This mental blink is when neural pathways reroute from merely reading and goes through the cognitive parts of our brain. This aids in comprehension and memory. Do your own research! With this realization I decided to begin breaking my essays down into verse, with the line breaks strategically placed to cause the reader to pause and ponder. It should be no secret that ADHD kids are quite often the smartest kids in the class, but get the lowest grades. This technique of breaking things down into smaller bits has had fairly dramatic and positive results for my students. I am frankly flabbergasted as to why Special Ed. teachers don't use this technique. Having said that, my verse is not the most horrible in the galaxy - the second worst, at best. I'm hiding under the McGonagall moniker from the Galactic Gendarmes who have declared jihad against my musings. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Book excerpt: Time travel is a familiar theme of science fiction, but is it really possible? Surprisingly, time travel is not forbidden by the laws of physics - and John Gribbin argues that if it is not impossible then it must be possible. Gribbin brilliantly illustrates the possibilities of time travel by comparing familiar themes from science fiction with their real-world scientific counterparts, including Einstein's theories of relativity, black holes, quantum physics, and the multiverse, illuminated by examples from the fictional tales of Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Carl Sagan and others. The result is an entertaining guide to some deep mysteries of the Universe which may leave you wondering whether time actually passes at all, and if it does, whether we are moving forwards or backwards. A must-read for science fiction fans and anyone intrigued by deep science.

Book excerpt: "In the past four decades, there has been growing interest in the exciting new topic of physics in low dimensions. Thousands of original ideas have been proposed in the literature, and some are confirmed experimentally, along with several Nobel prizes which have been awarded in this field. While there are several books available, almost all are technical and accessible only to expert researchers. This book provides an accessible introduction to the field, with less emphasis on technical details. Whilst this book does not provide a traditional history of nano-science, instead it uses simple explanations and case studies as vehicles to explain key discoveries and the importance of them, enabling readers without a background in the area to gain an understanding of some aspects of nanoscale physics. It will be of interest to researchers working in condensed matter physics, in addition to engineers and advanced students in those disciplines. It also remains accessible to 'physics enthusiasts' from other academic disciplines, as technical details are contained within boxes and footnotes which can be skipped for a general reading of the book. Features: - Provides an accessible introduction to a technical subject - Contains exciting developments from the cutting-edge science being conducted in the area - Authored by a recognised expert in the field"--

Book excerpt: Arguably the most prolific and most widely read philosopher of our time, Slavoj Žižek has made indelible interventions into many disciplines of the so-called human sciences that have transformed the terms of discussion in these fields. Although his work has been the subject of many volumes of searching criticism and commentary, there is no assessment to date of the value of his work for the development of these disciplines. Žižek Now brings together distinguished critics to explore the utility and far-ranging implications of Žižek's thought and provide an evaluation of the difference his work makes or promises to make in their chosen fields. As such, the volume offers chapters on quantum physics and Žižek's transcendentalist materialist theory of the subject, Hegel's absolute, materialist Christianity, postcolonial violence, eco-politics, ceremonial acts, and the postcolonial revolutionary subject. Contributors to the volume include Adrian Johnston, Ian Parker, Todd McGowan, Bruno Bosteels, Erik Vogt, Verena Conley, Joshua Ramey, Jamil Khader, and Žižek himself.

