Book excerpt: Religion is a phenomenon that is inseparable from human society. It brings about a set of emotional, ideological and practical elements that are pervasive in the social fabric of any society and characterizable by a number of features. These include the establishment of intermediaries in the relationship between humans and the divine; the construction of ceremonial places for worshipping the gods and practicing ritual performances; and the creation ritual paraphernalia. Investigating the religious dimensions of ancient societies encounters problems in defining such elements, especially with regard to societies that lack textual evidences and has tended to lead towards the identification of differentiation between the mental dimension, related to religious beliefs, and the material one associated with religious practices, resulting in a separation between scholars able to investigate, and possibly reconstruct, ritual practices (i.e., archaeologists), and those interested in defining the realm of ancient beliefs (i.e., philologists and religious historians). The aim of this collection of papers is to attempt to bridge these two dimensions by breaking down existing boundaries in order to form a more comprehensive vision of religion among ancient Near Eastern societies. This approach requires that a higher consideration be given to those elements (either artificial -- buildings, objects, texts, etc. -- or natural -- landscapes, animals, trees, etc.) that are created through a materialization of religious beliefs and practices enacted by members of communities. These issues are addressed in a series of specific case-studies covering a broad chronological framework that from the Pre-pottery Neolithic to the Iron Age. The extant archives offer insight into some of the earliest cities and one of the earliest kingdoms in the historical record. The era of the Third Dynasty of Ur is also probably the best-attested century in antiquity. This imposes a responsibility on the small community of scholars who work on the Neo-Sumerian materials to make this it accessible to a broad, interdisciplinary audience in the humanities and related fields. How can one explain the different appraisal of certain things in different temporal horizons and in different cultures? Cultural processes on how value is attached to things, and how value is re-established, are still little understood. The case studies in this volume, originating from anthropology and archaeology, provide innovative and differentiated answers to these questions. However, for all contributions there are some common basic assumptions. One of these concerns the understanding that it is rarely the value of the material itself that matters for high valuation, but rather the appreciation of the (assumed or constructed) origin of certain objects or their connection with certain social structures. A second of these shared insights addresses the ubiquity of phenomena of 'value in things'. There is no society without valued objects. As a rule, valuation is something negotiated or even disputed. Value arises through social action, whereby it is always necessary to ask anew which actors are interested in the value of certain objects (or in their appreciation). This also works the other way round: Who are those actors who question corresponding objective values and why?

Collocato geograficamente dalle sponde del fiume Isonzo alla displuviale alpina orientale, racchiude il Carso (triestino e goriziano) e la penisola istriana sino a Fiume e al litorale dalmata con i suoi arcipelaghi di isole fino a Cattaro. In esatta sintonia con i numerosi contrasti confinari avvenuti in Europa fra la seconda metà del XIX secolo e la prima del XX, la storia del confine orientale italiano perdura come tentativo emblematico di fissare all’interno di una regione multiforme ed eterogenea per vicende e popoli una frontiera egemonica. Limite mutevole perché sempre fissato su termini ideologici e proprio per questo di perpetua ardua demarcazione. Nel più generale panorama storiografico sulla questione, il volume intende porsi quale strumento accessibile anche a un pubblico non specialistico interessato alle tematiche istriano-dalmate. Dalla pace di Campoformio ai fermenti irredentisti di fine Ottocento, dalle rivendicazioni seguite alla Grande guerra sino alla politica fascista e all’esodo giuliano, il saggio approfondisce lo scenario diplomatico internazionale con le sue implicazioni - prima e dopo - la Seconda guerra mondiale per seguire (grazie a una ricca messe di riferimenti bibliografici italiani e stranieri) l’evolversi delle contese per la definizione confinaria. L’autore considera i molti aspetti endogeni ed esogeni in costante azione nell’area considerata, giungendo all’epoca più recente, dopo la crisi della Jugoslavia, ed esaminando i rapporti con l’Unione europea, la cooperazione interstatale e la politica culturale in atto fra Italia, Slovenia e Croazia.
