The lake is particularly sensitive and important to the study of paleo‐climate changes, because the climate in the catchment area is dominantly influenced by the Westlies. Dating of lake paleo-shorelines and lacustrine sediments can provide chronological evidence of water level and climate changes. No evidence for Holocene high lake level was found by previous studies. The ages of samples were determined using Optical Stimulated Luminescence methodologies. Slope method was used for the determination of equivalent dose of quartz. Series of Lx and Tx from a number of aliquots for each regenerative dose are analyzed to obtain an averaged slop value of the Lx/Tx, by separately fitting Lx-Tx plots under each regenerative dose. In this thesis, slope method was tested for a series of young lacustrine sediment. It is found that using the slope method can save 40% time of conventional SAR procedure. The errors were reduced with large number of natural aliquots. This approach can effectively improve the reliability of optical dating. It is preferred for dating of young samples, because of weak signals and poor precision. Fifteen lacustrine sediments and shoreline deposits were dated. These samples were from a borehole, a profile section and shoreline deposits of the latest high lake level. High-resolution data were achieved by using slope method of OSL signals from quartz for the lacustrine sediments. Magnetic susceptibility of these samples was measured as a proxy for revealing paleo-climate changes. The OSL ages suggested that the lake had experienced a rapid deposition process during 200 600 years ago. Such ages agreed well with the ages of last high lake level, which was the age of little ice age. It is concluded that the paleo-climate of Lake Manas was cold and wet during the little ice age. Sedimentation gaps with age gap of 70ka were found between sediments of little ice age and sediments beneath, from both the lacustrine borehole and paleo‐shorelines. It implies that Lake Manas probably drained for a considerable time. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5334850 Subjects: Lake sediments - China, Northwest Paleolimnology - Holocene

Book excerpt: Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating is a tool used in Quaternary Geology for assessing ages of depositional mineral grains such as quartz, feldspars and zircons. In particular, OSL showed to be exceptionally robust and reliable for dating quartz samples. OSL dating relies on the assumption that the luminescence signal of grains is fully reset to zero by sunlight exposure before deposition. If this requirement is not fulfilled (i.e. grains were 'poorly-bleached'), ages may be grossly overestimated. In particular, poor-bleaching can significantly affect age estimations of young sediments. Standard procedures for estimating the burial dose of a sediment make use of a large number of grains (aliquot) that is measured simultaneously. This approach has been shown to work well, but only on homogeneously bleached sediments. An alternative way to investigate poor-bleaching within a sample is to measure the OSL signal from individual grains rather than from aliquots made up of several thousands of grains. The advantage is that individual grains with large doses (possibly due to poor-bleaching) can be identified and dealt with. detectable signals and luminescence responses are weak. The aim of this publication is to determine the feasibility of applying dating techniques to individual grains of quartz from deposits formed within the last 300 years.

The two principle methods are luminescence dating and electron spin resonance. Both are based on stored energy produced by the absorption of natural radioactivity in common minerals such as quartz and feldspars, and in some biological materials such as tooth enamel. Methodological developments in the last 20 years have substantially increased the accuracy and precision of these methods. This compilation offers a taste of the recent research into both method and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical dating is a rapidly developing technique, used primarily in the dating of sediments deposited in the last 500,000 or more years. As such increasing numbers of Quaternary geologists, physical geographers, archaeologists, and anthropologists are now relying on the results produced. Written by one of the foremost experts on optical dating, this book aims to bring together in a coherent whole the various strands of research that are ongoing in the area. It gives beginners an introduction to the technique as well as acting as a valuable source of up to date references. The text is divided into three parts; main text, technical notes and appendices. In this way the main text is accessible by those researchers with a limited knowledge of physics, with the technical notes providing depth of understanding for those who require it. The first part of the book is concerned with basic notions and an introduction to the standard techniques, as well as several illustrative case histories. It goes on to then discuss the limitations of the technique and factors affecting reliability.