Book excerpt: Critical Praise for Hyatt Carter's previous book Thinking Is the Best Way to Travel Hyatt Carter has now shared stations along the way of his intellectual experiences in his Thinking is the Best Way to Travel: Essays along the Journey. Carter is that rare creature, an independent polymath, the scarcity of which in the epoch of specialization has severely scarred contemporary life. There are dabblers aplenty, but the polymath in full flow is an exciting phenomenon. David Spooner, author of The Metaphysics of Insects and Other Essays Thinking Is the Best Way to Travel was not just any journey, it was the best kind of vacation, a vacation from myself and the usual ways I see and know myself and the world around me. I am intrigued by life-development transitions and how they facilitate new structures of reasoning and the freedom to find new mutualities of self-other knowing. This book is a wonderful way of making that journey without purposefully intending to do any of this. Dr. William Kent Larkin, author of Growing The Positive Mind and Director of The Applied Neuroscience Institute The best thing about the book is that it is enjoyable to read. It proceeds at a measured pace, without tight, convoluted thinking that one has to fight his way through. I like the cadence; it has a nice pace and rhythm. This is an interesting book that gives one the sense of a life spent in thoughtful reading and reflection. W. K. Maples, mathematician, Marshall Space Flight Center Hyatt Carter has a skillful way of making philosophical concepts easy to comprehend. I find myself taking notes while reading, looking up some of cited authors on the Internet, and ordering their books. Ramón Barayón, author of A Planetary Sojourn and A Death in Zamora

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores contemporary existential science fiction media, including film, television, and video games, and their influence on society’s conceptions of memory, identity, and humanity. Most poignantly, Ryan Lizardi argues, are the ways in which a recent cluster of science fiction media, including Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014), Legion (2017-2019), Westworld (2016-present), Soma (2015), and Death Standing (2019), among others, present a vision of the future that is inextricably tied to an exploration of humanity that is more contemplative and comparative than traditional science fiction. The combination of the existential nature of this current trend in science fiction with the genre’s ability to manifest these abstract concepts in a generic environment that is historically focused on new frontiers and ideas creates a powerful set of media texts that ask audiences to contemplate what it means to exist, think, and connect as human beings. Scholars of media studies, film studies, television studies, genre studies, and philosophy will find this book particularly useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cognitive psychologist and an industrial design engineer draw on their own experiences of cognition in the context of everyday life and work to explore how people attempt to find practical solutions for complex situations. The book approaches these issues by considering higher-order relations between humans and their ecologies such as satisfying, specifying, and affording. This approach is consistent with recent shifts in the worlds of technology and product design from the creation of physical objects to the creation of experiences. Featuring a wealth of bespoke illustrations throughout, A Meaning Processing Approach to Cognition bridges the gap between controlled laboratory experiments and real-world experience, by questioning the metaphysical foundations of cognitive science and suggesting alternative directions to provide better insights for design and engineering. An essential read for all students of Ecological Psychology or Cognitive Systems Design, this book takes the reader on a journey beyond the conventional dichotomy of mind and matter to explore what really matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musings on Light has been written at the end of a journey. This journey involved a mathematical articulation of the power in light summarized in ten books across two Cosmology of Light book series. It is a contemplative, primarily non-mathematical summary of many of the key concepts that are contained in the ten Cosmology of Light books. I intended for these musings to be meditative and to assist the reader to intuitively grasp what is meant by Cosmology of Light. To further assist with the meditation, each of the musings of which there are 50, is accompanied by a carefully designed illustration that will further allow the reader to enter more deeply into the body of Cosmology of Light. Cosmology of Light is intended to be a unified theory of existence from the point of view of light. Hence, it ties together possibility that exists in the native state of light where it is imagined to exist infinitely fast, to the process of multiple quantizations by which light projects itself in layers mirroring symmetrical fourfold realities, to the emergence of space-time-energy-gravity as a cosmic container at the time of the big bang, to the emergence of matter and life in layers of quantum particles, atoms, and cells, to the emergence of humans and culture and civilizations, so that physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, and sociology are all seen as faces of the one body of Light, always behind, immanent in all, and of which all are only richer and richer expressions.

Solomon Shereshevsky, a journalist with an extraordinary memory, was studied by psychiatrist Alexander Luria, leading to a career as a mnemonist. Shereshevsky's synesthesia and memory affected his understanding of abstract concepts and sense of self. Meanwhile, Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, facing a personal crisis, questioned the self and language's ability to connect people. His works explored memory and identity, paralleling Shereshevsky's experiences...
