Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the third edition of a work cycle that started in 2006 for my PhD thesis. The thesis was presented in 2010 (first edition, Gattiglia 2010), partially published as a summary monograph in 2011 (second edition, Gattiglia 2011) or in articles (Gattiglia 2012, Gattiglia 2012a, Gattiglia 2011a), and now (third edition) takes the form of a more comprehensive publication in the light of new data. Over the past two years, the work study on Pisa, not only relating to the Middle Ages, continued within the MAPPA (Metodologie Applicate alla Predittività del Potenziale – Methodologies Applied to Archaeological Potential Predictivity) project, allowing a widespread collection of data thanks to which it was possible to explain more fully the hydro-geological, geomorphological and topographic context and to check (and in many cases change) part of the assumptions made.

Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to Gianfranco Capriz on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. This book collects about twenty research papers written by world-leading scientists in the field of continuum thermomechanics. The authors discuss a number of different theories, classical and new. Moreover, general underlying themes are both the exploration of the limits of the continuum approach (as it was consolidated between the late '50s and the early '70s) and the study of those amendments and extensions that would hopefully allow to treat mathematically a host of real-life problems that have been proposed, but not yet adequately modelled, within materials science, structural optimisation, biosciences, medical engineering, superconductivity, etc. The reader will find displayed the recent progresses in modelling non-standard material structures.

Book excerpt: XIV The stability of a philosophical construction will depend not only upon the solidity of the blocks, of the pillars and architraves that make it up, but also upon the way in which all these parts are connected. Of course, it will not be possible to argue for every single part of a philosophical building: to do so would mean to embark in a virtually endless enterprise. Accordingly, some of the parts of a philosophical building will have to be taken from the literature on the subject as 'ready made' or 'semi-finished' elements, while others will be argued for in the course of building. This is what happened in my work too. In some cases (for in stance, in the case of epistemic relativism), my concern was to illustrate theses which I believed to be sufficiently consolidated, rather than to ar gue for them. In other cases - where I was directly engaged in building the theory that I want to fonnulate - I did exactly the opposite. This is what I have tried to achieve, for example, for those proper architraves of my construction, viz. the connection between scepticism and metaphysi cal realism. and the thesis of the nonnative value of the fundamental epistemological notions (truth, objectivity, and rationality).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kucers’ The Use of Antibiotics is the definitive, internationally-authored reference, providing everything that the infectious diseases specialist and prescriber needs to know about antimicrobials in this vast and rapidly developing field. The much-expanded Seventh Edition comprises 4800 pages in 3 volumes in order to cover all new and existing therapies, and emerging drugs not yet fully licensed. Concentrating on the treatment of infectious diseases, the content is divided into four sections - antibiotics, anti-fungal drugs, anti-parasitic drugs, and anti-viral drugs - and is highly structured for ease of reference. Each chapter is organized in a consistent format, covering susceptibility, formulations and dosing (adult and pediatric), pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, toxicity, and drug distribution, with detailed discussion regarding clinical uses - a feature unique to this title. Compiled by an expanded team of internationally renowned and respected editors, with expert contributors representing Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, the US, and Canada, the Seventh Edition adopts a truly global approach. It remains invaluable for anyone using antimicrobial agents in their clinical practice and provides, in a systematic and concise manner, all the information required when prescribing an antimicrobial to treat infection.

Stampacchia, had prepared some lecture notes on ordinary differential equations for a course in ad analysis. These remained for a long time unused because he was no vanced longer very interested in the study of such equations. We now see, though, that numerous applications to biology, chemistry, economics, and medicine have recently been added to the traditional ones in mechanics; also, there has been in these last years a reemergence of interest in nonlinear analy sis, of which the theory of ordinary differential euqations is one of the principal sources of methods and problems. Hence the idea to write a book. Our text, based on the old notes and experience gained in many courses, seminars, and conferences, both in Italy and abroad, aims to give a simple and rapid introduction to the various themes, problems, and methods of the theory of ordinary differential equations. The book has been conceived in such a way so that even the reader who has merely had a first course in calculus may be able to study it and to obtain a panoramic vision of the theory. We have tried to avoid abstract formalism, preferring instead a discursive style, which should make the book accessible to engineers and physicists without specific preparation in modern mathematics. For students of mathematics, it pro vides motivation for the subject of more advanced analysis courses.

