Book excerpt: Repair and rehabilitation methods for civil infrastructure have become a topic of great interest to engineers. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is considered as one of the most popular and practical solutions for strengthening and retrofitting of civil infrastructure. Several past studies indicated that significant increase in strength and stiffness can be achieved by using this technology. The FRP-concrete interface bond is critical in transferring stresses from the concrete surface to the FRP. However, the evaluation of the bond strength is still a challenging issue. To evaluate the bond strength using non-destructive techniques, 32 concrete beams strengthened with FRP using different parameters affecting the bond strength (surface roughness, voids, Epoxy type, Epoxy layers, FRP type, surface preparation, application direction and surface wetness) were tested. The experiment was conducted with the objective of determining the suitable non-destructive method to detect each of the parameters in study, determining the effect of each parameter in study on the bond strength between the concrete and the FRP and finally use finite element models to prepare a set of relationships graphs between each of the parameters in study and the bond strength. The test samples were scanned using ground generating radar (GPR), ultrasound tomography, Infrared camera and Schmidt hammer.

Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repairs on concrete structures have become popular, but their long-term durability remains in question. The objective of this research project is to investigate the efficiency, practicality, and capability of non-destructive testing in assessing the durability of FRP repairs applied on concrete bridges that have been in service for some years. Three bridges were chosen as the best available case studies: (1) the Safe Bridge with sprayed FRP in British Columbia, (2) the St-Étienne-de-Bolton Bridge with four different FRP wrap products in Quebec, and (3) the Leslie Street Bridge with wrap carbon fiber reinforced polymer in Ontario. These structures represent a wide variation in severity of environmental exposure, length of time in service, type of strengthening, and type of FRP product. They also encompass flexural and shear strengthening of beams and strengthening of columns. Two non-destructive evaluation techniques, active infrared thermography and impact-echo, were chosen as the most suitable methods of bond evaluation. The results of these non-destructive techniques were compared with the actual bond strength for accuracy and consistency. To measure the actual integrity of the bond, direct mechanical pull-off tests were performed as a complementary semi-destructive method. Initial indications are that infrared thermography enables investigation of vast areas in a reasonably time-efficient manner and provides reliable qualitative results. Impact-echo is found to be ineffective in evaluating the FRP bond, as the method is incapable of assaying the material close to the impact surface. The direct mechanical pull-off test was found to be relatively accurate in providing quantitative results in environmentally mild testing conditions. Use of the direct mechanical pull-off test, in a small sample, as substantiation of the infrared thermography, significantly increases the reliability of the non-destructive technique. In general, infrared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective maintenance of bridge structures comprises a broad spectrum of plans for repairs and services implemented to enable bridges to perform their intended function. These include in-depth inspection, fatigue analysis, design of mitigation measures and construction to avert component deterioration. Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. The book is aimed at bridge engineers.

Book excerpt: CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) laminates have been used as externally bonded reinforcements for retrofitting and structural strengthening of concrete structures. The adequacy of the CFRP bonding highly depends on the bond integrity between the concrete and CFRP laminates. Considering the reliability of this bonding technique, premature debonding of laminates from the concrete substrate is a major concern. The bond performance may be influenced directly by various parameters; some of the parameters like surface wetness, surface preparation, presence of voids in concrete substrate and overhead versus on the top installation of CFRP laminate have been discussed in this study. During the installation of the composite system, the bond can be comprised due to poor workmanship or unsuitable environmental conditions; improper cure or installation or surface preparation can cause voids, inclusions, debonds and delamination at the CFRP-substrate level. In this study, assessment of the CFRP-concrete bond for beams strengthened in flexure was carried out. Non-Destructive evaluation methods using Ground Penetrating RADAR, Ultrasound Tomography, Thermography and Schmidt hammer were applied to detect possible disbonds between CFRP-Concrete interfaces. Ground Penetration RADAR was effective in finding the sub-surface defects that affect the bond quality, infrared thermography and ultrasound tomography could detect both surface and subsurface delamination. Further, destructive techniques were executed to determine the type of failure in the CFRP retrofitted beams to correlate it with the quality of the bond. This study may serve as a valuable reference for optimization and inspection of CFRP-Concrete bond at the interface, using Non-destructive testing devices for practical applications.

Book excerpt: The use of fiber reinforced polymer materials (composite FRP materials) to strengthen existing concrete structures continues to expand as our current infrastructure ages. However, one of the concerns when using FRP systems in this manner is the difficulty in determining the quality and strength of the bond between the concrete and FRP overlays. There appears to be a need for a reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) method that can directly determine the strength of this bond to ensure the structural performance of FRP-strengthened concrete systems. The goal of this research was to evaluate whether a non-destructive acoustoultrasonic parameters (AUP) evaluation method could be used to determine the shear strength of the bond between FRP systems and concrete substrates. Eighteen concrete beams were externally reinforced flexurally with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) and then non-destructively tested using the AUP procedures. The test beam specimens were then placed in a simply supported configuration and loaded to failure. Interfacial shear strengths obtained from the destructive testing were compared against AUP analysis results to determine if a correlation could be established. Both longitudinal and shear transducers were utilized to collect propagating stress waves; however, only the longitudinal transducer provided consistent correlations to interfacial shear strength values. The investigation concluded that the (AUP) analysis procedure can be used to determine the interfacial shear bond strength of both glass and carbon fiber reinforced concrete beam specimens with relatively good correlation to actual strength data.

