Book Synopsis Advances in the Biomechanics of the Hand and Wrist by : F. Schuind

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William P. Cooney III, R. A. Berger, and K. N. An Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory Department of Orthopedic Surgery Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation Rochester, MN 55905, U. S. A. As surgeons struggle to find new insights into the complex diseases and deformities that involve the wrist and hand, new insights are being provided by applied anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to these important areas. Indeed, a fresh new interaction of disciplines has immersed in which anatomists, bioengineers and surgeons examine together basic functions and principles that can provide a strong foundation for future growth. Clinical interest in the hand and wrist are now at a peak on an international level. Economic implications of disability affecting the hand and wrist are recognized that have international scope crossing oceans, cultures, languages and political philosophies. As with any struggle, a common ground for understanding is essential. NATO conferences such as this symposium on Biomechanics of the Hand and Wrist provides such a basis upon which to build discernment of fundamental postulates. As a start, basic research directed at studies of anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology and mechanical modeling is essential. To take these important steps further forward, funding from government and industry are needed to consider fundamental principles within the material sciences, biomechanical disciplines, applied anatomy and physiology and concepts of engineering modeling that have been applied to other areas of the musculoskeletal system.
Book Synopsis Wilhelm Wundt in History by : Robert W. Rieber
Download or read book Wilhelm Wundt in History written by Robert W. Rieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new millenium it may be fair to ask, "Why look at Wundt?" Over the years, many authors have taken fairly detailed looks at the work and accomplishments of Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920). This was especially true of the years around 1979, the centennial of the Leipzig Institute for Experimental Psychology, the birthplace of the "graduate program" in psychology. More than twenty years have passed since then, and in the intervening time those centennial studies have attracted the attention and have motivated the efforts of a variety of historians, philosophers, psychologists, and other social scientists. They have profited from the questions raised earlier about theoretical, methodological, sociological, and even political aspects affecting the organized study of mind and behavior; they have also proposed some new directions for research in the history of the behavioral and social sciences. With the advantage of the historiographic perspective that twenty years can bring, this volume will consider this much-heralded "founding father of psychology" once again. Some of the authors are veterans of the centennial who contributed to a very useful volume, edited by Robert W. Rieber, Wilhelm Wundt and the Making of a Scientific Psychology (New York: Plenum Press, 1980). Others are scholars who have joined Wundt studies since then, and have used that book, among others, as a guide to further work. The first chapter, "Wundt before Leipzig," is essentially unchanged from the 1980 volume.
Book Synopsis Biomechanics of the Hand by : E. Y. Chao
Download or read book Biomechanics of the Hand written by E. Y. Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1989 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected works on the biomechanics of the hand accumulated in the Biomechanics Laboratory of Mayo Clinic over the past eleven years. It attempts to apply a composite approach to normal and pathological functions of the hand by utilizing mechanical modeling, anatomical testing and clinical verification. A collaborative effort of the disciplines of orthopedics and engineering science has been put forward in this research. Attention is focused on the understanding of the function of the hand in relation to force and motion potentials observed in normal and pathological cases.

Book Synopsis A Manual of Zoology by : Richard Hertwig
Download or read book A Manual of Zoology written by Richard Hertwig and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Zoology The favor with which the first and second American editions of Hertwig's Zoology have been received has led to a thorough revision of the whole with a close comparison with the latest German edition. In this there have been introduced many new features bringing the work up to date. These include a discussion of Mendelian inheritance, many modifications in the account of the theory of evolution, and a considerable enlargement of the Protozoa and especially of the pathogenic forms, making the volume of more value to the student of medicine. To have included these without changes elsewhere would have resulted in a much larger volume. But the demand in American colleges has been for a smaller work and so a reduction has been made in two ways. There has been a condensation by the elimination of unnecessary words and phrases and by the omission of considerable matter of minor importance. Then there has been the recognition of the fact that the book has two uses, one in the class room the other as a reference work. The two classes of matter have been distinguished by difference of type. No attempt has been made to bring the systematic names into accord with the latest vagaries of the systematists. No useful and could be served by changing or transferring the well-known names of Echidna, Coluber, Amia, Homarus, Unio, Holothuria, Am ba, etc., while the confusion this would introduce would be enormous. It should be understood that while the revision is based upon the German edition of Professor Hertwig, he should not be held responsible for any changes introduced. The whole responsibility for these rests upon the American reviser.
