Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines quantity surcharges and heterogeneity in consumer attention. Quantity surcharges exist for packaged goods when a smaller package size is cheaper than its larger size counterpart per unit. Even though consumers face quantity surcharges in their daily lives, minimal research has been done on this topic. Chapter 1 documents the relevance of quantity surcharges for households who shop at grocery stores. I use rich scanner data in the peanut butter category for this analysis and throughout the other chapters. The data show that quantity surcharges are highly frequent: they exist in 62\% of weeks. Quantity surcharges also exist consistently over time, rather than being a side effect of occasional sales on small size items. Households have heterogeneous purchasing behavior during quantity surcharge periods: some households take advantage of the surcharge and purchase multiple small size jars, but others pay extra and buy large jars ("miss" purchases). I analyze the characteristics of those households who make miss purchases using negative binomial regressions, and find that they have large expenditures per shopping trip and small variety of peanut butter purchases.

Book excerpt: Written by a leading pricing researcher, this book provides a simple unified system for the setting and management of prices. The pricing procedures described are grounded in basic research and are generally applicable over products, situations, and times. The result is that students gain a deeper, more generally useful understanding of this essential aspect of business. The author demystifies the math necessary for making pricing decisions. Using clear, direct language, he explains in detail how to apply expected value, multiple regression, price elasticity, and generalized breakeven analysis to essential pricing tasks. He uses a descriptive approach to explaining mathematical techniques so that formulas can be seen as simply more detailed specifications of intuitive ideas. Used in dozens of college and MBA classes all over the world, Pricing Strategies is now available in a second edition. This revised edition includes updated examples and exercises as well as expanded coverage of topics such as freemium and in-app pricing, subscriptions, tipping, pay-what-you-want pricing, pricing algorithms, and dynamic pricing. Robert M. Schindler is a Professor of Marketing at Rutgers University, USA.

It combines rigorous modeling with sophisticated econometrics and includes telling examples to illustrate general principles. Dennis C. Mueller, University of Vienna, Austria This book provides a uniform and coherent approach to the analysis of distribution systems in general and retail systems in particular. It develops the fundamentals of retail demand and supply, and demonstrates how the provision of distribution services is a principal determinant of economic outcomes in retail exchanges for both retailers and their customers, as well as for other agents such as suppliers and franchisors. The author integrates the existing literature with new applications to provide novel insights into the multi-product nature of retailing, the service aspects of packaging, and the evolution of retail formats such as supermarkets, non-store retailers (including the Internet) and shopping centers. He illustrates how the complementarity that underlies retail activities leads to lower average prices for customers. This integrative process also brings out the role of distribution services as mechanisms to exercise economic power. This is evident not only in channels of distribution but in the evolution of Wal-Mart and the development of franchise contracts. The author also identifies the crucial differences between the retailing of goods and the retailing of services. This impressive volume skilfully integrates conceptual, theoretical and empirical research to analyse critical issues in the economics of retailing and distribution. It will be required reading for academics and professional economists interested in industrial organization, marketing, applied microeconomics and business.

Book excerpt: With a series of experiments, Lena Himbert highlights the influence of the unit price’s unit of measure on the consumer’s price-level perception and quality perception. Furthermore, this thesis shows that the unit price availability and prominence influences the consumer’s store price image. When shopping for pre-packaged products, consumers are offered a variety of product and price information at the point of purchase. The unit price represents price information given to the consumer for which the factor package size is removed and thereby lowers the information load for consumers in the shopping situation. However, retailers have considerable leeway concerning the unit price format. Aspects that can be varied are for example the unit of measure (e.g., price per kg vs price per 100 g) or font size. There is little to no previous research that gives advice to retailers how they should indicate the unit price on the price label.

This engaging book includes fifty puzzles and focuses on three types of paradox. First, everyday observations that appear to belie common sense (such as why some supermarket items sell for more per ounce in larger sizes). Secondly, those paradoxes which have perplexed economists in the past but have since been fairly resolved (such as the diamond–water paradox). Finally, empirical or conceptual anomalies that remain unresolved and present a challenge to today’s economists (such as the voting paradox).