This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a modern and up-to-date treatment of the Hilberttransform of distributions and the space of periodic distributions.Taking a simple and effective approach to a complex subject, thisvolume is a first-rate textbook at the graduate level as well as anextremely useful reference for mathematicians, applied scientists, and engineers. The author, a leading authority in the field, shares with thereader many new results from his exhaustive research on the Hilberttransform of Schwartz distributions. He describes in detail how touse the Hilbert transform to solve theoretical and physicalproblems in a wide range of disciplines; these include aerofoilproblems, dispersion relations, high-energy physics, potentialtheory problems, and others. Innovative at every step, J. N. Pandey provides a new definitionfor the Hilbert transform of periodic functions, which isespecially useful for those working in the area of signalprocessing for computational purposes. This definition could alsoform the basis for a unified theory of the Hilbert transform ofperiodic, as well as nonperiodic, functions. The Hilbert transform and the approximate Hilbert transform ofperiodic functions are worked out in detail for the first time inbook form and can be used to solve Laplace's equation with periodicboundary conditions. Among the many theoretical results proved inthis book is a Paley-Wiener type theorem giving thecharacterization of functions and generalized functions whoseFourier transforms are supported in certain orthants of Rn. Placing a strong emphasis on easy application of theory andtechniques, the book generalizes the Hilbert problem in higherdimensions and solves it in function spaces as well as ingeneralized function spaces. It simplifies the one-dimensionaltransform of distributions; provides solutions to thedistributional Hilbert problems and singular integral equations;and covers the intrinsic definition of the testing function spacesand its topology. The book includes exercises and review material for all majortopics, and incorporates classical and distributional problems intothe main text. Thorough and accessible, it explores new ways to usethis important integral transform, and reinforces its value in bothmathematical research and applied science. The Hilbert transform made accessible with many new formulas anddefinitions Written by today's foremost expert on the Hilbert transform ofgeneralized functions, this combined text and reference covers theHilbert transform of distributions and the space of periodicdistributions. The author provides a consistently accessibletreatment of this advanced-level subject and teaches techniquesthat can be easily applied to theoretical and physical problemsencountered by mathematicians, applied scientists, and graduatestudents in mathematics and engineering. Introducing many new inversion formulas that have been developedand applied by the author and his research associates, the book: * Provides solutions to the distributional Hilbert problem andsingular integral equations * Focuses on the Hilbert transform of Schwartz distributions, giving intrinsic definitions of the space H(D) and its topology * Covers the Paley-Wiener theorem and provides many importanttheoretical results of importance to research mathematicians * Provides the characterization of functions and generalizedfunctions whose Fourier transforms are supported in certainorthants of Rn * Offers a new definition of the Hilbert transform of the periodicfunction that can be used for computational purposes in signalprocessing * Develops the theory of the Hilbert transform of periodicdistributions and the approximate Hilbert transform of periodicdistributions * Provides exercises at the end of each chapter--useful toprofessors in planning assignments, tests, and problems

Book excerpt: What art is--its very nature--is the subject of this book by one of the most distinguished continental theorists writing today. Informed by the aesthetics of Nelson Goodman and referring to a wide range of cultures, contexts, and media, The Work of Art seeks to discover, explain, and define how art exists and how it works. To this end, Gérard Genette explores the distinction between a work of art's immanence--its physical presence--and transcendence--the experience it induces. That experience may go far beyond the object itself.Genette situates art within the broad realm of human practices, extending from the fine arts of music, painting, sculpture, and literature to humbler but no less fertile fields such as haute couture and the culinary arts. His discussion touches on a rich array of examples and is bolstered by an extensive knowledge of the technology involved in producing and disseminating a work of art, regardless of whether that dissemination is by performance, reproduction, printing, or recording. Moving beyond examples, Genette proposes schemata for thinking about the different manifestations of a work of art. He also addresses the question of the artwork's duration and mutability.

Book excerpt: This book delineates the various types of factorization problems for matrix and operator functions. The problems originate from, or are motivated by, the theory of non-selfadjoint operators, the theory of matrix polynomials, mathematical systems and control theory, the theory of Riccati equations, inversion of convolution operators, and the theory of job scheduling in operations research. The book presents a geometric principle of factorization which has its origins in the state space theory of linear input-output systems and in the theory of characteristic operator functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Sinc Numerical Methods presents an ideal road map for handling general numeric problems. Reflecting the authors advances with Sinc since 1995, the text most notably provides a detailed exposition of the Sinc separation of variables method for numerically solving the full range of partial differential equations (PDEs) of interest to scientists and engineers. This new theory, which combines Sinc convolution with the boundary integral equation (IE) approach, makes for exponentially faster convergence to solutions of differential equations. The basis for the approach is the Sinc method of approximating almost every type of operation stemming from calculus via easily computed matrices of very low dimension. The CD-ROM of this handbook contains roughly 450 MATLAB programs corresponding to exponentially convergent numerical algorithms for solving nearly every computational problem of science and engineering. While the book makes Sinc methods accessible to users wanting to bypass the complete theory, it also offers sufficient theoretical details for readers who do want a full working understanding of this exciting area of numerical analysis.
