion Phase-matching written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report on a second harmonic generation in a poled polymer waveguide using anomalous dispersion phase-matching. Blue light ([lambda]= 407 nm) was produced by phase-matching the lowest order fundamental and harmonic modes over a distance of 32[micro]m. The experimental conversion efficiency was[eta]= 1.2[times] 10[sup[minus]4], in agreement with theory. Additionally, they discuss a method of enhancing the conversion efficiency for second harmonic generation using anomalous dispersion phase-matching to optimize Cerenkov second harmonic generation. The modeling shows that a combination of phase-matching techniques creates larger conversion efficiencies and reduces critical fabrication requirements of the individual phase-matching techniques.
