Book excerpt: Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is a device that separates a flow of gas into two streams simultaneously, one hotter than the inlet and one cooler. Traditionally vortex tubes are mostly operated at high entrance pressures (>10 psig) and always used for cooling operations. There are industrial applications that result in unused pressurized gases. Using vortex tube energy separation may be a method to recover waste pressure energy from high and low pressure sources. In various industrial systems, magnitudes of waste pressure may be lower but may have significant mass flow rates. Hence it is important to make sure that vortex tube provides the required energy separation while harnessing the low pressure but high mass flow rate waste energy and utilizes it for not only cooling but also for heating purposes. Our recent experimental observations show that in the low inlet pressure regime (
Book Synopsis The Ranque Hilsch Vortex Tube Demystified by : André Kaufmann
Download or read book The Ranque Hilsch Vortex Tube Demystified written by André Kaufmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-29 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and working principle of the Ranque Hilsch Vortex Tube. Although vortex tubes have been around for a long time, different explications of their fundamental physics and operation can be found in literature and on the internet. This volume investigates the working principle based on thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. It provides full explication of these parameters in one single work along with results of new investigations not published elsewhere. In addition, the book features a wealth of illustrations on various aspects of the vortex tube that make it easy to read and understand.

Book excerpt: The vortex tube, also known as the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, is a mechanical device that separates a gas into hot and cold streams. It has no moving parts. The gas is injected tangentially into a chamber with high degree of swirl. At the other end because of the nozzle only the outer periphery part is allowed to escape where as the inner part is forced into the inner vortex with a small diameter within the outer vortex. A two dimensional computational model was used to determine the energy separation and flow phenomenon. An axisymmetric model for a counter flow vortex tube was used. The model on simulation explains the temperature separation phenomena within the vortex tube. The fluid in the vortex tube has three regions. One is the fluid entering at a particular temperature and pressure which leads into two outlets, the cold exit and the hot exit where the temperature is less or more from the inlet temperature respectively. The swirl flow results in the temperature drop at the cold exit. The temperature separation occurs because of the heat transfer from the central flow to the peripheral flow. The simulation is done with fluent using the k-e model. FLUENT is software used to simulate fluid flow problems. FLUENT is generally used for computational Fluid Dynamics problems. It uses the finite-volume method to solve the governing equations for a fluid. It provides a wide field to solve problems. Geometry and grid generation is done using GAMBIT.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new explanation of the vortex tube is presented. The proposed model leads to an equivalent unsteady-flow analysis for the development of the flow in the vortex tube. Using this analysis, radial distributions of velocity and temperature can now be calculated at successive axial positions in the tube. The qualitative similarity in the development of the calculated and experimental sets of profiles with axial position is considered especially significant. A theory of vortex tube performance based upon an idealized three-dimensional flow pattern for the vortex tube is derived. Some experiments relating the idealized vortex tube analyzed to previous vortex tube measurements are described. (Author).