Book excerpt: There is an urgent need to develop economic and efficient methods to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete structures. This demand is motivated by several factors including the aging of concrete structures, the desire to upgrade design standards, and the exposure to severe environmental effects. A particular problem confronting engineers in repairing deteriorated structures is the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete elements. Conventionally, steel plates were utilized to restore and enhance the tensile strength of damaged concrete members. Despite the effectiveness of this practice in terms of improving the structural capacity, it is still considered disadvantageous due to the excessive weight of steel and its susceptibility to corrosion in moist environments. The application of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) to existing reinforced concrete structures has gained the interest of many researchers in the last few decades. These materials are superior to steel when it comes to comparing the resistance to electrochemical corrosion, strength-to-weight ratio, ease of handling, fatigue resistance, and availability in any length or shape. However, there is still a serious concern regarding the effect of premature debonding of the FRP plates before reaching the desired strength or ductility. This debonding can initiate from the ends of the plate or can be induced by intermediate cracks in the concrete member. Although the end-plate debonding and peeling mechanisms have been studied extensively, there is still a significant lack of data for FRP-strengthened beams in which intermediate crack-induced debonding is the dominant failure mode. On the other hand, the interfacial bond capacity between the concrete and the FRP composite has not been thoroughly investigated. Whereas, there is still need to study the effect of some of the mechanical and physical parameters on the bond strength of FRP-Concrete interface. Moreover, researchers have also shown a keen interest in simulating flexural cracks in concrete beams, and examine their effect on the debonding mechanisms of FRP materials. However, more realistic approach is needed to model cracks and account for their growth. In this study, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was developed for simulating the flexural behaviour of RC beams externally bonded with FRP systems. The ABAQUS/CAE software version 6.14-2 was used for this purpose. This numerical analysis was performed based on a comprehensive experimental program conducted by Brena et al. (2003). The simulated RC beams were categorized in two groups: Control Beams (without fibre) and CFRP Beams (with carbon fibre reinforced polymer). During the process of constructing the CFRP beam models, two distinct procedures were followed to simulate the interface between the concrete and the externally attached FRP laminates. Perfect bond was assumed in the first approach, and a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) was adopted in the second approach. In the latter, cohesive surface technique was implemented in the ABAQUS model through the use of traction-separation law. Despite the lack of quantitative evaluation in the literature as no similar techniques was attempted by others, the results of this numerical analysis were only compared with experimental findings, and the proposed models were found to be reliable. A parametric study was performed to investigate the influence of various parameters on the flexural capacity of the proposed beam model, and the debonding behaviour of the externally attached FRP laminate. This analysis was conducted by either changing the mechanical properties of some of the constitutive materials (e.g. concrete and reinforcing steel), or altering the geometrical and mechanical properties of the FRP reinforcement. It was then found that the effect of internal steel reinforcement ratio has the most impact on beam ultimate capacity. While changing the FRP bond length beyond a certain value bears no effect on beam strength. Moreover, the numerical model was modified to review the effect of intermediate crack spacings on the overall beam performance. A discrete crack approach was adopted to replicate crack propagation throughout the body of the beam. This technique has shown an approximately 30% improvement in the prediction capacity of this model when compared to a similar specimen in which smeared crack approach is used. The results of this analysis showed that the debonding behaviour of FRP laminates is largely influenced by crack spacing. In addition, the results have also indicated that the initiation of FRP micro-debonding was prolonged as crack spacings were decreased. This response can be attributed to the abrasion effect within the FRP-Concrete interface. Finally, this numerical analysis provides a relatively reliable guidance on the application and the mitigation of externally bonded FRP reinforcement in concrete beams. The predictive capability of the proposed FE models ensures their suitableness for further investigations of FRP effectiveness in civil engineering field.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) sheets can provide incredible structural strength while weighing only a fraction as much as steel. When applied to piles the FRP provides strengthening through both concrete confinement and tensile reinforcement. Mainly used in structural repair, its application is relatively simple in theory. However, many factors(some avoidable, some not) can interfere with the bond between FRP and concrete. When this bond is interrupted the strength of the repair becomes compromised. This thesis examines 2 new methods of improving FRP bond to concrete piles during the time the resin is curing. These methods are compared using 3 types of testing, both nondestructive and otherwise: acoustic analysis, infrared thermography, and pull-off testing. Therefore not only FRP bond improvement techniques are compared but also the techniques for bond evaluation. Findings have shown a definite correlation between non destructive testing and destructive pull-off testing, as well as bond improvement both above and below the waterline when a pressure bag system is used.

Book excerpt: "Externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates are a feasible and economical alternative to traditional methods for strengthening and stiffening deficient reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete girders. The bond between FRP and concrete is the key factor controlling the behavior of concrete structures that are strengthened with FRP composites. Several experiments show that debonding failure happens frequently before FRP rupture, and therefore the FRP strength cannot be fully utilized. For design accuracy, the FRP strength must be reduced due to the debonding failure. This paper analyzes the effect of the strengthening technique on the response and failure modes of RC beams. A non-linear RC beam element model with bond-slip between the concrete and the FRP laminates is used to study the reduction factor of FRP tensile strength of simply supported strengthened RC beams"--Abstract, leaf iii.