Book excerpt: Luminescence dating is now widely applied by scientists working in Quaternary geology and archaeology to obtain ages for events as diverse as past earthquakes, desertification and cave occupation sites. Using quartz or feldspar minerals found in almost ubiquitous sand and finer sediments, luminescence can provide ages from over 500,000 years ago to modern.Written by some of the foremost experts in luminescence dating from around the world, this book takes a new approach. It explains what luminescence can and can't do, what and where to sample, types of measurements available and how to interpret and analyse ages once they are measured. It is accordingly for scientists who require luminescence ages for their research rather than those scientists developing the luminescence technique or making their own luminescence measurements. The background to the technique is explained in simple terms so that the range of potential applications, limits and issues can be understood. The book helps scientists plan where and what to sample to optimise the successful application of luminescence and stemming from that the chronologies that can be constructed. The Handbook sets out the challenges and limitations when applying luminescence dating in different environmental and archaeological settings and gives practical advice on how issues might be avoided in sampling, or mitigated by requesting different laboratory measurement approaches or analysis. Guidance is provided on how luminescence ages can be interpreted and published as well as how they can be used within chronological frameworks. With luminescence dating continuing to develop, information on more experimental approaches is given which may help expand the range of chronological challenges to which luminescence dating can be routinely applied.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF OPTICAL DATING USING QUARTZ AND POTASSIUM-FELDSPAR FROM QUATERNARY SEDIMENTS Submitted by Bo Li for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in November 2007 New methods were presented for the dating of Quaternary sediments using luminescence signals from quartz and potassium-feldspar (K-feldspar) grains. These are based on fundamental studies carried out on separated quartz and feldspar grains. Estimation of the equivalent dose using the fast component and the medium component of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) from quartz grains was investigated using both linear-modulated OSL (LM-OSL) and continuous-wave OSL (CW-OSL) techniques. By mathematical fitting of the LM-OSL curves, the fast component of the quartz OSL signal can be separated from the signals observed for mixed mineral grains in order to determine the equivalent dose (D ). The medium component underestimates the D for old samples, and this is attributed to its thermal e instability. A method was proposed to evaluate the D values for the fast component and medium component by analyzing the D as a function of stimulation time. Three kinds of source traps (i.e. shallow, medium and deep sources) for thermal transfer in quartz were identified. The shallow source is thermally unstable below 260C and is mainly related to the main OSL trap. The medium source is the primary charge source (peak 300C). The deep source is dominant at higher temperatures. Two kinds of OSL traps were identified as accepting the charges from the medium and deep sources. These OSL traps have different thermal stabilities and associated sensitization processes from those of the main OSL traps. A method was proposed to correct for thermal transfer effects for young samples based on the linear relationship between the initial and final parts of the thermally transferred OSL signals in repeated heat/OSL measurement cycles. A new isochron method involving measurement of the IRSL signals from K-feldspar grains of different size was proposed. It is based on the observation that the IRSL signal due to the internal dose does not appear to fade. The consistency between the isochron ages and quartz ages for 12 sediment samples from different geological settings suggests that the isochron method can be used to overcome anomalous fading. It can also be used to avoid problematic effects from changes in environmental dose rate. It was successfully applied to a lacustrine section showing significant changes in environmental dose rate due to a recent uptake of radioisotopes. The validity of the method was also tested using single grain IRSL measurements on K-feldspar grains. Optical dating using quartz was applied to the Holocene lacustrine and fluvial sediments at the Dagouwan section in the Sala Us River bank, Mu Us Desert. The results indicate that the Holocene Optimum occurred between 8.3 and 5.0 ka ago. After 5.0 ka ago, the Holocene Optimum terminated and the climate became dry again. The Sala Us River began to cut through the underlying Quaternary sediments after 2 ka ago with a down-cutting rate of 3-4 cm/year. The drainage of the Sala Us River accelerated the disappearance of the lake water and the deterioration of the local environment. However, impacts from human activities a

Book excerpt: Abstract: Luminescence dating has become a pillar of the understanding of Pleistocene glacial advances in the northern foreland of the Swiss Alps. However, both quartz and feldspar from the region are equally challenging as dosimeters with anomalous fading and partial bleaching being some of the obstacles to overcome for the establishment of decisive chronologies. In this study, luminescence properties of coarse- and fine-grained quartz, feldspar, and polymineral fractions of eight samples from a palaeovalley, Rinikerfeld in northern Switzerland, are systematically assessed. Standard performance tests are conducted on all four fractions. Deconvolution of luminescence signals of the quartz fractions is implemented and shows the dominance of stable fast components. Reader-specific low preheat temperatures are investigated on the infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signal of feldspar. Thermal stability of this signal is found for low preheats, and thermal quenching could be excluded for higher preheats. However, anomalous fading is observed in the feldspar and polymineral IRSL signals and two correction approaches are applied. For one approach, fading corrected coarse-grained feldspar ages are consistent with those derived from quartz. In general, coarse-grained quartz and feldspar, as well as the fine-grained polymineral fraction of one sample, are in chrono-stratigraphic agreement and present negligible evidence for partial bleaching. However, ages derived from fine-grained quartz are found to underestimate those of the coarse-grained quartz fractions. Hence, the impact of alpha efficiency and water content on the dose rate and thus the ages are assessed. A finite explanation for the observed discrepancies remains lacking, but this systematic investigation of different luminescence signals allows for the establishment of a chronology for the palaeovalley fill dating back to at least Marine Isotope Stage 6 (MIS 6)

Book excerpt: Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating is a relatively new dating method, tangibly introduced in 1985 when Huntley et al. demonstrated the ability to use light-sensitive traps to measure radiation exposure and determine the age of sediment. Quartz and feldspar grains are commonly used for the method, with quartz receiving significantly more attention than feldspars until the past decade. Recent research has improved the practicality of using feldspars as a reliable dosimeter --an appealing notion as the intrinsic properties of feldspars allow them to date older sediment that may lie beyond the reliable range of quartz dosimetry. This work explores and utilizes the contemporary feldspar technique termed post-infrared, high-temperature infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) dating to add to the existing knowledge base of this method, particularly by testing different preheat and measurement temperature combinations. Analysis of the each pIRIR method indicates that the pIRIR signal stimulated at 225°C is more appropriate for dating than the pIRIR signal stimulated at 290°C. Techniques and protocols developed in this work are done so via their application to a marine terrace that is displaced by the San Andreas Fault. Corals from the terrace along the Pacific plate, dated with U-series by Muhs et al. (2002), offer an age estimate. Comparison of the pIRIR ages to the U-series ages yield an underestimation, suggesting the pIRIR method may be more useful as a means of correlating terraces across the fault, than for providing ages of terrace formation.
