Book excerpt: The goal of this monograph is to summarize the different quantum mechanical methods developed in the last 20 years to treat the electronic structure of polymers. Owing to the nature of the problem, these methods consist of a mixture of quantum-chemical and solid-state physical tech niques. The theory described in Part I treats, besides the Hartree-Fock problem, the· electron correlation, and it has also been developed for disordered polymeric systems. Though for obvious reasons the book could not include all the existing calculations, each new method des cribed is illustrated by a few applications, with a discussion of the numerical results obtained. Far more details see the Introduction to Part I. The second part contains the theoretical calculation of different properties of polymers based on the methods systematically introduced in the first part. The properties calculated include the electronic and vibrational spectra of polymers, and the computation of their transport, magnetic, and mechanical properties. In cases where reliable ex perimental data are available, the theoretical results are compared with them.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure and Properties of Polymers" was held at the Facultes Universitaires de Namur (F.U.N.) from August 31 till September 14, 1977. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, the main sponsor of this Institute, and to the Facultes Universitaires Notre Dame de la Paix and their Board who gave us generous financial help as well as accommodation for the School. Our sincere thanks to Dr Tilo Kester from the NATO Scien tific Affairs Division and Prof. Roger Troisfontaines, Rector and President ~f the Facultes Notre Dame de la Paix. This volume contains the main lectures of the Institute. It is our great pleasure to thank all the lecturers for their most excellent and interesting lectures and for the clarity of their manuscripts. During the School the participants and lecturers felt that though there has been considerable progress in recent years in the methods applicable to the quantum theoretical treatment of polymers, not very many calculations of their properties have been performed. This is the reason that the title of this volume has been changed to "Quantum Theory of Polymers".

This book was released on 1991-01-25 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for those who are interested in understanding the electronic structure and properties of polymers. The scope of the book is to provide the non-specialist reader with a comprehensive and unified description: (i) of quantum mechanical methods, mainly originating from quantum chemistry, to calculate the electronic properties of polymers, (ii) of their use for interpreting and predicting results in fields where the electronic structure is playing an important role, like the electrical conductivity and the non linear optical properties of conjugated polymers. It will also serve as a reference book to lecture graduate students on the electronic structure of polymers or more generally of quasi-one dimensional materials. In this framework, it is worth stressing that the quantum theory of polymers bridges the gap between chemistry and physics. Since no book of this kind involving a strong interaction between theoretical and experimental concepts is available at the moment, it will also meet a need for a timely monograph in a field of important and fast growing interest.

Book excerpt: In polymer science and technology, the advanced development of various new polymer materials with excellent properties and functions is desirable. For this purpose it is necesary to determine the exact relationship between physical properties and molecular structure-dynamics with powerful techniques. One such technique is solid state NMR. Recently, high resolution NMR studies of solids have been realized by using advanced pulse and mechanical techniques, which has resulted in a variety of structural and dynamical information on polymer systems. Solid state NMR has provided characteristic information which cannot be obtained by other spectroscopic methods. This book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the principles of NMR, important NMR parameters such as chemical shifts, relaxation times, dipolar interactions, quadrupolar interactions, pulse techniques and new NMR methods. In the second part, applications of NMR to a variety of polymer systems in the solid state are described. Features of this book: • Contains an up-to-date and comprehensive account of solid state NMR of polymers by leading researchers in the field • Provides a compilation of solid state NMR of polymers, which makes it an ideal reference book for both NMR researchers and general polymer scientists. This book will be of interest to the NMR community, and will be invaluable for both the beginner and the expert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I like the way the book starts with bonds between atoms before the obligatory chapter on crystalline solids, followed by an excellent treatment of mechanical properties. The standard topics of solid-state physics are then presented, starting with electronic properties. There is a splendid final chapter on polymers. The style is confident, authoritative and up to date ...Richard Feynman, in evaluating his own attempt to teach quantum mechanics early in a physics course, reckoned he had failed. Has Richard Turton succeeded? I think he has. Andrew Briggs, professor of materials, University of Oxford The Times Higher, 24 November 2000 (Physics and Engineering)This book is aimed at first and second year undergraduates taking a course in solid state physics. It is suitable for physics or engineering students. It is aimed at a substantially lower level than the majority of solid state physics texts. in particular, it does not assume any prior knowledge of quantum theory. The text is largely non-mathematical, but questions are integrated into the text to encourage readers to tackle the problem-solving aspects of the subject. Worked examples and a complete set of detailed solutions are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of original research papers which were presented in honor of the Bordon Award recipient, Professor Eric Baer, on the occasion of the 55th Meeting of the American Chemical Society (Atlanta, Georgia, March, 1981). The contributors are present or former colleagues and students who have worked with him in the Department of Macromolecular Science at Case Institute of Technology of Case Western Reserve University. Throughout his work, Eric Baer has attempted to find the relation ships of solid state structure and hierarchy to the resultant pro perties from which specific functions are derived. Although he has studied many seemingly unrelated subjects, from irreversible de formation, mechanics and yield processes in amorphous polymeric solids to structural organization and mechanical function of ten don, his unique goal has been to develop models from the real structure that would allow a quantitative description of properties. Today, this area of "microscience" is rapidly expanding as new and sophisticated applications of polymeric materials with multifunc tional properties are emerging from our understanding and control of the solid state. The wide-ranging ideas and the original ity of Professor Baer's contributions have stimulated many new concepts which are now widely accepted in the field of high polymers. The contributions to this volume represent many of the areas which he has explored.

Book excerpt: It is undoubtedly true that much of the progress in the quant~m theory of matter is due to the remarkable success of the independent particle model (IPM)--especially in describing ground states. However, the accurate experimental results of the last 10 years or so, on a variety of spectroscopic phenomena and chemical processes which involve the Excited State, and the related failure of the IPM to reproduce accurately--in many cases, even qualitatively--the observed data, have sent to theorists a clear message: There is need to create and/or apply general and useful approaches to the many-electron problem of the excited state which go beyond the IPM, treat electron correlation and relativity and explain or predict all relevant physical or chemical information with consistent accuracy. This book contains articles devoted mainly to some of the most important new developments in Quantum Chemistry concerning the theoretical foundations and the computational implementation of many-body approaches to the quantitative and detailed under standing of the electronic excited states of atoms, molecules and solids. Furthermore, it contains experimental and pheno menological articles on Photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy, Lifetime measurements and Organic Photochemistry. In combination or individually, these articles constitute a good description of some current theoretical and experimental work on the electronic structure and spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, polymers, surfaces, metal oxides and amorphous solids.

Book excerpt: It is difficult to imagine how our highly evolved technological society would function, or how life would even exist on our planet, if polymers did not exist. The intensive study of polymeric systems, which has been under way for several decades, has recently yielded new insights into the properties of assemblies of these complex molecules and the physical principles that govern their behavior. These developments have included new concepts to describe aspects of the many body behavior in these systems, microscopic analyses that bring our understanding of these systems much closer to our understanding of simple liquids and solids, and the discovery of novel chemistry that these molecules can catalyze. This special topic volume of Advances in Chemical Physics surveys a number of these recent accomplishments. Supplemented with more than 250 illustrations, it provides a significant, up-to-date selection of papers by inter-nationally recognized researchers. Topics include: * Theory of Polyelectrolyte Solutions * Star Polymers: Experiment, Theory, and Simulation * Tethered Polymer Layers * Living Polymers * Transport and Kinetics in Electroactive Polymers Self-contained, authoritative, and timely, Polymeric Systems makes the cutting edge of polymer research available to scientists in every branch of chemical physics. In the area of methodology, we have perfected the band theory code MOSOL, which is based on the semiempirical MNDO (and its closely related versions, AM1 and PM3) all developed with some AFOSR support. In the course of this work we have included a screw axis of symmetry for polymers; extended the method to metallic systems and improved the convergence of the calculations. We have introduced methodology applicable to a wide class of polymers and properties based on the oligomer approach. We have developed a new analytical theory for the calculation of the elastic modulus, Y, of polymers.
